What do you think about having a Creatures Community server on Ventrilo? Right now, there's no server of such, but if someone would like to buy a server for the Community, we will have a substitute for the CC Chat.
Ventrilo is mainly used for MMO's, as a method of communication via voice chat. Now, imagine having a Ventrilo server for the CC. We will be able to talk to each other with voice instead of text.
Find out more about Ventrilo here.

there doesn't seem to be a massive demand for this kind of thing, plus my op/mother instincts find me worrying about the younger members of chat on this type of communication.
On the one hand, it's harder to lie about your age etc, but on the other some of the CC members using chat are basically children themselves. Ops, and other members of the community, will have much less control over abusive visitors, which I'm afraid we do get from time to time. Frankly I feel far less comfortable with a young member being unsupervised in an audio-chat than in a text one.
Another thing, we have quite a mash of languages here in the CC. English is the most widely spoken, I believe, and CC chat is mostly frequented by those who speak fluent English. However I know for a fact that many users who speak English as a second language find it much easier to understand and communicate in when written, rather than spoken. I'm not saying that makes the audio chatroom a bad idea, people might find it an interesting place to improve their skills, but it will effect how many users will regularly use the server. Which leads me onto my final point:
I just dont think the CC has the juice or the right audience to successfully run one of these. If the idea does take on massively, then perhaps the extra work, safety precautions and the like may be worth it. Or perhaps we could reserve a channel such as this for special events such as interviews for the Community Spirit Festival. But unless we get a real push for this server I'm not sure that it'll pay off in the end.

It's an idea, felinorn, and thank you for bringing it to our attention, but for the valid reasons that Lucia has pointed out, I prefer just having CC Chat on an old fashioned IRC server. Not only that, but Ventrilo wouldn't have the retro, nostalgic feel that reminds me of the good ol' times in the old JRChat. |

To be honest, I hate the idea of voice chat with anyone you do not know in real life. Talking to complete strangers through text is quite enough. There is also the afore mentioned problem of languages and accents. I, for one, apparantly have an accent that can occasionally be difficult to understand, and probably extremely difficult for people not fluent in English. I am fairly sure there are many other people just the same. Some people are also uncomfortable with how much you can tell about a person by his/her voice. |

Despite the complications, we won't know the output until we put your hypothesis to the test. Sure, voice communication does have its problems, but it beats using a keyboard by a long shot. And, because Trend Micro blocks Chat/Instant Messenging, I can't access CC Chat on any client, but Wyldryde.

Lucia has just given me some very good reasons to feel uncomfortable about using a voice communications server, like Ventrilo, so I'm afraid it won't be happening.
While you can't access CC Chat via a client, there's always Mibbit - or does that not work for you either? |

Sorry, Mibbit and Trend Micro don't agree with each other.

Sorry, I don't know what to suggest then. Perhaps someone else (like Don) will have a suggestion when they see this topic. |

First, try asking your parents if they can configure the Trend Micro parental controls correctly. The filter may (whether accidentally or intentional) be set at too strict.
If they can't help you, try another browser for using Mibbit - like Opera or Safari, TM doesn't support them at the moment I'm writing. As a last resort you could try to disable the browser extension in Internet Explorer or Firefox, in Firefox you can do that at:
Menu > Tools > Add-ons > Disable the corresponding extension.
If this protection is on the network, I can't help you much futher.
Note: I'm not responsible for any problems caused by this and the steps need to be followed at your own risk. You should ask your parents first.

I agree with Harlequinade, I don't mind voice chatting with my IRL friends, but with strangers I would much rather use text, so personally I'd stick with the IRC.

As much as I would love to see the community communicating as much as possible, I would not support voice chat. I think it's a great idea to bring up, of course! I agree with many of the other posts about privacy and language issues. I also think it's easier to chat online via typing, but perhaps that's just personal preference. It is an interesting thought, though, and I don't mean to sound like I'm against it! I just feel that the communication methods we have in place now are sufficient.
I hope that you can figure out how to get the CC Chat working, Ventrilo!
