The point of this topic is simple. In this topic, you simply share what you learned that day! Past learning experiences are welcome as well.

It seemed like a fitting topic to choose since we're all learning new things every day.

I'll go ahead and start.

Today I learned two things. 1) I'm not bad at drawing on paper. I used to be better but this is the first time I've put pen and pencil to paper in years. 2) I learned that Crobsters can kind of swim.

This is a great topic idea! :)

Today I learned that vinegar is 5-18% acetic acid with the rest being water. I also realized acetic acid is used in photograph development chemicals (stop bath).

Oh my! I hope that isn't from personal experience. D:

Today I learned that hyrdocortisone, in any form, is pretty safe to use on human skin. I found some anti-itch cat spray from when I mistakenly picked it up instead of dog spray and it works alright on my heat rash.

Today I learned that my cat is secretly a cheetah cub. (She hides whenever I'm gone and only comes out when I come back, complete with cheetah chirps.) (Did you know that cheetahs are the only big cats capable of purring?)

Today I learned that Startup Repair isn't half as bad as pessimistic me made it out to be. I was worried that it had rolled Docking Station back as well when the malware was back but my fears were for nothing.

Today I learned that you should do your own car repairs, or have someone you know well do them for you. Otherwise, you may end up with deep gashes across your bumper which weren't there before. [nblank]

I also learned that the pony I volunteered to lead around really likes headbutting people in the leg. x_x

...And that Merlin season 5 is finally on Netflix. :D

Today, I learned from my husband that jogging in place could be bad for me. I tend to disagree but I should start jogging outside anyway. I've also learned that taking Oestrogen birth control makes me very, VERY moody.

kezune, sadly it was indeed from personal experience

Today I learned that you can in fact get tired of eating too many strawberries. After pigging out in the garden, no matter how incredibly good they are, . . . One still gets sugared out.

Today I learned how to apply mascara perfectly and clump-free! XDD
You take one of those little metal or plastic eyelash/eyebrow combs and rub the loaded mascara brush perpendicularly on just the tips of the comb's teeth, and then run the comb through your lashes starting at the roots. Works like a charm! TwT

Today, I learned that you can make cheap acrylic yarn softer by washing it with shampoo and conditioner, like you would your own hair, rinsing it in the washer, drying it partially in the dryer and then, while it's still damp, blocking your work and allowing it to air dry. Crazy, right?

7.17.2013

Today I learned that crickets are omnivorous and how to identify a funnel web spider and a trapdoor spider.

And today, I learned that the word "desiccation" has one s and two c's, rather than the other way around. I was surprised.

Also (two for the price of one today) I found out that finches in the UK and Europe are being killed by a parasitic protozoan called trichomonas. But it can't survive desiccation, so letting bird baths dry out is a good way of getting rid of it.

Oh wow. D: It's good to know that there's a simple solution!

Today, I learned that it's called a "Pump" and not a "Station" at the Gas Station today. XD *Lived in Japan too long*

Today I learned (OK, I learned this in Japan with our other dog after calling our vet) that pure saline drops are safe to use in dogs. Eye irritation? Give them saline drops, put an elizabethan collar on them and call the vet again in the morning.

I knew a bit about Enron Corporation's unscrupulous trading practices, but TIL that Enron had peculiar names for its unscrupulous energy-trading practices. For example, to get around California's price caps, Enron "ricocheted" power by selling it out-of-state and then reselling it in California. (The price caps only applied to power bought and generated in California.) "Black widowing" was a form of "creative accounting" where you introduced errors into risky transactions so you could invalidate those transactions if they turned out to be unprofitable.

Not something I learned today, but I thought it'd be especially interesting to the Creatures community, since the community is very interested in AI. These are short definitions and examples of punishment and reinforcement. I've replaced the words "positive" with "additive", and "negative" to "subtractive". I think it's less confusing that way, since "positive" has a connotation of being good and "negative" has a connotation of being bad. A word of caution: changing a behaviour doesn't mean you've resolved the causes of that behaviour. The subject could still be hungry, scared, and so on. Warning signs are the last thing you should suppress, unless you really want something bad to happen.

Additive punishment - Subject presents undesirable behaviour. An unpleasant stimulus is introduced.
Person makes fun of your name. He is hit over the head with a shovel.

Subtractive punishment - Subject presents undesirable behaviour. A pleasant stimulus is removed.
The kids don't clean their room. Their toys are taken away.

Additive reinforcement - Subject presents desirable behaviour. A pleasant stimulus is introduced.
A game reviewer doesn't talk about the flaws of a game at all. Publisher gives reviewer exclusive, first-time access to high-profile games to write hot articles about.

Subtractive reinforcement - Subject presents desirable behaviour. An unpleasant stimulus is removed.
Hungry bondi norn eats critter. Hunger for protein decreases.

Today, whilst playing The Albian Years, I learned that if a Norn happens to somehow pop an egg out into the ocean where the Submarine is (oops!) the Norn still hatches and magically appears on the porch!

I was expecting the game to crash or Norn to hatch then die instantly. Thankfully I screenshot the before-hatched-egg sitting in the sea and then the hatched Norn a second after it hatched - he had the BIGGEST smile!
