In case anyone's interested:
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |

Interesting thoughts, Ettina! I don't believe in Norn torture myself, but I understand some of the points of views that condone it. I can see how tortured creatures pretty much just experience short-term suffering. However, I would like to add that stress creates adrenaline, at least in the C1 genetics I'm used to. There are genes which stipulate that excess stress and adrenaline react with the aging chemical, thus reducing a Norn's lifespan.
Stress and adrenaline can be natural, such as through excess hunger or tiredness in Norns who are awful at caring for themselves. I've had some of those! But pain is another cause of cause and adrenaline: Although I understand that it doesn't create lasting psychological effects, inflicting continuous pain will cause the creature to die sooner.
Just some thoughts from a slightly different perspective! I appreciate how you included a lot of information to back up your ideas, rather than just saying "Norn torture is OK." Definitely got me thinking!

Hm... Interesting. I found a blog post by Steve Grand stating that norns do learn, but they can't think. So I wonder if it's the 'thinking' part you're referring to when you're talking about trauma?

Seems like odd logic. Like saying it's ok to torture amnesiacs because they won't remmeber it.
I'm interested to hear what Steve Grang will say is the difference that he's cracked with grandroids between 'simulated' artificial life and 'real' artificial life. |

Torturing a Norn and an amnesiac is hardly the same. People with amnesia still have their short term memory and will *know* they're being tortured. It's also quite possible their long term memory still records events properly which might cause the trauma to resurface.
A norn's train of thought will be something like this: I am going to eat this cheese. I am suddenly filled with Pain. This is a negative emotion, I shall avoid eating cheese. Oh a button. Push! I am filled with Pain. I shall try to avoid pushing the button. Okay, maybe not. Push!

I think norn torture is ok. I mean, I'm not about to start, and this might sound weird, but it actually fascinates me. Mostly about how ideas can be wired into a norn's brain thru pain or pleasure, and then how to reverse that.
I've actually tried to rehabilitate a few tortured C3 norns, with very mixed result. I think someday I am eventually going to try torturing, I know it sounds terrible and I'll probably be attacked for this...
Eh, I'mma stop this before I start getting bad ideas. I don't think I could torture just for the enjoyment, but rather like tying a really hard knot to try to untie it. If I ever found the urge to. I do think that torturing just for fun is kinda messed up and nearly as bad as in real life.
This made no sense, did it?

Proper norn torture is acting like GLaDOS infront of your norns, making them run tests with a death risk. |
