Hello People.
Last Friday my system died. The HDD crashed and took everything with it. Now I installed another OS on this PC and tried to access the broken HDD. Sadly it is not possible to rescue it.

Would everybody, I ever sent something to, give me a copy of it? Thank You Very Much.

If you want any help trying to restore it then do post more details on what happened and what you've tried and I can see if I can help with that side of things.

I feel your pain Papriko - my laptop had a data crash last week. I've had to reboot my entire system just for it to work again ('cause I'm not technically minded) so everything of mine is lost too. Backups, people, always make backups! :(

Well. I umounted (1) my secondary HDD from the main system and then I started to run fsck (2) on it.
While running fsck, the window crashed and I couldn't close it. In that moment I used IceWM (3), so I didn't know where the Task Manager was hidden. I logged out. Then I tried to relog again. It didn't work, so I pushed restart.

There it came: grub (4) loading error 2
I made another partition and installed Debian 4 which fixed grub. The secondary HDD was still fine, just the main HDD was totally broken.

After some experimenting with dd_rescue, fsck and e2fsck it was mountable again, but everything was... lets say messed up. Everything got moved into Lost+Found. There were about 6300 (My File Browser counts the displayed objects) folders and files with names like #23532
With the Thumbnails of the pics I was able to say that those files are mixed from all ends of my old System.

Glossary
(1) Mounting means the connection of a HDD, USB drive or something similar to the local System of the PC. The command to that is mount. umount does the exact opposite. It checks if there is still a data transfer between System and HDD/USB, stops them if needed and disconnects it "soft" from the System.

(2) fsck is a command which repairs little, non-fatal errors in File Systems. Sadly quite useless for a total crash.

(3) a window manager for Linux. On Linux window managers are exchangeable to customize the system. IceWM is simple, fast and easy to use.

(4) When you boot up your system, you get such a text output. grub is on Linux a program which runs in this text mode and starts the OS itself. In case you have more than one OS on your PC, you can also choose in grub which one should be booted.

I think that was simply too much for my HDD. It is now for sure dead. The most of my Creatures Stuff is on the secondary HDD. At the moment I try to get my DS working.
The most of my adoptions, all my pics (both, creatures and non-creatures related, even my avatars!) and much else is lost.

I am already happy when I get at least a bit of those things back.

EDIT: Sorry, was typing the same time as you Laura. I hope for you it ended up a bit happier ^^

So your primary drive became corrupt after an issue on the first drive... Even a reboot crash shouldn't cause damage like that. That must have been infuriating.

Then again I have had some pretty killer problems crop up when grubs gone wrong myself too.

I tend to keep my Linux systems to one OS per machine now (save for virtuals ;)) and use Knoppix and such if I need to repair anything.

Yes, usually I have just one OS per machine, too. The Debian 4 was meant as a rescue system, but became now my new standart OS for this PC ^^
