I just received an email that the host of Creatures Caves is raising their monthly rate. The Ads by Google have not been generating any revenue to balance this out so there is a possibility that the website may only be open for a few more months. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Hmmm.. Well, I could suggest you could host it yourself, http://www.practicalpc.co.uk/...hostyourownsite.htm

The way I see it is: You are in college now, and while this site is a great community portal, it really isn’t generating enough traffic to keep it open at your expense. I advise backing the whole thing up, and taking it offline until the series is revived and consider reopening when that time comes, provided you are willing and have the means. |

Meh, remember back when it was so popular that it went over bandwidth limits?
Yes, I'm the forum ... Any questions?

I wish I had a suggestion to offer. I know nothing about site hosting, however.
I'd hate to see CC close down again, but if you can't justify leaving it open, Rascii, especially if they're jacking up the price, then I won't blame you for taking it down.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Hosting can be hugely expensive nowadays. What is your bandwidth usage and monthly cost Rascii?
For the bandwidth I use (with the DS downloads) my hosting had been coming to to at least $370/year recently, instead of the $40/year it would have been if I lived in the US. The same applied to domain name costs as well.

It's really not that expensive and I can easily afford it but its just an inconvenience and I am sort of a broke college student. And as Moe said, if the series were more popular I would have more incentive to keep it open.

So its not really a money issue for taking the website offline for a time?

You could go free hosting, the one I use gives you 350mb and no ads.
But then you'd lose the easy creaturescaves.com address, and that looks nice and professional. |

Hi, I've only been visitng Creaturse Caves for a short while now, and in that time I see to have accumalated a small amount of bad karma here, however, I hope that you don't mind me making a suggestion. The project that I am involved with currently is hosted at Zephyr Hosting, http://www.zephyrhosting.net. They generally seem pretty reliable, and they are free after an application, without any advertisements. It also has the advantage that you can keep your domain. Using this hosting company or someone similar could probably help keep Creatures Caves online. It would be a harsh blow to the community to have one of the main community sites taken down, so perhaps it would be worthwhile trying this. Alternatively you could try asking for donations. I am sure that many Creatures Caves regulars would put a small amount of money forward to keep you online. Hope you do stay up . |

If Creatures Caves does close down (it will be a very sad day if it does), we'll have to make do with A2K or the smaller forums out there like mine an KC11's.
I don't want CC.com to go. |

And also, I miss the times when CC would overload now. XD

Oh-my. Well, I sugest that if we go out, we goout with a bang. That is unless somone can do a little scouting for cheaper hosting. i would feel like a peice of dust in the wind if CC would go down; These forums seem more excusive, like everyone knows everyone. Everywhere else is, well...
...anti-social (by internet terms).
I would probably have to migrate to habbo (if you have heard of it). Its the people here that make it special. Lets see if we can do somthing about it.

awmanman, you realize that moving a site to a different host is a huge pain? Money's not the issue here, its the fact that this is a sadly dying community, the fact that the games have very little support and waning interest, and the fact that no one has anything to say lately. Rascii doesn't have the time to even show up more than once in a blue moon, you think he's gonna bother to move a whole site right now? (sorry Rascii, you know its true )
Sad but what can you do? The community's not gonna revive itself on its own.
Yes, I'm the forum ... Any questions?

Rascii has said, "It's really not that expensive and I can easily afford it"; so its not really a money issue and thus finding a cheaper host wouldn't help.

That's more or less what's been happening for the past few years now. The community used to be *huge* compared to what it is now. But even a cult following can only exist for so long among a few veterans and a few newbies who discovered the games a bit late.
JRC still seems to be kinda alive, if you want to talk to Creaturesy people. Always an alternative.

Yeah, see, but you can't close the website down! Whats all this bull about money problems? So what? If you close this site down it'll be like a little piece of your nose has been chipped off and you're never going to see it again. And we need our noses. All of it.
Theres got to be a way to keep this place open. Theres got to be.

Hmmm... This isn't good news.
Thankfully, I have an alternative. If CC were to close down, I could offer hosting at creatures.tonjevic.net if it's absolutely necessary. I would administer and maintain it and stuff, and it's not likely that the hosting would go down for any great period of time.
I'm not saying that this is the best alternative, but it is a contingency plan.
There is also the alternative of just handing over the domain and stuff, as well.
I dunno. All I can say is that I'm here to help. |

I would recommend NearlyFreeSpeech.net. If they provide the services you need, the price is probably better than you can get elsewhere, unless you're really using bandwidth. Best part is, if the site isn't popular, it'll automatically cost less! Though I think CC is quite popular.
Given they charge per Gb, might be a good excuse to trim the size of those 50-100kb pictures on the front page.
You might also want to consider GZip compression. This incredibly simple addition can really improve both site responsiveness and the bandwidth usage of your site. For example, the first page of this thread is 52,770 bytes uncompressed, but just 9,484 even at the very lowest level of compression.
