I guess it's time for a stupid question...
I've always wondered what exactly the genetic name of each creature meant or was determined, especially the "tree", "lake", "fern" part which seems a bit strange.
Does anyone knows if it has a true influence on the game?

The moniker is just a way of determining which genetic file goes with which creature, and a way of determining who is the parents. Monikers in C1 and C2 had a number and 3 letters after it - the C3/DS system lets you have many more combinations.
Norns tend to have 'pretty' sounding words, and grendels tend to have 'ugly' sounding words in theirs.
Hope this helps.

If you look in you DS Genome.catalogue file, you can see (and presumably edit, though I've never tried it) the words that the monikers are generated from.
But it doesn't have any actual influence on anything, no, it's just randomly chosen.

Oh well, that's almost disappointing.
Mystery solved! Thanks a lot.
