| How do you think of names? | |

I want to know how you in the CC think of names for your creatures, I've never been inventive with names so I (sadly) use the Autonamer. (or Supernamer if I am raising Ettins)
I would like to name them myself, but I just can't really think of any names.

I do a bit of roleplaying (if that is the right word) for Creatures. My world is named Hokum, and the mayor is Hokum Pete. If the mayor and his/her spouse has a female heir, then she will be named Hokum Pia. So all the members of the royal family are named either Hokum Pete or Hokum Pia. As for the citizens of Hokum, they are generally named after their parents. |

I usually think about people I know, people from stories I've read, movies I've seen, Biblical names, etc. |

Often a child must earn its name by performing a noteworthy deed, and then being named after it. |

Sometimes I name them after soapie characters... to much the same effect as watching the soaps XD (Charlene slapped Scott after he cheated on her with Madge? The horror.... XD )

Autonamer.
But I thought about making some kind of mix with a random generator, names I know by myself and names the community suggests to make a new catalogue for it, but I am too lazy right now. Maybe someone else does if I just mention it often enough...

I used to have a nice system where I'd take the word in the creature's moniker and add another word to it. So a Norn whose moniker has the word "fish" might become "fishskin", and so on.

I think that's a really clever way of naming your Norns! The fact that you use their moniker makes their namesake even more unique to them.
I tend to name my Norns after my favourite characters in literature - not quite as original. My last Norn was called Dumbledore... |

Oh, but you end up with such strange occurrences.
"Gandalf just slapped Arwen to death!"
"Palpatine just kisspopped Leiah!"

ARWEN NO!!!
I do like your idea of naming them based on their moniker, I think I'll give that a go.

I tend to name my Norns after my favourite characters
I used to do this a lot (*somewhere from my hard drive PF is grumbling*), but I stopped because I either started projecting the characters' personalities onto the creatures or I just had really weird luck in how my little namesakes acted, and it got to a point where I was starting to get weirded out by it.
Now I pretty much rely on 1) the autonamer, or 2) whatever random assortment of semi-sensical letters pops into my head at a given moment.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

I also name mine after characters. Often after writers or musicians too. This is mostly because norns saying "Jean Paul Sartre eat Marilyn Manson" or "Maybe push toy, Pyramidhead" is just priceless.

I usually piece together letters to form names that sound nice to me... The problem is that I usually end up with very similar names after a time! I like having name themes, and I just put together a list of 415 male names, 300 female names, and 80 Grendel names. Took a good deal of time, but I'm all set for a decent amount of time! The name list is somewhat in line with Creatures... With my next update on Discover Albia with Norn and Grendel introductions, that theme will be revealed!
I've found that Names by Chinaroad is a great resource for name suggestions. There are many categories, as well as links to sites that can provide more information and lists. Good luck!

I found a good link over at Helen's Bibble Directory with a huge amount of names.

Wow, that is quite the name list! I'll definitely utilize it when I need another theme next time around. Thanks for the link! I'm sure it will be very helpful to anyone seeking an extensive list of names. Plus, the web site has a lot of interesting features. I had a blast looking through the list of C1 downloadable Norns with their descriptions and pictures. That's one thing I'm hoping for: A few obvious color/pigment mutations!

No matter how many times I try I can never seem to get high enough generations to cause obvious pigment mutations.

Mutations are random, so the generation number doesn't need to be high specifically, you just need to go through a lot of Norns before you'll usually see something interesting. I've had random pigments at generation 3 before.

I once thought I had come up with an ingenious way to name my norns when I decided to combine the momma and pappa's names together to create the childs name. For example Sandy and Tom would be either Tandy or Som (obvious modifications made for the correct gender of norn). I encountered problems with this though when I realized the same two norns were having multiple children.. then they were all ending up with the same names... |

And of course there is the small paradox of how you named the first two norns. |

I tried using that strategy once, Kittie! I think I ran into the same problem as you, mainly because I ran out of name variations to come up with. One or two names for each gender are usually pretty easy to come up with, but then the combinations start sounding crazy and wacky! Not to mention the fact that I'm far too picky when it comes to how names sound, so I automatically eliminated a bunch of semi-decent names. Although in the example you gave, I can come up with a good number of names I like. I'd say that it's a pretty good strategy to naming!
