| Experimenting With Norns -- Update | |

Some of you may remember that I decided to conduct a little experiment with a group of DS norns which I trained to keep themselves sufficiently fed and amused, provided with full vocabulary courtesy of the vocabulizer agent, and then isolated in their own meta-room away from the HLM (but with plenty of food and toys) in order to see if their children could and would pick up skills and vocabulary from their parents.
I'm happy to report that while nearly all the offspring continue to have difficulty with the more abstract vocabulary items -- such as "bored" and "tired" and "friendly" -- as well as the qualifiers, they've managed to pick up at least a few if not most of the simple terms from their parents and peers such as "eat seed", "rest", and "retreat norn" without the assistance of any agents. They've also managed to pick up the necessary skills to keep themselves fed and amused so that with only one exception (a stillborn hatchling), every single one of the norns that has hatched in this environment has died of old age instead of malnutrition or starvation.
Perhaps the next step is to conduct the same experiment with a group of norns which can produce mutations (I'm fairly certain that most of the original group were CFE norns.) |

Normal CFE Norns can mutate too. AFAIK they only got some counter-measures against becoming highlanders or something like that.
The brain genes are locked too, but that applies for nearly all breeds, regardless of their CFEness. Doing not so usually causes somewhat fatal results.

The only conclusion I can draw about their continued inability to learn the abstract concepts and the qualifiers is that there isn't any reliable and obvious point of reference for them -- however, there is an obvious point of reference for a phrase such as "eat seed." When one of the older norns comments that he or she is eating a seed, the offspring can see that the other norn is picking up and eating something which is evidently called a seed -- and if the older norn can eat it, they can too. If I could teach them that the word for a seed is "truck", they'd probably end up saying "eat truck."
However, when the older norn says that he or she is bored or sleepy or something like that, the offspring can't really understand what that means. They seem to have their own word for it, but they aren't able to make a connection between their own inner state and the words used by the older norns...so they keep on using baby talk. It would appear that the only way to get them to understand these concepts is to have them implanted directly into their heads through agents such as the HLM or the vocabulizer or the vocabulary bot.
Actually, now that I think about it, the vocabulary bot -- which I gather functions a bit like a doozer in that it says a word when pushed or hit -- might be a useful tool to add to this little experiment of mine, as a way of seeing who learns and who doesn't. I've downloaded it but never used it since I've always viewed it as being a bit superfluous and inefficient when the HLM and the vocabulizer agents both provide a full vocabulary instantly. |
