Introduction and some code requests.

Alright so, hello everyone! I'm Tamerman, and as you can probably guess, I’m new here. I'm making this thread as this is a little more then just an introduction, but if there is a better place for this to go then I’m sorry, just point me in the right direction and I’ll be out of your hair.

Anyways, I’ve recently started getting back into this game, trying to resume a little lets-play-esq thing i have going on another forum, and i saw here while looking for some mods to the game that there are still people active here even now in 2014. Hoping i could find some answers to some stuff I’ve been looking for for awhile now, i immediately signed up.

I'm a geneticist at heart, so naturally this game is perfect for me, but here's the thing, I’ve got two or three issues with the game as it is, the first is that, at some point in my little lets-play thing, I’m planning on getting locked in the desert terrarium to take care of the Ettins there, the biggest issue is however, that there isn't any food in the desert terrarium. So what I’m wondering is, does anybody know of/how to make some food agents that can live and spread in the desert? Something that doesn't need a vender and instead grows and spreads naturally would be preferable, and while unnecessary, something that also includes the chemicals needed to reduce/negate the radiation and heavy metals of the volcano constantly going off would be nice.

Secondly, I’ve noticed in my wolfing runs that things seem to go smoothest with just a couple of males and mostly females, indeed one of my most successful wolfing runs had a male that sired well over fifteen children, even to the point where a female's daughter, mother, and grandmother all shared him as their father. Indeed most if not all of my runs have died out due to too many males being born and not enough females. I've already downloaded and put in the no-seasonal-gender-bias mod, but is it at all possible to alter it slightly so that females are more likely to be born then males? Say maybe a 75% chance all seasons, or 75-90% most seasons and 50% for say winter or summer? Could someone show me how to do this?

And lastly, another issue I’ve come across is the population limit, where after awhile the creatures just stop laying eggs, which can be problematic if all the females grow too old to lay more before anyone dies. Does anyone know how to increase this limit? It might be partly my own fault as i like to put eggs into my inventory so i can either try to reboot the species should it start to wane, or just use in future splicing (i.e. Breeding Grendels and saving the eggs so i'll have plenty to use if i want to splice them with Norns later on down the road, without needing to wait twenty minutes for the Grendel layer to pop out only two eggs) but even if it's not it would be really helpful if i could increase that limit just to ensure the species survives. Does anyone know where i can find something like this?

I'm new to this whole modding thing, so I’m sorry if all of this is too much for one post in what is probably the wrong sub forum, so I’m sorry. I'd be willing to commission (i.e. Pay) someone who can make these things for me, as so far my google searches have yielded very few results.

All of that said, I’m sorry for the large post, hello to everyone, hopefully I’ll like it here, and with any luck I’ll be able to learn a bit more about the COS, CAOS, and agent coding stuff so i won't need to ask so many questions. Thanks to anyone who managed to read all of this, sorry again if i did something wrong, i didn't mean too.

To increase population limit, and the limit of creatures to be around when eggs hatch in c3/ds, go into the options pullout (middle drawer on the right), and in there you will see the limits and can change them... the default I believe are 16 population, and 6 creatures maximum before eggs stop hatching.

I am pretty sure that in c3 without ds, there is a panel somewhere, it might require a creature to activate a key to use it though, I'm not sure it's been a long time since i played c3 without DS. DS is free if you don't have it.

The DustDevil Grendels come with some very nice agents for the Ettin Desert. :)

Does anybody have any experince with the Desert Terrarium Fixes mod? it looks tempting, but i'm a little hesitent as it overwrites some pre-existing files.

and i'll have a look at the dustdevil codes, thanks!

edit: can't seem to download it. dang.

Hello, tamerman! Welcome to Creatures Caves! :) It's nice to see a newcomer with such an invested interest in Creatures, and with their own ideas in tow!

I'm new to this whole modding thing, so I’m sorry if all of this is too much for one post in what is probably the wrong sub forum, so I’m sorry. I'd be willing to commission (i.e. Pay) someone who can make these things for me, as so far my google searches have yielded very few results.

Have you had a browse through our Development section for tutorials yet? Don't worry about paying someone to code for you, our community doesn't work that way. Everything is coded pro bono here. ;) What I would suggest though is posting any new ideas you may have in our Ideas Pool topic; hopefully a coder may take an interest in the project and pick it up! It also helps to keep everyone's ideas in one place.

ahh okay, don't have either of my worlds docket yet so i'm not able to do that just yet. i can dock one world and not the other right? can i still acess the docked world from C3's icon?

I believe there's no limit as to how many docked worlds you can have, although please don't quote me because I've never actually tested this myself. Just having one docked world, overcrowded with Norns, is a big drain on my computer's resources!

I hope this helps!

Welcome to the forum Tamerman!

As for food in the Ettin Desert, if you fiddle with the terrarium's heat, light and water you can alter it enough that regular plants like grass and Bramboo will grow there. It's a bit tricky though. You could also try third-party food sources; usermade plants are generally less finicky. The Dustdevil Grendel breed pack does come with plants like aloe and the sunflower which were specially made to provide more edibles in that terrarium (fruit and seeds respectively), but there are also plants like the rainbow shrooms that don't have much of any requirements and will grow basically anywhere.

As far as breeding limit... I'm guess you're using C3, because in DS it's changeable from the middle menu on the right. In C3 you have to use a cheat code, or there might be a third-party agent that makes it more accessible. But there isn't a powerup that enables easier population adjustment in C3.

As far as docked worlds limit, the only real "limit" is that a DS world can't be played in C3, so no you can't access it from C3's icon, you have to play it through DS... but you can dock as many worlds as you want, or even create brand new, already docked worlds through DS.

I believe the DS bramboo does not even need altered conditions to sprout in the desert. It's only problem is being very delicious, so it dies out quickly anyways.
Alternatively, what you could do is getting an invisible vendor and hook it up to a pulse switch or something like that. Or even better: get the garden box and use a few patch plants.
Radiation probably can be reduced by lowering the amount of heavy metals in a creature's blood stream.

Regarding C3 vs docked, Ghosthande already nailed it. When you start DS, you can "upgrade" C3 worlds into docked ones, but once you did said upgrade, you can no longer use that world by starting C3. DS has a few additional sprites and sounds and stuff which would suddenly be missing (DS can access C3 files, but NOT vice versa), additionally DS got a slightly newer engine than C3, hence some agents might be using commands that C3 simply does not know, throwing you a plenty of errors.

For the increased number of females, you had to remove the No Seasonal Gender Bias patch again and then mess around in the breeding scripts yourself. Adding a different bias than the current one should be a matter of tweaking a few numbers.

Lastly, did you know that there is also a "secret" breeding limit for eggs? At least in DS there is one. By default you can have no more than (max population + 4) eggs in one world. There was some way to change that 4 to a smaller or much higher number, though. If you want to do that and if you want to upgrade to DS, I can look for an according way to accomplish it.

Ohh okay, those look promising, i'll have to look through them later on, thanks!

Yeah i tried looking around the no-seasonal gender bias code to see if there was a way to tweak it to prefer females, but i sadly didn't see anything of the sort in there. I'll try visiting that tutorial place later and see if i can't at least figure out that little bit of code, and figure out how to create/edit COS files of course.

That sounds great to me.

For the whole docking thing, i might do that to my Wolfing run/fiddling around world if it means higher populaition and all that, though i'd preffer to keep the pseudo lets-play world wich i need the desert food on undocked for the moment.
