Since I now have several worlds full of (to use the words of the great Douglas Adams) healthy, clean-limbed norns merrily prancing their way through life without any need for much intervention or interference from me, I found myself wondering what else I could do with the little fluffballs to keep things interesting....and I have a couple of ideas.
1) In most feral or wolfling runs, the norns at least have access to something from which they can obtain proper language (even though many don't do it)...but what if they were raised in complete isolation from this and prevented in every possible way from learning their vocabulary? We've all seen that norns are certainly able to play and feed themselves without necessarily knowing the words for toys or food items...but over time, would this affect their behavior and well-being in comparison with a control group of norns who were given access to language (and if so, how)?
2) Can norns be conditioned through the use of positive reinforcement to engage in chained behaviors? Animal trainers teach their animals to perform complex tricks by initially reinforcing a simple behavior and then gradually rewarding the animal only when he or she performs it in a certain way. It's obvious that norns are receptive to reward and punishment...it would be interesting to see whether they can be trained in this way to perform something equivalent to a complex dog trick. |

1. I doubt that it would influence them much. I have the impression that they do not really listen to suggestions of each other anyways. Additionally it might be that they can understand their gibberish too.
So the lack of vocab probably mostly interfers with the hand-creature-communication.
2. I doubt that they can learn like that, but I may be wrong. You have the best chances with creatures which have better brains, such as CFE.

I don't know...those little furballs are a bit smarter than they look, I think, and they're certainly full of surprises. One C3DS CFE female norn I interacted with recently saw me bounce a ball off the wall of a meta-room in an attempt to get her attention and encourage her to play (since she was grousing about being bored) -- and then she started bouncing the ball against the wall herself so that it kept coming back at her for another toss. She kept this up for about a minute. |

C1 norns could certainly be trained to use vendors, a linked 2-part process. C3DS norns not so much, I don't know why - different instincts, maybe? In most of my DS worlds I've replaced vendors with plants, because norns seem to treat vendors like gadgets, i.e. something you only push if you're bored. I've seen a norn that was both bored and hungry starve to death surrounded by the seeds it had produced by compulsively pushing the seed jar. |

Chichis actually have an instinct to push vendors when hungry for fat (none for starch or protein, though). It doesn't look like you can set up a stim gene specifically for "pushed vendor"...
So the idea's there, at least if they need food specifically, but I can see where they'd just get into a loop of pushing the vendor because it makes them less hungry, without realizing they're making food. I don't know why they're dumber in that respect. |
