Foreign Languages

Okay, this isn't a game, its a discussion. In the USA a lot of people are required to take foreign language classes in high school. So I want to know, what languages besides your own have you learned, or try to learn, or want to learn? Do schools in your countries require foreign languages? Just curious, hope this will get some participation! :)

Oh, I took two years of Latin for high school, and I loved it! I plan on taking Spanish when I get to college.

I like Latin. I just can't learn it right now because my Latin books are all in storage! D:

I'd also like to learn Italian. It's a nice language. (It's also very similar to Latin.)

I studied Italian in primary school, as it is sponsored by the Italian government (due to large migrant levels? I don't really know). I can still sing "I have an aunt from Staffoli". I was given a taster term each of Japanese, French and German for a year at high school, and I chose to study French for five more years. (Although I did learn enough German to follow some of REX!) If I had not chosen to study French, I would have still had to have an entire year of a language.

Taken Spanish, taking Latin, kind-of-but-not teaching myself Japanese. Kanji are hard as hell to memorize.

My dad would sometimes teach me individual Latin words - it's a useful language for biology or medicine. :) I don't have to remember that Helianthus is a sunflower, because I know that Helios was a sun god, and that an anther is a stem, and that sunflowers bend their stems to make their flowers follow the sun. :)

By the way, there is this joke, really silly, but it's funny, it's about how foreign countries know multiple languages....
"You're only american, if you only speak one language, and that's english!"

It's mostly a joke that most all americans speak only one language, which is english, and that if you know a second language, and you live in america, it's likely that the language is spanish....

Malkin, latin is great for anything scientific, such as medicine, biology, species names, anatomy, etc.

Haha, my dad tried to get me to take Medical Terminology as an elective, because it would be easy with prior knowledge of Latin!

I speak English. Remember, I am German, so it is foreign for me.

One year I had to learn French at school. It was horrible... You speak nothing as you write it and you write nothing as you speak it. That showed me how easy German and English are.

Haha, when I posted the topic I was thinking, "wait, isn't English Papri's second language?" English has a Germanic structure, right?

Well, they are only a bit similar. You have more complicated times, but we have a stranger grammar. Example:

German: Ich habe den Kuchen gegessen.

English: I have eaten the pie.

So, the same words have the same color. You see the verb-"bracket"? That happens very often and we have even more of that odd stuff.

Lol, yeah. Creatures with different languages are funny. Once a French friend sent me a Norn. I taught it German about 5 times, but till the end of it's life it said Je and not Ich (I/me)... :D
