I'm considering adding the option to comment on news posts in the revamp, similar to how people can comment on images in the galleries.
However, it seems that this would sort of conflict with the purpose of the news forum.
Therefore I would like to get everyone's opinion on the subject. Should I add news commenting, and if so, do you think it could work alongside the news forum? Could each feature serve different purposes? And if I do add the news commenting feature, should I remove the option to post the news story in the forums as well to reduce redundancy?

I wasn't sure at first, but now I actually welcome the idea of commenting on news posts and replacing the News forum. It might be nice having everything news-related in one place, and perhaps it'll also encourage more news to be posted on the frontpage? |

So do you think that once the revamp is introduced and news commenting starts, the news forum should be locked? Or it could remain open and used for discussing other news-y type stuff?

My only thought on that is the need for a News forum may disappear if news commenting is implemented; we'd be more inclined to discuss any news that way?
This is just my two cents though, I'm sure there's many other opinions. |

I was just thinking... There could be some occasions where someone would want to discuss a "news" topic that isn't really front page news material, for example: an update on a website or the update of a COB or something.

This is just a very tentative idea, but...
What about making it so that the first post of a news thread appears as a news column automatically? Would that work? Since no one is going to start a news thread unless they have news. Then maybe there could just be an 'opt out' option in case they didn't want it posted as actual news. That way it would still be a forum thread and could be accessed from the forum, but would also appear as a news post, with no need to post a separate announcement.
Although of course I don't know if it would work with the forum system...

Well that's basically just the reverse of the current news posting system.
Basically when you post a news article, it has the option "Add to forums: Yes/No". If you select yes, it creates a matching forum topic in the news forum and automatically adds the "Click here to discuss this news post in the forums!" link to the news article itself. I think this feature is available for mods+ only though.
I was planning on keeping this system for the revamp, but then it dawned on me that news commenting could be good.
I'm really torn on the subject. ><

How about this:
Posting a news article allows you to link it to a forum thread, which will work just like now.
Not linking an article to a forum thread will enable comments. (Might be a separate option so we can have commentless news as well)
So news not worthy of the front page goes in the forum.
Frontpage news not worthy of a true thread gets comments.
Frontpage news worthy of its own thread gets a thread.

I like AquaShee's idea! I'm guilty of not really using the news feature as much, mostly because I'm not sure what seems newsworthy. Laura usually politely bugs me! Maybe I'll have a news post soon... Better yet, hopefully there will be more news from lots of people!

I'd like to retain the ability to retrospectively add a thread to a news item - for those times when a thread is made, but the topic could also be a front page news post.
A news post is made, and the 'discuss this in the forums!' links to the original thread that the news is posted.
In regards to 'what is front page worthy?' - the answer is 'more than you think '. It's always exciting to see something new on the front page, and I imagine it's exciting to see something in the queue for news to be approved.

Honestly, I'm not sure I like the idea of segmenting discussion out more than it already is.
The more you move things out of the forum, the less active the forum is going to be overall. I would strongly encourage keeping all discussion to the forum itself, because it encourages people to browse the forums.

Comments are not, and should not be, discussions. We have a forum for discussions, which is exactly why the option to link certain news articles to a thread should be kept.
Comments are usually along the lines of praise and constructive/polite criticism directed directly and solely at the original article. People don't go browsing for that kind of stuff, they'll read it when they read the front page news and add a comment of their own.
Also, people lurve getting comments on their stuff which might encourage more news posts! The image galleries are rather active and already use comments.
