What was on GEN-pool für Creatures? | |

While watching old Lazy Game Reviews videos, I came across one with an offhand mention of an unauthorized disc containing free third-party Creatures content that was sold in retail stores without the permission of the authors. Some looking into the company that made That's Life! shows the name of the CD was GEN-pool für Creatures, but although it has a wiki page, the page is only two sentences long and has an incorrect title on top of that.
Does anyone have more information about what was on this disc, or even own a copy? I'm primarily interested in knowing if it contained anything that has since been lost to time, given how early it came out in Creatures history (1997). It doesn't seem to be available for purchase anywhere, unfortunately, otherwise I'd just check it out myself and keep it around as an oddity. |

Okay, I tried a random google search for the exact title and ended up on Amazon.
It says that it contains creatures in various life stages from other "parents". And yes, the "parents" are put into quotation marks like that. Among the creatures it lists hybrids like GreNorns as well.
In addition it says that it offers tools to modify the looks of your creatures, or to "genetically" modify food (again, quotation marks around "genetically" ).
Lastly, it claims to have new objects such as an anti-baby-pill and the ultimate medicine.
The original game Creatures is required to use it. System requirements are identical to those of the original game.
EDIT: I also found this slightly dodgy offer which may or may not be our disk in question for a little under 7 bucks.

I honestly had no idea that even existed. |

I own a copy but i don't know where it is now. Somewhere on the attic i think.
It contained COE(Creatures Object Editor) a program for editing and creating C1 COBs i think it was made by Alexander Leammle.
It contained a Sprite Editor.
The Genpool CD was filled with C1 Norns, some with interesting Mutation, special colors that where very rare.
The Genpool also contained some COBs.
Me and my friend loved it very much, because we had no Internet connection and with this CD we had so many things, which where only available online.
We edited spirtes of existing things in the world, added chemicals to existing food cobs to make them more nutritious. |

@Papriko, great find! I might try to buy it if Liil can't find their copy.
@Liil, could you try looking for the disc? I'd really like to see what COBs were on it. There doesn't seem to be nearly as much missing stuff for C1 as there is for C2 (or maybe just a lack of documentation makes it seem that way), but GEN-pool could potentially contain things not otherwise available anymore. COE and various sprite editors are still floating around. |

Okay, i will try to find it.
Give me a week or two.
I'm owning a large storage of creatures related stuff of the last 18 Years, C1, C2 + C3DS on my hard disk and external storage. I update them every few months, if new stuff is available. Most is DS related but i think an ISO of the Genpool would be nice as an addition for the C1 stuff.
I could share the Genpool ISO if I find the CD on the attic, but I don't know if this is legal? |

It's sort of a grey area, but seeing as the CD itself isn't entirely legit, maybe it wouldn't be an issue? |

Oh! I've messed with that before. I was wondering why it was asking to be registered despite being indie software. I guess that might explain why? |

Awesome, Liil! And it looks like I don't have some of those. Would you be willing to put all of the GEN-pool stuff in a zip and upload it to Dropbox or a similar hosting site? This is a really interesting piece of Creatures history to have. You could also give it to Lacota and have her put it on Eem Foo's Archive. |

Okay I will try it tomorrow.
I created 3 ISOs: Genpool, Sea Monkeys and my Creatures1 Backup with COBs. I'm not familiar with hosting files, which sites are the best free ones?
How to contact Lakota?
I can make ZIP files for Genpool Stuff, but I don't know if the COBs in my C1 Backup need the sprites, I don't know the names of the sprites who match to the COBs. I think it is better to upload whole C1 Game Backup and someone can try to find the sprites matching. |

Dropbox is a good free hosting site and Lacota can be reached on Creatures Caves. Zipping up your whole Creatures 1 game installation is a good idea, yeah. |

I thought I heard LGR talking about that. I thought it was something that was fabled to exist. Now I know. I can blame him for more obscure shovelware exiting obscurity!
Thing is, I've never saw it on store shelves where I live, and I wonder..was it only sold in Germany? |

Surprised that LGR hasnt done a video on Creatures, tbh.
there is some sort of double-edged sword about these third-party DLC packs in that, while they stole people's work and sold it for money, they provided downloads for people without internet access and they may also count as preservation if their content isn't available elsewhere anymore
And why are all the COBs just Beowulf's stuff? |

Please download soon if you need the files everybody, I will shut down the download links on monday, because of the “Grey Area” thing. |

I've gone ahead and rehosted these:

The Sea Monkeys one is too big and neocities gets grumpy, though. |

Thank you! I've downloaded them. As for Sea Monkeys, maybe you could try Dropbox instead? I can't find any other way to get Sea Monkeys (PC), so I need it as well, even if the link is only temporary.
