Saya was born on a foggy beach from an egg laid after her mother had died. She didn't learn of this information until close to the end of her life, but to say that it didn't affect her would be lying. In fact, the repercussions of it made her life rather interesting.

Her father and sister were amphibious grendelchis, but Saya took after her mother in that she was solely an air-breathing creature (at least, she was unwilling to test it out and had no reason to believe that she could breathe underwater). That said, she did find herself enjoying places where moisture was high; in particular, she liked very foggy beaches.

Those traits were hardly her most unusual, however. That title belonged to the song that followed her around. To other creatchis, it played all the time, seemed to come from inside their heads as opposed to an outside source, and sounded odd and haunting. Saya herself, on the other hand, wasn't able to hear it until she was almost old. She never learned the cause of it in life, beyond that it was connected to her unusual birth.

Most of her life was surprisingly ordinary. As a child, she made friends with several other grendelchis, notably a fiery-colored one who went by the name of Bramble. After realizing their shared similarities, Saya eventually decided to marry Bramble, and between them two kids were produced. She never did get to meet them while she was still alive, but nevertheless tended dutifully to them and took great pains in ensuring that they would know their heritage, unlike she herself did.

The last leg of her life was also the most interesting part of it. That was when the song finally revealed itself to her, and lead her to the grave of her mother. There, Saya learned that her mother died a while before her egg was laid. The revelation sent her into a state of shock, making her question the nature of her own existence.

Upon reaching old age, however, Saya realized just how pointless it was to spend her last days worrying like that. She got over it, and after saying goodbye to her then-unhatched children and husband she enlisted the song's help in finding the graves of her father and sister. The pilgrimage eventually ended at the same beach where she was born, and it was there that death finally took her.

So ends the saga of the Grendelchi of no mother born. May she rest in peace.

The place the song leads Saya to this time is not back home to her eggs and husband, nor is it to the grave of another one of her relatives. Instead, she finds herself standing on the shoreline of the foggy beach where she was born.

She looks around with a puzzled expression. She does remember this place, for it was where she had first met the ettinchi, Hannibal, who pointed her in the right direction to find other members of her race and presumably set her up to meet Bramble, have kids, and find out about her unusual birth. But what is so important about it now? Other than its significance as her birthplace, there's nothing here that stands out to her.

She then thinks about what the song said back at Swift's grave. "Return." It wanted her to "return." Suddenly, it all comes together. Her life is almost at its end, and the song wants to bring it full circle. She was born here on this beach, even if it was alone, and now she is going to die here.

Though she knows her end is near, Saya feels oddly serene. She has done much with her life, starting with hunting down fellow Grendelchis and ending it with a pilgrimage to learn about her family history. With luck, she too would have a grave where her descendants, friends, or even the curious could learn what she did with her life, just as she herself did at her family's graves. Soon, she would be able to meet with her family and have a proper face-to-face meeting at last.

All that's not even getting into the identity of the song. In death, perhaps, she would find out just where it was coming from and why it had chosen to follow her around. Beyond that it was related to her unusual birth, she hadn't learned much about it.

With a sigh, she lies down, feeling the fog of the beach against her skin, listening to the waves crash and the song's melody change from sad to soothing to see her off to her destiny....

When Saya finally returns home from her impromptu pilgrimage, she still hasn't gotten over the shock of the revelation. As she tends to her needs and checks on her still unhatched children, she question herself again and again. Was her existence natural? Did she even count as a living creature? If not, then what was she?

As she goes to get a drink, she's hit with yet another revelation upon viewing her reflection: her hair has gone gray. When did that happen? She couldn't have gotten old that quickly!

She stares at her reflection for a while, trying to make heads or tails of it, before drawing a connection between her constant worrying and her new look. She'd spent so much time questioning her life that the sheer stress caused her to age. Or maybe she'd wasted enough time that old age crept up on her when she wasn't paying attention. Either way, it means the same thing: her worries are distracting her from her life.

At that moment, her resolve comes back. Yes, the circumstances of her birth were unusual. It may even explain the presence of the song. But did it define her as a creature? No, and it shouldn't. It doesn't matter what it meant for her. She has a loving husband and two unhatched children, which means that she is indeed a living, breathing grendel. If she keeps worrying about it, she'd waste the last leg of her life doing nothing at all. Would that make other creatchis remember her fondly? No. If anything, they would all laugh at the moment she was brought up!

At the thought, her hands clench into fists, and she glares at her reflection. She may not have long left in this world, but that doesn't mean she can't make the most of it. She is going to go out with a bang. And what better way to go than by completing the pilgrimage that started when she first found her mother's grave? She would be joining her parents soon; she may as well at least learn what to expect when they finally meet face to face.

She knows she just got home, but it is time to head out once again. But first, she needs to prepare.

Saya's life, up until this point, had been surprisingly ordinary. She had a family now, even if her children had yet to hatch, and she was grateful for it. At the very least, she'd almost forgotten about the odd song that others had told her about.

"Almost" being the key word there.

One day, as she tended to her offspring's well-being, she heard the odd music for herself. She tilted her head to one side, trying to figure out where it was coming from. It didn't take her long to realize that this song was the same one that others had told her about. Why couldn't she hear it before now?

She listened closely, and finally determined that it was trying to say something, in its own unusual way. Namely, that it wanted her to "follow." Follow what? As she looked around, she saw nothing that could be followed.

Utterly baffled, she set off in search of her husband. Maybe he could help her decipher this mystery.

Fig walks slowly towards the strange grendel, "Well hey there! I'm Fig." he says with a big grendelish grin

I put up the do not disturb sign on Bramble, so he is free to socialize with Saya.

Saya grins and thanks Hannibal for his assistance. She doesn't say anything one way or the other about the offer for books, however, most likely because she doesn't know what they are.

She then goes off in the direction Hannibal pointed in, going off as fast as her legs could take her.

It takes Hannibal a while to figure out what Saya is asking. Once he's deciphered it, he replies that he does, in fact, know another member of her species and directs her to the Swamp that the Grendelchi was last seen in. He also offers to lend her books on Grendelchi anatomy, language, and culture, although he's not sure if she'd be able to read them.

Upon seeing the Ettinchi's confused response, Saya simply assumes that Hannibal is hearing things. She decides not to let it get to her for now; there would be plenty of time to looking into it later.

So instead, she turns her attention to something else of interest. Hannibal could speak her language. Did that mean that he knew where to find other members of her species?

She attempts to ask him if he'd seen other creatures like her. Having never spoken before, however, it comes out somewhat awkwardly.

It appears Saya can't hear the music. Hannibal thinks this is a very curious phenomenon, warranting further study. He hopes he isn't going insane...
