A Creatures 2 Wolfling Run Series

[nskull] The Prodigal Norn Returns [nskull]

Hello and welcome to the sequel to my "TheDrunkenNorn's Wolfling Runs" series! To those of you who are familiar with my exploits, you'll know that my entire goal has been to Darwinize Norns (typically to extinction). I've finally returned (getting my Windows 10 system to somehow handle this game, despite its every attempt to thwart me), and I'm ready to rumble.

For those unfamiliar with my previous Wolfling Run series (complete with many, many broken links and bad grammar), please click here to see a bit of my Wolfling history.

For those unfamiliar with Wolfling Runs, this article from the wiki should enlighten you. Essentially, Wolfling Runs are an extreme version of Feral runs: that is, allowing Norns to grow, breed, and develop into societies and generations completely without player input (apart from a few beginner items, I'm using the Relaxed version of Wolfling runs to allow them a chance at survival).

The next post will be regarding the first Wolfing Run, which will be derived entirely from Norns uploaded to CreaturesCaves!

It's good to be back.

To start off, I'm going very simple: Albian Grey Norns with Akamai Canny lobes. Back to the basics.

As before, I use the Meat Vine cob to feed them, the Water Fountain cob to hydrate them, Ocean Bridges to allow for ease of access across Albia, and finally, a new cob called Kill All Elevators, which allows for a wolfling-run appropriate world right out of the gate. As well, I use the Flying Saucer cob to move norns, the Live Birth cob to ease wolfling birth, and Learning Computer v2 to start the first generation off... *educated*. Because the learning computer is going to be available to the norns, future generations may be able to teach themselves language as well. Most (if not all) of these cobs can be found on CreaturesCaves.

Due to the inability for Windows 10 to handle much third-party software, I will not be using Wolfling Monitor. This means that every norn in the world will be titled "UnNamed", and that I will be unable to track the generations, for now. To make up for that, I will be doing my best to upload the freakish mutants that spawn from these Darwinian prospects for all the CreaturesCaves to enjoy.

I've spawned eight into the world, teaching them all language before letting them loose. A picture of the little buggers may be found below!

The strangest occurrence so far is this: a baby Grey Norn got angry because it was very hungry, and it was very hungry because it would try to "Eat Norn" and "Eat Computer" instead of "Eat Food". Babies chew on anything.

@IrateRedKite

Norns in crowds have trouble taking care of their needs (they get obsessed with interactivity). The most social Norns die first, usually of starvation (note: I put food in all of the major Norn hangouts).

You'll love the next one. I left the game on for an entire day.

The Norns are doing well. Many of them are happy, and even more are elderly. They're surviving to the ridiculously long 10 hour lifespan that Akamai Cannies boast, and that's quite a feat for norns that haven't been taught anything except language.

I see Akamai Cannies sleeping a lot more than normal Norn populations. It may have something to do with Albian Updates as well, but I don't remember Creatures 2 being this easy-going. Many of the norns are living quality, long lives, and that's something I've not seen too often. Overbreeding, sure. Quality of life? That's rare, kid. [ngrin]

That said, there's enough dead Norns to make an Army of Darkness. Groovy.

A gorgeous pink hue has mutated onto one of the Norns. Interesting! But, far more importantly...

Another mutation has caused a Norn to have a completely different head type, this time one from Creatures 1, the "dog" head. I hate this. They did this just to spite me for torturing them. Ah well. It's still very interesting, especially on a scientific level. If they are already experiencing physical mutations, then the entire population must be having extreme internal changes. Fascinating!

Here are a few more pictures of them, including one of both the mutated Norns togther.

Seeing the wholesome sight of a once-sad Norn playing with a toy racecar, and seeing their cute little face light up with joy, really makes me wonder why I'm so cruel to them. I suppose I'm not a harmful god to them: just an indifferent one. But this was so cute. I named her Racecar due to this.

More happy Norns. Life is good. The pink legged one is always at 100% hunger drive, but she isn't upset and never seems to eat. Probably a result of further mutations?

This is the dog-headed Creatures 1 Norn. Full exhaustion, full hunger, totally happy. Something is amiss among the mutants of this clan of Norns. Or, uh, maybe Creatures 1 Norns don't have dynamic expressions. Who knows?

I noticed this with a population of C256 Bulbous Grendels I hatched! If you let them do anything other than hang out in pairs they just sort of got into one big hugbox and spent their entire time praising one another. It does make me wonder a bit if the original C2 genome designers assumed people would spread their populations all over the map!

Whoa, it's neat how the one with pink legs has only pink legs. I thought any color mutations would affect the whole norn, but apparently that's not how it works?

The pink legs are probably a sprite mutation (like the head mutation on the other one) rather than a color mutation. As for the norn stuck below ground, they fell through a tiny hole in the room map. Also that spot is close to the seam of the world map, where the edges of the world over lap. I've seen creatures get stuck in that spot a lot.

@Alyssa

The pink legs are a result of a mutation gained from the Flora Norn, whose female legs are pink.

@Mea

Precisely! As I explained to Alyssa, this is exactly what happened. Some of the current Norns have normal brown legs, in fact, due to similar leg mutations. Leg mutations are very common in this clan of Norns.

@FlyingEttiNorn

Clever username! And that sounds like quite the endeavor. You won't see me attempting it. At least you have some kind of base for it, having the C2 Norn sprites available. Funny, that the C1 Norns were updated to C2 yet their sprites were not updated to the new tech. Interesting.

@IrateRedKite

Seems to be a problem with many Norn breeds in C2. Does anyone know if C1 and C3 have these issues?

Quite the statistics up there. Check out that death count! This is more telling of how long the run has been going, rather than the lethality of said run. Many of these Norns died of the cold during winters or of old age

Fun note: I have a gaming computer, one intended to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 FPS during any condition, and one week of Creatures 2 being left on has brought my computer to its knees. I think this series may have memory leak issues, especially on a Windows 10 system.

Another "fun" technological issue is my game crashes when looking at the volcano. It doesn't crash anywhere else, but something must be amiss at the volcano. I feel that the stability of this world is waning over time. I hope this doesn't affect things too drastically. I promise: I'll be exporting some Norns from this world when things get too bad. I want to put out a couple for CreaturesCaves to adopt!

Yikes! How many ingame years are you at now? Are you running Creatures with dxwrapper or without? I find I can't keep the game running stable for more than a couple of hours, especially if I'm actively doing stuff in it.

Interesting. I'm currently running my C2 WR and I'm using Wolfing Monitor with no issues, Windows 10 H2. Only thing that comes to mind is that maybe the VB6 runtime files required by Wolfing Monitor have been corrupted somehow?

Click on View and then on Status Bar. A new information bar should appear at the bottom, showing current season and current year along with time of day and temperature where the current selected creature is. DXWrapper is a fix for C2 being rather crash happy on modern Windows 10 systems. You can find it here: https://github.com/elishacloud/dxwrapper/wiki/Creatures-2%3A-The-Albian-Years

@creature_345

I just obtained the appropriate Visual Basic 6 (VB6) runtime files from the same site that Wofling Monitor is on. All you should need to do is extract the files of that zip file, and then run the "setup.exe" file and it should install the necessary files.

This run is concluding, mostly because my world's stability has gone into the toilet. But, have no fear! Two of my norns, Cutie Pie and Theridus, have been made available for adoption. They have Albia Grays sprites and, in particular, Theridus has mutant legs that could honestly be from anywhere.

This was very entertaining. Watching Norns grow up and evolve into mutant sub-breeds has always been a charm of this game. No strong pigmentation mutations, sadly, but it has been very fun!

Honestly, I don't know what run is next. I'll figure it out soon though!
