I?ve just got back into playing Creatures 1 today ? hatched two Norns, Albus and Arriana, (woo, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows...) and then I got bored pretty quickly after that. I?m open to suggestions really: How can I make my game play more interesting? I know I can inject an array of different COBs and breeds, but I?m talking more about strategies, experiments and such. I did do a little Wolfling Run earlier, with two different, un-named Norns, but I didn?t let it go on for very long, since the outcome would?ve been so predictable ? they would?ve have bred like rabbits and/or died.
I remember when I first started playing the Creatures series; it would keep me entertained for hours. However, I think because I?ve played Creatures for such a long time, (and I?m talking years here) I?ve become less and less... enthralled and interested by it ? hence the 2 years break. I really want to give it another go though, so... How do you play your Creatures game? How do you keep yourselves occupied with it for so long? |

i'm in the same boat, practically. i do enjoy wolfling runs, and a lot of times i'll just leave creatures on over night. other than that, i splice them, i teach them to fight each other a la the creatures match, i fiddle with their genetics, i breed grendels, whatever. i don't know, i'm really into the genetics side of the game.
edit: i thought of something else, too. i used to stage social experiments. hehe. it works well in c3, with the terrariums- i'd fill say the norn meso up with food plants and stick some norns in there, then stick some norns in the grendel home with one vendor, then put maybe some in the ettin desert, and see which ended up more successful, and interbreed them eventually. actually i once ended up with some super resilient norns in the grendel home- they'd survive off detritus and were immune to viruses, but regular food did nothing for them. sort of like a naturally occurring toxic norn?

Here's what I do, when I'm in the "I must find a way to make this more interesting" mood (other than getting new COBs and Norns, of course. ):
Firstly, get a new world for your Norn's to play in! This always increases interest as you explore it. Might I suggest Darwina or Terra Nornia.
Nextly, get some Breedable Grendels. These will bring challenge to your Norns as they live and grow in a land not their own.
What I would suggest, though, is to export all four of those Norns and re-import them into one of these worlds. Hatch 4 more eggs and let them begin their journey. Trying to raise eight Norns at once is such a challenge that it'll keep you sucked into the game... literally. With a whole new world and some Grendels that can literally wreak havok in groups can make raising some Norns even more challenging.
When they're old enough, leave them on their own for a while... you may be surprised what might happen. Also, try downloading some high-gen Norns from various websites and let them roam with the 1st generation ones. That'll be interesting...
If I say any more, this whole thread will be part of this one post. My way of keeping Creatures entertaining is much more complicated than that. I sometimes make my Norns scavenge for food, other than laying around vendors left and right. Anyway, I'll stop talking now. XP

I luff Wolflings. In fact, I'm setting one up right now. I love to see what mixies I can end up with.
I'm mostly a 'have several tribes of creatures that live in diferent areas that fight to survive and stuff' person. I even make up 'prophecies' and stuff, like sacrificing a certain norn to please Au the desert god and stuff. Like, whenever Twilightcat's corpse candles go off, it's the 'spirits of dead norns' attemping to send a message, and I make up what they're trying to say. I love that agent.

First, I recommend you head over to Fig's Tree and get some of the COBs there, they are downright awesome. The coconut crab is not only fun to watch, you can edit creature genetics so they eat them out of instinct (e.g Crabeater Grendels).
Try raising creatures other than norns. For me, very few of my worlds have norns in them-it's either grendels or shee. Especially grendels-Crabeaters are fun.
The Worlds Hawksight recommonded are both good choices, and I also love the Albian Museum of Natural History-there's a load of interesting stuff in there.

Yeah, when I'm not doing the above, it's grendels, grendels, and more grendels.

I play DS with C3, i usually make two norn families, one in the Meso and other in Norn Terrarium and let them breed some generations, then i get the offspring to breed and make another two families and so on. Maybe im boring but i disable Grendels from hatching and i even lock up the Meso and Terra doors so everything is in my complete control
Its also interesting to examine the later generations genes and see mutations occurred. |

i don't.
hehe but when i did, i used to inject all the COBs i could get my hands on. Especially the thing where they can keep breeding regardless of egg count, and being able to keep 24 creatures in the game - from CreaturesJungle i believe. Or something like that, i don't remember the details, i haven't played in years.
and i'd leave the game on while at school to see what came out. I'd be a control freak for a while and then go back to school. actually i did that with C2 as well, iirc.
DS i hardly ever cared for. can't stand the game. Never got C3.
Yes, I'm the forum ... Any questions?

Personally, the only aspect I've found that interesting for some time is developing for the games. Probably not much help to you, but you did ask how we 'play'. =P
I find it like a never-ending puzzle.

I don't play Creatures much now, preferring to draw the norns and play PS2, but I used to do odd things with my norns.
When I was about ten, I used to pretend to be a 'norn photographer' while playing C3, so I'd pose my norns, mess around with that agent by Clucky that changes agent physics and then take a photo.
Once I ended up with a photo of a norn dancing on top of that plinth in the Crypt with an ice cream in his hand X3 |

I think I got the most fun out of C2 when I started learning to make cobs - testing my latest (crappy) creation and if I felt they worked well enough, getting friends to test them so I could release them.

Well, I got a lot of fun out of just paying attention to the different norns and their personalities. I didn't do that much in C2 or C3/DS. But C1 was definatly an observation game for me.
Of course, if only the norns would eat more often......
You might even find that you will get attached to certain norns. I got attached to the pre export Nancy, a Forest norn. I was actually sad when she died, but happy that I had a copy export folder of her.
Oh boy. I'm veering off topic. I just think that observation is a good thing.

Darwinia looks AWESOME! Someone should convert it to DS. The problem would be looping, but I don't see why looping couldn't be made a standard code you can just copy (and change where needed)

Sometimes I open the genetics kit and color a few Norns . That's one of my favorite things to do on Creatures... A bit of a pain to set up though. I also just usually inject some of my favorite meta rooms, and a few of my favorite breeds, teach them words, and put them in the proper meta rooms (If it's Aqua Norns, I put them in Aquatilis or Aquatopia). |

I tend to be a bit of a COB-aholic, myself, *plugs Muppetboy's Geatville* but I still enjoy trying to lead a norn through the world, discovering its many joys and perils, and finding that special someone. Alternately, when I've got twelve norns all together, I focus on the poor grendel.

It's interesting to read about how other people play. If you haven't already, then please share how you play, I'd love to read your posts!
Hehe Malkin, are you one of those who downloads every COB possible? I'm getting close to achieving a lifetime membership with 'COB-aholics Anonymous' after seeing all the goodies on Geatville - everything on offer looks so tempting and fun! That's my goal for today, to stop my new C1 game from seeming so dull.
How do you focus on the poor Grendel, out of interest? |

Well, I talk to him - I teach him his language, like I might a norn, I ask him what he's doing and advise him.
I monitor him, I install Grendel Friendly and other Grendel friendly cobs such as the punching bag (to reduce anger) and extra food sources (so he doesn't have to steal all the norns' food.) I know The Truth About Grendels!

Hardly at all now, since the CFE version of my favorite breed seems to have behavior problems. But breeding Grendels is still way funner than breeding Norns.

Laura's comment about downloading every COB available reminded me of something I did the first year I played the game that actually made it more fun for me.
I was still a kid when I first played Creatures, and my father had control of the computer, so at first he wouldn't allow me to download anything for the game unless it was from the official site. He was insanely paranoid about 3rd party content and treated everything like a ticking time trojan.
As the first year passed he became a little more lenient and finally said I could start downloading 3rd party content, but only a limited amount (I still have no idea why he set the "limit;" it's not like most of the COBs back then would make a dent in the available hard drive space). So, I'd print out the COB lists from various web sites and I'd treat them like a catalogue, and I'd strategize what I was going to download and inject.
It was a somewhat tedious process, but I bring that up because when I was finally granted permission to download whatever the heck I wanted I went wild and... the game got really boring really fast. Luckily C2 came out shortly thereafter and rekindled my love for the series, but it was an interesting phenomenon to me.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

*nods* I've had the same happen with Sims 1, in fact that's why a lot of Sims players I know choose to keep a "vanilla" version of the game with no custom content. It's like it's almost more interesting if you're limited.

I think this is true for me, but in reverse! I spent something like half an hour downloading a broad mixture of COBs, injected two, but now I'm bored already! I think I found choosing which COBs I wanted more fun than the gameplay itself. Dire. |

I think it's the whole breeding thing especially, that keeps me entertained for hours. I've always had a thing for breeding though..I've had a fishtank in the past and enjoyed breeding guppies and selling them.
The thing with Creatures is, because to me it's not a game..it's a simulator, it has no clear beginning and no clear end and loses it's goal after a while. The trick is to great one for yourself. I did so by registering here, to put my best Norns up for adoption, not just to show what I own and how I do it, but also to prefend overpopulation..so I can keep on breeding, and watch them develop.
One thing I mentioned in another topic, for example, I love the seasonal cycle in C2. Each fruit has it's own season to fall off trees and ready for harvest, I feed my norns and they become superhealthy for reproduction. A hungry norn will not think about mating.
To keep this way of playing in an infinite loop, it keeps me entertained for hours! But once again, that is my way.. |

I decorate my world for 5-6 hours putting all food sources, adjusting temperature, organic and inorganic nutrients, I put many critters, that are characters in popular cartoons and then I hatch Norns I teach them a lot of things. As soon as they hatch I teach them words using Encylopaedia Nornica (in C2), soon after that I teach them how to eat food, fruit and roots, then I take them somewhere, teach them to push dispenser when they're hungry, to 'eat' drink when they're thirsty, to push buttons and lift, to interact with critters and to play with tons of toys I put in the game. Most of my Norns are fast at learning so I rarely have problems. After around 20 mins of teaching Norns I continue raising them till adolescence when they mate. When they have kids I export parents till I teach their kids how to survive
I'm a hardcore christian first, and a creature breeder second.

I play C3/DS for R&D purposes. I solve practical problems, the kind makes Norn care a pain.
Here's what I usually do to start breeding. After hatching six engineered Norns, I use Danikat's IQ Test to evaluate which two Norns of opposite gender qualify for their ultimate task of reproduction. This, in effect eases the hassle of constantly teaching them right from wrong, because I want them to understand the world on their own. After three eggs are laid, the parents get exported, and the babies get hatched, depending on their genders, I will engineer three more eggs to equalize the demographics. And the cycle continues, from then on.
After raising many successful generations to the point of adulthood (the sweet spot is 5), it's time for a little family reunion.
As for the Norns that weren't so lucky during the hurdles, they get trashed. But, that how the future works, by continuing to move forward. The circle of life must go on.
Creatures, and Civilization? I'll pay good money to have Norns form Nations and Cultures! |

I develop for creatures way, way more than I actually play it.
But when I do play it, I try to make it relatively difficult. Hatching norns without instincts, littering the world with dangers, etc. I find the more work I have to put into caring for my creatures, the more attached I get to them, and the more enjoyable the whole game experience is for me.
Sometimes I'll just do weird things to make the world interesting though, like have all female norns and have a script randomly inseminate one if the population drops below a certain number, or try to raise a grendel to get along with my norn population, or so on. Really I don't have a single playstyle. But that's what I love about the game; you can pretty much do anything you want.

Ive recently developed a new way that i do things...
So first i inject all kinds of potted plants and metarooms, usually daedolus, ng1, terra reborn, and sometimes aquatilis.
I then put in each metaroom a male and female norn of the same breed.
So, for example, chichis in meso, treehuggers in ng, bananas in terra, magmas in daedolus, and if aquatilis is on i put ocean bondis a nd aquanorns.
So then I put a random teleporter in the comms room.
And a psycho grendel in the capitalia's atrium, with all the doors locked to grendels.
Put some botanoids for Mr. Killer
And then I just sit back and switch between the different communities, helping them thru childhood, etc.
Then I put it on doublespeed and leave for a while, then come back for a while and repeat.
in the spring you gotta let the flowers fully blossom

1. Install Agents
2. Install a few breeds I like
3. Hatch norns
4. ?
I kinda get lost after step 3, unfortunately. Not sure where to go after everything is set up most of the time. I wish I knew what to do other than watch whatever initial pair of norns bounce around...
Maybe I should try to set a goal next time I play. |

I like to run experiments. I do it like a real-life experiment - I have access to a statistics program at university, so I plug my data into that once I'm done to draw my conclusions.
An experiment I had was to test if placing one breed in the top level of the Norn Meso and the other breed in the bottom would have any impact on their interbreeding rate. It doesn't - they still interbreed essentially randomly, assuming the two breeds both have fairly standard genomes (I ran it with all combinations of ChiChis, Bengals and Siamese).
Currently I'm doing a very long wolfing run with three separate genomes (I edited them enough to make the two modified genomes be grendels and ettins, so they won't interbreed). My genomes are normal ChiChis, creatures with the immortality-prevetion only part of the CFE genome, and my own immortaly-preventing genome. I'm looking to see which genome produces a fast-ager first.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |
