Dang that really sucks. What programs are you using to try to fix this? Some programs that say they're antivirus software are actually spyware in disguise, and they will tell you you have more problems than you do and then cause problems and steal your privacy while they pretend they're helping! Always use programs that are well-known, like Stopsign, Malwarebytes or Norton.
Also take careful note of any error messages or warnings you get and look them up online because sometimes they actually come from the virus and it tries to convince you to download more fake "antivirus software" which will just make the problem worse. Usually if you type in the error in quotes in a search engine like Google it will bring up results from other people asking about the same thing and you can see what answers they got.
I recommend downloading Malwarebytes, you can use it for free and it's one of the ones I use and it works really well. You can download it from www.malwarebytes.org and it will scan your computer and find any crap you have on there. It's a good place to start. I'd also recommend something like Stopsign too--it isn't free but you can still scan your computer with it and see if it finds anything. It is worth the money. It's always good to scan with more than one program because they both pick up things the other might miss.
Another thing you need to do, at least for now, is cut back on your online time! Some viruses actually make your computer get worse when you connect to the internet, and if you don't know which web site you're getting this crap from, you risk reinfecting yourself or getting more viruses downloaded to you in the mean time.
Try to figure out where you might be getting this stuff from. Have you gone on any sites that seemed suspicious? Can you pinpoint which site orsites you were visiting when this started happening? Avoid sites that give you popups. Safe sites that won't hurt your computer include Creatures Caves, Creaturetopia and Wikipedia. Sites you should avoid include places like porn sites (obviously), sites that let you download torrents, and even Fanfiction.net (the site itself is okay but their ads can contain malicious programming).
Depending on where this report of 2,000 came from, your problem probably isn't as bad as it says it is. I've actually gotten a message that told me that before, but I only had one on my computer--and that one was giving me the error message, not my computer, because it wanted me to download all its "friends"!
Don't ever download a program that your computer "recommends" to you, although looking them up online to see what people say about them is a good idea. Just be cautious, and always use a reputable program like the ones I mentioned above.

My mum's Win2k PC is protected by Avira (or Avaria? always fail to spell it) Anti-Virus- Already the free edition is very "strong".
...Of course there are also other ways than anti-viruses to protect your PC...

Sorry to hear that Arnout. I've had a long history of having to deal with Viruses, but the best thing I recommend is downloading AVG Antivirus and turning off your internet for a while. Also try to steer clear of suspicious websites. |

Holy god what wall of text.
arnout, exactly what or who is telling you that you have "2000 virusses" on your PC.
Backup data and reformat, it's the only way to be sure |

Reformatting may not be necessary though. I had a pretty major virus problem a few months back and a quick sweep-and-destroy took care of it all. Backing up is always a good policy but why go through the trouble to reformat if you don't have to?

Right in the toolbar i see a yellow balloon coming up wich tells me i,ve got 1910 virus things on my PC. And the windows protecting suit is telling me that i,ve got another 475/476/ or 477 virusses.
Thanks for all the tips.
I.m trying Malwarebytes now.
It found only 9 virusses after 55000 files.
But my dad knows a very good program so if nothing works he could help me.

Arnout, I'm sorry to say this, but the yellow thing on the taskbar is FAKE antirus software, and actually does more harm than good. What website were you on when it started saying you were infected with "55000" viruses? |

Arnout

|
9/14/2009 | |
It was,nt injected by 55000, only 2000. And after that the virusscanner told me it where only 780.
I allready thought the balloon thing was fake. It was from the windows security suite, but i still was wondering if that thing could not harm my PC even more! They said it was for free.
Then they said you need to register. And registering is for $80,00.
Happily enough, i did,nt used that security suit. |

Yeah, you have to be pretty careful. Windows Security Suite is definitely malware. Make sure you get rid of it, too, if you haven't already, because it is spyware and can steal passwords and such...

My opinion, and this is based on experience:
RESET
I am sorry to say it, I've had to do it countless times on a certain computer, I had to reset all my data, complete deletion, luckily I didn't have anything valuable. It got to the point, to where reset, wasn't that good of an option, to where, the viruses came back immediately.
Though, now, I use a computer I've used before (Never had to reset it). It may be slow, and kinda annoying, but it gets the job done. I use mozzila fire fox, and whenever it says the computer isn't responding, a few minutes, or seconds, later, it's back to normal!
I use Norton 360, it's great, you need to do maitenance, and other stuff, like clearing internet history, virus checks, it's worth it though.
If you have macfee or something, dump it. We forgot to pay a bit, and instantly, I was swarmed with viruses, advertisements, you know it! I think they did it just so we would pay. So, we switched to norton 360!

Use a free AV, run Spybot every now and then, set windows update to run automatically, keep data on a spare partition, and don't be an idiot on the internet.
I shouldn't have to say this but follow the same logic as you do with scams: "if you have to ask if it's a scam, it's a scam".
nod32 is the best AV I've ever used if you can get your claws on it. |

I know papriko.
I have to say it, but, Wup is right, the thing is, if you get pop ups saying you have viruses, and they're advertisements on your computer, from names you've never heard of before, this is the funny part:
Those ads, ARE THE VIRUSES.
It may say you have 2,000, but, it's unlikely, it's likely, that there could be 20 viruses, but not different. If you have 2,000, then you must have multiple, say, multiple copies of one virus.
Now, the worst thing that can happen, is viruses that won't close till you use CTRL+ALT+DEL.
Then, a virus or multiple viruses, hack your computer, and change the adminastrative thingies. Then, you have viruses that pop up, and when you try to use CTRL+ALT+DEL, you end up getting an error message, saying that it's disabled.
So many viruses appear, that you have multiples of one virus pop ups, and it gets to the point, that if one closes, seconds later, another opens.
The admin controls are then blocked.
THAT is bad, trust me, that is why I had to reset multiple times.

Last time I had a virus, it disabled my chief antivirus program, wrote itself to the registry, and hijacked my web browser so that even DS didn't work and I got redirected every time I tried to go to Wikipedia (it was evil, I tell you).
I had so many popups that I couldn't even close them all down. I had to resort to loading every single page of my friend's fanfic series in Word Processor so that the computer denied them reproductive abilities due to lack of memory (it's a long series).
Needless to say, it really sucked. I still got rid of it all, though, and I didn't have to reset to do it. Although I do have to say, it pays when your mother is a professional programmer...

Yeah.
It pays, but, with me, my grand father, and my father, they've both worked in a company together that dealt with computers a lot.
My dad wasn't able to be over to fix it often enough, so I reset my computer, well, I had help reseting it.
Next time, my dad would spend hours trying to get it to work. He did enough to clean it, but, it still had problems, and if I went onto the internet, it got worse.
That's how I ended up with this computer, after a long series of events.

Lots of websites are trying to "redirect" me to somewhere. Could this be a virus too?

Not always, it just could mean you got to the welcome page, and it is taking you to the actual site (Many sites do it, they have a home page, but there is a welcome page, in which you get re-directed, and if it doesn't happen, there is a link to do it manually!).
