Creating Player-Made Content?

Just looked at the forum again after a period of absence due to school. Something suddenly hit me! If player made content ever becomes available for Creatures Online (yes I know its not out yet) what program should we use? I predict it could possibly be Unity and a mix of Blender, Maya, depending on compatibility.

Thought this might be a good time to bring it up before it comes out. Nothing sucks more then getting a game and finding out what you need to mod it is:
a. Expensive
b. Unfamiliar
c. Impossible to download or otherwise obtain

Do we know what the Creatures Online team are using at present?

Blender's neither expensive or difficult to obtain, and it handles a really wide array of filetypes, including those used by 3D games (including Sims 2).

Since adding mod-ability would be an intentional effort on Fishing Cactus's part, it would make zero sense for them to go out of their way and put time and money into making a system where only .01% of the fanbase will be able to make anything. Nobody would benefit. I think it's safe to say that whatever the requirements would be for third-party modders, they wouldn't be something as absurd as Maya. But Blender seems like it would be a fairly likely candidate.

Many professional game programmers and companies completely write their own tools. Maybe they offer that or at least a downgraded version of that.

I am aware blender is free, and I mentioned Maya because Autodesk is allowing art students and such who apply to get free versions of it and other products.
Though...do you think an app or software would be made available on the website to allow for mods. I've seen a few programs like Minecraft that had given access like that. But when it comes down to it, they will probably provide free downloads of uvs for objects and Norns for textures.

I suspect Papriko is right on the money; that was what Creatures Labs did for the older games, and it wouldn't surprise me if Fishing Cactus followed suit.

Personally, my guess is that if FC does allow very much freedom with custom content, we might end up seeing programs that convert CO files into more standard formats... sort of like how SpriteBuilder converts .C16 frames to BMPs but you still need a real graphics program to edit them. A converter seems like it would be easier to make than a full-blown editor, since we're (potentially) talking about editing 3D models. It would be nifty for us too, since it would enable 3rd party developers to use whatever programs they wanted to edit the converted files.

Hmm. Maybe I should start writing my Christmas list... [nsanta]

Considering that mod tools would potentially lessen revenue from DLC, I'm not sure mod tools would be a good move. I imagine Creatures Online has already been an expensive project -- if they do release mod tools, I hope it's in a few years when they've recouped their funds and made some profit!

That said, of course I love mods, so... :) Either way, I'm more than happy to continue modding for C3/DS anyway!

Liam, do you think they could make extra money selling special apps or software? Also it seems the setup is very much like some of the later titles in the series where they had a creatures item mall complete with breeds and cobs, but I think they also allowed mods too, so how should it be any different now? Other then the fact it may try to pull a freemium game on us.

Fishing Cactus aren't Creature Labs - they're unlikely to adopt Creature Labs' model for selling development apps. The most recent thing we've heard about 3rd party development is from the facebook page (October 2013):

"Despite the free-to-play nature of #Creatures and the obvious implications of that on the "opening the game" to the community, we would love in the future to get around to having some form of support of user-created content. We've always been straightforward about the fact that when the game is released we will hear the community about the direction it wants the game to go to. All options are open really (for instance we've thought about the "team fortress" kind of moderated user generated content) but ultimately the evolution will likely follow the will of the community. It's hard for us to bet on support for modding that will maybe only interest 1% of the players considering we don't have the resource to be as big as, say, Little Big Planet. We'll gladly do it though if we see there's an overwhelming number of players that want it"

Giving players the ability to make 3rd party content does not, in my opinion or observation, cut into revenues. People will always want professional grade items. Why even now, a decade later, people want the CL mall breeds. Creatures Online will fall to the wayside if they don't eventually let players make content.

That said, I'm with Liam. There's still a lot we can do with the old engine and games. Whatever comes of CO, we'll always have classic Creatures and incredible content made by a talented community. Moreover, I'm hoping at some point we see the openc2e project revived...

Sophie says that the programs she knows of that are used by the art team are:

-Photoshop
-Illustrator
-Particle universe
-3DS Max
-Maya

AlbianPrincess, you might like to check out openc2e on the Creatures Wiki. :)

Oh, I just emailed fishing cactus and got a reply from the lead designer on creatures Andrea Di Stefano, this was part of the reply

Thank you for your email!

I’ve been discussing this with my colleagues and we’d like to distribute a Norn model with a basic blank skin so people could have some fun painting some textures and do anything they want with it.

I haven’t discussed the specifics with the art team yet so I can’t really go into much detail but they idea is nice and we’re up for it. Oh, I also need to…well…”get the permission” from our publisher who is usually pretty forthcoming, but you never know...

Anyway, no harm in asking right? :-)

The other part was telling me if I wanted to ask further to wait to email until after jan 6.

Still good to know that there is a good possibilty of getting a Norn template to decorate right:D

Painting norn templates would not be satisfying for me, because I am horrible at arts :P
But still, it's still nice that they are going to include some development stuff.
