| How did you discover Creatures | |

So... How did you? (Brace yourself... there's a long story coming)
I actually discovered Creatures when I was... like, 7 or something? We had this Playstation, and my mom bought me a bunch of games; one of them was Creatures. It was more like the original Creatures 1 for the PC, except instead of the hand, you played as a fairy-like thing named Scrubby. Anyway, I absolutely LOVED that game, though I never had more than 8 Norns at a time. And when I got older, I started getting into fanfiction. So I would look around for hours on end at Fanfiction.net... Well, one day, I found a section about 'Creatures.' I thought it would be about the PlayStation game, so I decided to check it out. (I had NO idea that they had a computer game for it.) So imagine my surprise when I found stories about Civet Norns (?), the Shee Ark (??), and Ettins. (?????????) I decided to do some research on the wonderful Google, and guess what I found? Yup; the Gameware site was the first thing that came up. And so then I BEGGED and BEGGED to have Creatures for my birthday, and so I got it! (Creatures Exodus) And guess what?
IT DIDN'T WORK. o_O
The computer I used it on was really, really old, so whenever I tried to go into the bridge, the game froze. So then I had to wait six months until we moved and got a better computer (Vista :3) for the kids to use. Then, it wouldn't let me use Creatures 3 on it, but oddly enough, it lets me use DS docked with C3, which makes NO sense. Still, I'm not complaining! ^_^
So how did you discover it?
Can you touch the stars?
Then you must be an Astro Norn...
My Creatures DS username is the same as this one. PM me if you want to connect! |

C1 came bundled with another game. Ordered C3, saw DS a while later, ordered C2 after that, came here. |

You know, it's funny. I first saw an article about Creatures in a games magazine I was subscribed to. Took one look at a little male Banana Norn that was curled up on the ground in the picture--hadn't learned to distinguish Norn body parts, could only see light and dark and somehow mistook Norn's body for spider legs. Mental image of Norn head on spider body was not appealing. Thought, "Ick! That's one game I'll never play!"
And then two months later my parents bought me Creatures for Christmas. And I realized they didn't have spider bodies after all. And I loved the game. I was already addicted to virtual pet games but, of course, Norns can talk, and their behavior isn't preprogrammed like in other games. I think it was three years later that Creatures 2 came out. And I enjoyed it too, even though my Norns were all rebellious and seemed addicted to drowning themselves--it made exploring Albia a challenge, at least. And then there was Creatures 3, of course.

As a birthday present, I received Creatures when I was only two years old. I had to pilot my mom through the game because I couldn't control a mouse back then. After a long time, though, I got good at using the mouse and I was playing the game on my own.
Ever since then, I've gathered all the games of this series I could find and I still occasionally play them. It has become less and less frequent, though, since I am slowly moving on to other games.
...And the last part, sadly, is still true. D: I posted that in early May, and I haven't played Creatures since... February? I don't know. x_x

Bwa.. I love threads like this. Maybe because I find my story so quirky, I dunno.
I was actually into the Petz games as a kid, and even into what was known as "Petz Fighting," where... well, the petz would fight in matches and so on. It was a subject of controversy among the mostly pre-teen community who believed we were horrible people for making our virtual creatures fight each other. Granted, the "fighter" subsection of the community wasn't exactly thrilled by their exclusion from the rest of the community, and tried to justify their actions. So one day I was browsing one of my favorite fighting sites and there was an announcement, "To all Anti-Petz Fighters!" It contained a link to AntiNorn's infamous site with the tagline, "At least we're not as cruel as this guy!"
And I was actually intrigued by the site and did some searching for creatures and found links to similar sites like The Creatures Match and The Abyss (I think it was called). I was enthralled and saved my allowance money to buy Creatures 2 (which I believe had just come out at the time). And that's how it all began.
So I actually got into Creatures because I was interested in fighting them, but I was so fascinated by the complexity of the game that I spent a lot of time playing it "normally" as well as trying a lot of weird psychological experiments. Then I got C3 when it came out.. and Docking Station.. and bought every single one of the norn packs, haha I was obsessed.
I later went back and bought the Creatures Albian Years bundle just so I could have Creatures 1 and import the infamous mascot "Slave" that started all this :3

Aquazone! You too? Did you get the version with the 3d (well, 3d as much as Myst is) store you could wander around in? I wanted some of that stuff so badddd
And petz 5? Pshawwww, back in the day they handed us real soldiers a rifle and copy of petz 2. |

Sigh, I always wanted Aquazone... but my parents didn't think it was worth the money, they thought Petz and Creatures should be "enough" and refused to buy me (or even let me buy for myself) anything else that was virtual pet oriented. I still don't have it. D:

Ahah I remember Aquazone. I had it but my fish always died and would never breed and I thought it was stupid how you had to actually buy new fish online. Like one file only contained so many fish and once they were gone, that was it. (There's ways to get around that by now I'm sure...)
But I would fill up the tank and set the time to 0 and use it as a really peaceful screensaver.
I still play petz sometimes too! Though I use Petz 4 because what's left of the community tends to avoid P5 like the plague.. so if you want to adopt from anyone or adopt out you need to use P4 to be compatible.
But even in the petz community, very few people actually play petz anymore, they just hex stuff to trade with each other. It's no fun
I reckon a lot of us CC'er have roots in other virtual pet games. Heck I even have a sizable collection of tamagotchi and other such toys in my closet. It runs in my blood!

Nope, the good old 2d one. I'm obsessed with the Denden Mekamushis. Y'know, Mekasia?
Petz 2 kicks ass. I haven't touched P5 in months, since I got P2 and 4 that's all I've played.

Petz 5 is okay. There are patches now so you don't have to try to win all the objects, and some people are making breeds that are compatible with more than one game... so the same file works in Petz 3, 4 or 5. There are still some things I take issue with, though... like the fact that when you put the hairball in the carry case, it becomes a replenishable item. <.<; Who thought that would be a good idea??

i always thought aquazone seemed awesome, but couldn't find out if it was more like creatures or more like a screensaver, and i didn't want to buy it just to find out.
ghosthande; when did you see Creatures in a magazine? it may have been the VERY SAME MAGAZINE that started my creatures journey...

Waitwaitwait, the PS3 isn't already backwards compatible? Why don't you just buy a used PS2?
I don't have an interesting discovery story. Someone bought my family Creatures (one of the later versions; it came pre-packaged with the Purple Mountain Norns) as a Christmas present in '97 and I've been a fan since I first installed it.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Well, I thank Ponio that I found Creatures. She's the one who told me about it, I only downloaded Docking Station at first.
I lost interest, and then, while I was looking in PCworld for a new Keyboard for my computer, I saw it - CREATURES: TRIPLE PACK - It's so awesome, because it has a lot of games at once, and it was
!!!!!!!! - £5.00 - !!!!!!!!!
I would have bought it even if it was £100.00.

I happened to discover Creatures several years ago, I don't remember how many exactly but I think it was something like in 1998. It was part of a Video Game magazine as a "Free Bonus Game" in a CD so I just gave it a try. I was totaly stunned by the possibilities. It was not just a "Nicely made Tamagoshi-like game" but something deeper which included a real control over life itself. The game also had a real feeling inside, some kind of incredible atmosphere at the same time full of nostalgia and fantasy. The game kept me on my keyboard for months. However I had the most difficulties to grab Creatures 2 and Creatures 3 when they were released in France so for several years I was severed from the games until finally I could get a Creatures 2 copy and make it run on a old Windows Millenium Computer and then again the good old thrills I felt when I first played the game came back. I added definitively Creatures in my games when I heard about Albian Years and Exodus. Since they were not released in France, I imported them straight from U.K and since then I have discovered that masterpiece nammed Creatures 3.
That's all the story. But I can say I have a real feeling for the whole saga. It's been one of the few game expriment which made me think, "it's more than a game, it's much more than some great game".

I first got c3 at this old warehouse-type place that sold old used books, carpets, cds, clothes, etc. I got an unopened box and the volcano on the back made me want it (i guess this is where my love of ettins begins). I played for a while before stumbling across the online prescence, and it took even longger to find the community. I lurked for a while after that, and eventually dabbled in programming, bu quit. i got c1 and 2 and got hooked on 2 as well. after several computer crashes i got ds and lost all others, and got really involved. then i lost that too, and got c3 back, then lost it in a move, and now here i am with nothing. but im thinking about c2 agan...

Aquazone and Petz are what got me to notice virtual life games. Then in 1997 when I was a little kid I was at the mall with my aunt and we were looking around EB. I saw Creatures, thought it looked neat and she bought it for me.
I transferred my very first C1 world from computer to computer over the years. I still have it on an old computer that's collecting dust in my mother's basement. I don't even know if that computer functions anymore, but if it does my original flock of C1 norns are still on there. |

Well, I got Creatures Adventures, and then Creatures Playground. I decided to get Creatures 3 when I was around nine. And Creatures 2. I downloaded Docking Station as soon as my mom bought an internet connection.
I still play them, even though I nowadays find cyborgs more interesting than something 100% organic (or 100% mechanical.) If C4 ever introduced something where you could experiment on your creatures with cybernetics, I would be incredibly happy, but it looks like it will never happen...oh, well.

re: giratinagirl: Huh, experimenting on creatures like that sounds sorta interesting, but I'm not sure what the difference between a simulated organic creature and a simulated cyborg is.
I remember my dad showing my brother and I an add for Creatures 2 which he'd found interesting; it talked about how you take care of them and they can mutate and stuff and I thought it was interesting, though mysterious. I'd never seen a virtual pet game and had some vague idea that this would be vaguely like chess but with evolving, living pieces. Then a little while later we were in possession of the game, and I remember reading the box and thinking it would be about building little towns with Norn families (because of the ettin treehouse pictures on the back). Then finally we played it and it was great and the two of us spent years raising Norns and downloading cobs and learning to hexedit files and make cobs. I know it was in 5th grade I started playing, so it must have been when I was ten.
A while later we found a combined C1/C2 pack in a warehouse store but it never installed right, and I've basically been without a working Creatures installation from when I was fifteen or so until I found about the gog.com version last week! C2 is still my favorite ... I guess opinions vary widely on the matter of which is best though eh? |

I saw Creatures Adventures in Toys R Us. Mom figured it would be too young for me (I was 13 or so then) but I begged until she gave in and got it. It *was* too kiddy for me, but still really fun, and I soon discovered that there were other games in the same series. I got DS and played it obsessively, and then my Dad got me Creatures Deluxe (C1, C2 and C3 packaged together) and I was delighted.
I lost interest after awhile (right around when the game series started dying - CL was bankrupt and Gameware was just keeping things running and nothing more). Just recently my Biology 100 class sparked my interest again, all that mention of ATP and ADP and such made me think of norns again.
Incidentally, regarding which one's my favorite, it's a tie between C1 and DS. Both have really cute norns (I think C2 norns are ugly). I mostly raise a family in C1 and experiment in DS.
By the way, I don't care if anyone steals my ideas for their own work, as long as you don't try to stop me from making my own stuff. Many ideas I mention are things I don't have the time or skill to actually do. |
