Well I have this Norn, it's really odd and kind of annoying all at the same time. She keeps lying down and making that deathly 'sighing' I guess you could say 'sighing' I really don't have a better way of explaining it she keeps doing this. I'm not sure if it's a mutation or she's just wanting more attention. Also, have any of you ever had a Norn 'Crying wolf'?
Edit: P.S; there's nothing wrong with the Norn, no hunger, no illnesses, nothing that I can tell. |

The "death whimper"? I'll hear Norns do that if they're extremely hungry/weak for some reason, but I've never had one do it for no reason (that I noticed).

My one female is doing it for no reason, I checked her hoverdoc and it has the little smiley face (I love that smiley face for some reason). She's well fed and sleeps and plays a good bit, so I really have no idea why she's doing this Except maybe the fact that she might want extra attention, which I don't know if Norns really know what 'attention' is |

Not that I'm aware of. I'm not sure if that's even something they can really do intentionally.

I think they do notice when the hand is gone - if only because nothing else alternately spanks them, heals them, and brings them food quite like we do. Norns can learn to associate the hand with good or bad things - we learned that with Slave ever-so-long ago. I find that my norns that express themselves constantly generally get better care than my stoic silent ones. Why couldn't a norn twig to that?

Real speech is a little different than a death-whimper, though. For instance, you don't see Norns reeling back and gasping in pain as though they've been slapped because they want more attention--only if they're literally hurt by something. Those kinds of behaviors might be too hard-coded to be voluntary per se.

I sent the Norn to my sister through the warp and it's still doing the same thing. Which makes me think it might be a mutation. I was breeding Zebra Norns and Siamese Norns at the time. (Parents just died recently at 5 hours and 39 minutes old) I hatched a random egg and she came out, did the death-whimper, I thought it was dead, but it wasn't. I've never had Creatures doing this before. |

Slave had to learn to trust her new keeper too...
I believe the 'death whimper' is an involuntary action, which means the genome says 'when you are sick, do the sneeze involuntary action', and 'when you're full of progesterone and with egg, do the lay your egg involuntary action' - it could be that the 'when you're cold, shiver' response has been changed to 'when you're cold, do the death rattle'. XD

I had a Vampyre grendel that did the same but she died in a crash. |

I've checked her hoverdoc so many times, she's not cold, sick, hungry, nothing.. I don't think she's had any eggs (at least up to the point she warped from my world and into my sister's world). She might've laid a few eggs then. She's still whimpering in my sisters world. Malkin, you could be right, in the fact that something could have been changed there. But I'm not quite sure what. Maybe it's when she's happy, because that's when she seems to do it the most. |

My norns always do the 'death whimper' when they're bored. They get the bored expression, then sit/lie down, and just sit there going, "Ooough." I'm talking about normal, 1st generation norns. The death sound isn't exclusive to death.
What's really annoying is when they get so bored they forget to eat. They lie down making that sound, complaining of boredom, until I either smack them back into reality, or they croak it.

Maybe it should be called the "sound of despair" instead.

What makes it really sad is that Norns probably can't distinguish between different Hands. She didn't even know she was free from AntiNorn.

AntiNorn was a forum member back on (I think) the official forum, who had a site which was all about (perhaps unsurprisingly) Norn torture. He taught his Norns to call him "God".

Aww I don't think I ever tortured Norns.. I just don't have the heart to . (Is taking care of Grendels considered Norn torture? (I keep them seperated as much as possible, and the Duskies I hatch never bother Norns)). |

Certainly not! After all, Grendels are very little different from the more aggressive Norn breeds, and just as intelligent. Being mean to them is technically "Grendel torture".

Like when I get angry I hatch a banshee and slap it to death while it's a baby. But I don't do that anymore. Now I wait 'till it's at least an adult. Sometimes I train them to be good to my norns.

Grendels are my favorite species in the game, Norns and Ettins are tied for second. While Norns are cute, they're a bit stupid. Ettins are just adorable, but they take everything that they can, and I think carry illnesses. Grendels are really awesome if you have the Grendel/Ettin selection already pressed by a Norn, but they hit your Norns to death if you don't keep them under control. So every species has its own pros and cons. But overall Grendels are my favorite . I think the whimpering Norn either died, or was exported out of my sister's world.. I haven't heard about it recently. |

What i think is weird is that people dislike grendels when they aren't that different from norns (except being more mad).

Personally i don't mind if grendels have equal rights to norns just as long as Ettins are supreme to them all > .
