creaturescaves is arguably the most active Creatures forum still in existence.
The breedlists hosted previously at Mummy's Creatures and currently at Seeyou7 were/are extremely useful for quick reference and were/are much more user-friendly than the Creatures Wiki.
Would a community-editable breedlist for each game in a similar format on creaturescaves be possible/practical? |

Great idea, really. It's been a while so I honestly wasn't even aware Mummy's went down. Or maybe I was? can't remember.

Last time I checked, Mummy's was still up, but is no longer being updated. |

It would make a useful addition, with enough time and effort put into it. Shame Rascii's busy back in Korea at the moment, eh? |

Please outline what it should be able to do and what it should look like. For example, should the list be separated by game, should photos be included, etc.
Thanks.

I think it would have to be separated by game... especially since some breeds have been converted to later games.
Being able to sort breeds by slot would be my first request. The list at Mummy's, for instance, only (AFAIK) sorts breeds alphabetically by name. If you're looking for a slot to create a breed for, or making sure that breed you want to install won't conflict with others you might want... you're out of luck.
Otherwise, basic necessities would probably only really need to include the breed's name, its slot, the creator, their web site (or wherever it can be downloaded from), and maybe a short description. I do feel that pictures are a must, but if it's going to be editable then I'm sure members would be happy to submit their own images of each breed.

Oh, this would be really useful! I would like to second Ghosthande's suggestions but I think pictures should be optional as I would also hope to see genetic breeds (such as CFE and gizmo) included in the listing.

I have some idea of what I think the page should look like but I need to be gone within ten minutes. I'll definitely try to draw that up later today.
(only double posting because I have new info, is this bad?)
Spent a few hours thinking about this and I think I'm satisfied enough with it. The idea was to make it functional enough without taking huge amounts of space, but I think it might be too compact.
Let me know what you think. It's far from perfect but it's a start. |

So, if I'm understanding the diagram right, there'd need to be:
Individual breed slot pages for each game, which can also be sorted alphabetically, and a master list similar to seeyou7.net's.
The information that should be supplied is breed name, slot, genus, author, game, and where to download the breed from. Perhaps a description of the norn on mouseover...
Is this all right, Sander?

Do the columns alternate for any reason? I read it a couple of times and didn't see any note on that. Also, is there any specific reason to put the description in mouseover text?

@Malkin: Exactly. Pretty convoluted but again I really have no idea what I'm doing
@mfb: 'Alternate'?
No, I only suggested that to keep the page from getting too long. |

@Sander: clarification: It looks like the image flips columns every second breed; am I misreading the template?
I wouldn't worry about the page getting too long, it seems reasonable that descriptions can be kept to the size of tweets if it comes to it. Hover text is a nasty mess as far as accessibility is concerned (if you don't use JS, which is its own problem, you have to use tooltips, which expire after a time and are invisible to mobile browsers, etc...). But we'll see how it goes

I agree, there's not really a need to use hover text. And diferent browsers handle it in different ways, so even assuming the person knows there's a description if they hover over the image, it might not work for them anyways. It just isn't very user-friendly I'm afraid.
I think Mummy's is a good example of compactness. We don't need paragraphs and paragraphs to describe what a breed is like, a sentence or two will generally suffice. Long descriptions belong on the Creatures Wiki.

Why do you all act as if CU7 had no list sorted by slots? Ever clicked on one of the creatures' heads above the list? It will take you here.

A sortable list with categories like Creature type (Ettin, Geat, Grendel, Norn), Breed name, Slot and Creator would be nice. And a url to the download, sortable by host name (such as Mummy, Creaturescaves, A2K etc.) and a short description and image, if there is one, underneath each breed name. Also, there should be one last sorting option - genetic breed or breed with images.
For an example of a fairly easilly placed table, see:
http://www.kryogenix.org/code/browser/sorttable/
This would allow one to browse by each category in one page, without reloading anything if you want to change your sorting. |
