This has been discussed numerous times before, but we haven't yet addressed this problem completely. Creatures Online is coming soon, and I expect it to bring lots of new people to the CC. However, the games that started the series aren't very easy to get started with nowadays, in the sense of downloading loads of patches, compatibility hacks and login bypassers. I hope that Fishing Cactus will be fixing these problems eventually, but I'm not sure if they're planning to. :\

I think Docking Station is still one of the best ways to get introduced to the series. For example, I want to introduce my friends to it, but I'm afraid that they get lost in the process of getting started with the game.

A lot of third-party work has already been done to improve Docking Station, but is it possible to bring it all together in a sort of "Community Remastred Edition"? I was thinking about something like Ninite, an installer that will download and install selected stuff automatically for you without any work.

What are your ideas?

In PRAY files you can define where to put individual dependency files. I am not sure which folders you can actually access and which not, but installing agents and egg agents might work. Cosfiles probably not, because it'd drop em into the main bootstrap directory and not one of the subdirectories.
You can also install several scripts right into the game.

So what I wanna say is this: I guess we could do one mega-agent which deposits several other things for you. Auto-installing CFE breeds, catalogue patches (such as my bibbleish for geats), script patches (maybe not as cosfile, but directly into the game) and much more.
You just had to download one big file, inject it, the game freezes for some moments and then everything is there.

Yo dawg, I heard you like agents, so I've put an agent into your agent so you can install stuff while you install stuff!

I'd also like to see sort of a quick start/tutorial guide - i'm sure that could be generic enough to apply to all the games. Even with the manuals, the games don't have any of this fancy tutorial stuff and it's really hard to know what to do first, what to do in certain situations (help my norn is sneezing/shivering/whimpering) and how to do things.

I tend to recommend people start with C1 - in part because you don't really need a thousand patches and fixes, but it's very hard to get started when you're new to the series.

I found that the Sybex guides were great for this sort of thing, but I doubt people really want to drop extra cash on books if they don't know if they'll like the series.

Well I for one think this is an excellent idea. I'd be happy to create a dedicated page for something like this and maybe we should have a sort of "What is Creatures?" page on Creatures Caves.

I think that's a great start. :) Now that DS is only available on Don's and TreeSprite's site after the Creature Labs website went cuckoo, I think it is essential that DS has a place on a hub like Creatures Caves.

I'd actually be willing to help write a quick start tutorial sort of thing, if anyone needs me to. I'm in a real contributing mood lately/

I agree that having a dedicated section on here for a Creatures 'Starter Kit' is a fantastic idea. To echo what Eprillios has said it really seems fitting, seeing as Creatures Caves is the one stop shop for Creatures and the community these days! We introduced a something similar with the welcome message for new users, and the suggestions for getting started around the website. As far as I can tell it's worked really well so far.

Slightly related, but I've always thought of Don's Creatures Docking Station page as a very informative starting point for Docking Station. Although, it could probably use more installation instructions (in regards to the DS Offline Option and adding metarooms) in order to be completely newbie-friendly.
