edit again: removed list, its outdated now! also changed formatting

EDIT: Hey can anyone add me to creaturetopia forums? I registered but i have not been approved. Or if someone can post this over there too that would be the best! I think it is other active forum? Is there anymore active forum besides this, that, and Grove?

Hai so I love this game a lot. It is awesome.

I just got it and reinstalled after years of not playing, and I am very happy.

Howerver, I found it very hard to find all the custom content, so many dead pages, so many broken things.

I want to make it easier to someone new or someone reinstalling.

Also it is not practical for someone installing cc to have to download 100's of SMALL zip files so it is MUCH more practical to use technology and make them into a pack.

With a torrent, you can actually click and choose which files yo uwant or don't before you download..

so even if this is a 700meg pack (or more!!) you don't have to get it all. even if you want one file, you can.

So I made a megapack! I downloaded everything I could see, pruned it for broken files or missing files or ugly files, and now I need help.

I also downloaded all of the official files like patches, tools and breeds but not all those are listed here just know that I have them..

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!1

YAY CREATURES!!!!

You cannot add Ostrova and NG2 to your torrent as you have to pay for these and you would be in breach of copyright.
You also can't add the nornpacks Treehugger, Hardman etc as these are copyright and currently unavailable.
Also I hope you have checked with the creators of these agents, breeds, etc before you post their work on the internet.

I hope you consider what I have said before you go infringe copyright and peoples wishes.

Ghosthande please back me up on this!

Okay.

Maybe not Norngarden or the ostrova one, because you can still buy them from a store. I don't have those anyway lol like i said.

HOWEVER.

I'm sorry but the official norn packs are simply not available anymore. they never will be again. if someone comes out with creatures 4 (lolol as we all know isn't happening) then i will remove them from the download!!!

until that time, there is no way to purchase or otherwise aquire them, and so, i share. i share for the love of creatures.

if you don't want the official norns in the pack you can "uncheck" them in utorrent so that they don't download.

everything else, also, is free, and should be distributed.

please don't let bigoted thoughts turn these cherished files into dust.

do you really think the creators of CC, as well as the creators of the game and the true visionaries of this community.. do they want their work to die? to fade into oblivion?

i have been a fan of this game since the day it came out and i'm sure as possible that i don't want that.

no one wants that.

im keeping norns alive

edit: ohhhhhhh you're still a youngin' says your profile. makes sense. well, sometimes you gotta break the rules a little do you don't lose something you really love. :)

I know what you are intending is goodhearted and in an ideal world I would support you in doing this but the fact of the matter is that wheter the nornpacks are available or not they are protected by international copright laws and it is illegal for you to distribute the without the owner in this case Gameware Developments permission.

I'm sorry but I can't support this. Clabs has clearly stated that the norn packs are not to be freely distributed, despite the mall being down. Not only is distributing them illegal, it's disrespectful toward Clabs wishes, and if we ever want to see further developments in the Creatures series, the least we can do is show support and respect for its creators.

It might also be worthwhile adding a text file noting where you downloaded each file from and when, so that if an update is posted or it's unclear who wrote what, people know where to go.

It might be worthwhile emailing the creator of NG4 and seeing if the give-to-get is still on. I imagiine that if it is, NG4 could not be included in the download.

Interesting idea, and I like your enthusiasm Ashkitty, but a torrent is hardly an ideal form of preservation. It's great now, and maybe for the next couple of months or however long people share it for, but after that the files are gone again.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't bother, I'm just curious to hear how you might overcome a hurdle like this.

Ashkitty

Ashkitty

  6/22/2009

Actually 3kul, since I am online constantly and my computer is almost never off, I planned to just seed as much as possible, reuploading and reseeding every now and then when I open my torrent program. It isn't a hassle for me to seed things over a long period of time.

Also I would hope that other hardcore fans would get the whole pack and seed every now and then.

I also preserved the file structure in such a way that it would be relatively easy to bulk upload onto a web server or something if anyone has space to do so.

And yes Malkin I will put a text file explaining a good chunk of things (I already wrote one to inform of existing updated creatures sites like here and the wiki, as well as a huuuuge help file on installation and general tech maintenance)

The bulk of the who-did-what explaining will mostly be kept in check by preserving original readmes.

But considering that my downloads-only (no install files or original agents, etc) file count is currently 1,585 and totaling 846 megs, obviously, not every single little thing can be accounted for. but most!

I saw several of the things I created on that list.

I do NOT want you redistributing my work.

I have several reasons but the most practical one is that I frequently update my old agents and rooms as I learn more. I have them hosted on one site (Bibbleworld) that has been around for a long time, and (I believe) will continue to be around.

You can find a list of my creations on the wiki, please remove mine.

Personally I don't do torrents (I'm on a shared connection and it tends to eat everyone else's bandwidth) but so long as it stays within legal boundaries I'll admire any attempt to archive old creations :)

But like others have said, please, please make sure you have at least made an effort get permission from the creators before you include their agents. It's one thing if the creators are missing from the CC entirely but it's quite another if the original sites hosting the agents are still up. Again, it's just a matter of respect for the people that put their time and effort into creating these things.

I agree with others that a torrent is likely a rather temporary way of preservation, especially when you start thinking years into the future, but it's not altogether a bad one-- once several people get a hold of it, especially those who will be around for years to come, it probably won't ever completely disappear again, especially with everyone being so wary about preserving old stuff these days.

I quoted this because it's pretty much how I feel about it.

I mean, really, in the scheme of things, any digital media is really short lasting.

clohse: um, I guess i'll remove your stuff...

Nope. I won't be able to keep this up for ever and ever until the end of time. No single person can do that. No one can continuously afford, keep up, and tend to webspace for it, either. Forever, that is.

But seeing as how I'm a no-good bum with no job, no college prospects, and pretty much no life, it'll be easier for me than some to just.. keep on truckin. :P

also: the torrent is almost done being compiled, i just have to search for duplicates and make sure all the really important stuff is there, like updates, patches, so on.

*checks list*

*does a double-take*

While I don't mind my only agent being distributed (with credit) by other people, and I'm flattered that it's been included in that list, for future reference I'd appreciate some sort of notice beforehand. ;)

And, as has already been said, it's bad juju in general to redistribute agents without asking the original creator [or attempting to].

even if you estimate around the number of CC folk listed on the wiki.. actually that seems like MOAR.

so anyway, if someone else wants to learn how to mass-mail and fetch all those email address...

then i am totally all for it! lul

edited to add:

oh, and trust me. it's not like i don't know exactly why you guys have these opinions. i mod the sims myself, and also, i am an artist. while i would *prefer* that someone email me first, when i do find someone's showing off my mod or art -- with credit -- then i feel a little bit of glee.

like "i'm glad they found that useful!"

or "ooo they like that picture! that's really neat! maybe i'll draw more [things like that] sometime"

or "wow i didn't know this is so popular!"

i think these feelings for me, and probably most people, outweigh anything negative from being shared. after all.. the whole point of releasing them into the internet wilds in the first place was - sharing.

Are you serious?

I know how frustrating it can be to try to get a hold of a difficult-to-obtain item (largely thanks to The Sims Community), but I think you're taking things a few steps too far. It is one thing to archive a download without the creator's permission because you've exhausted all other options and cannot locate them, but it's quite another to throw a pile of downloads onto a torrent site behind the creators' backs because you're too lazy to ask for permission. If you aren't willing to spend the effort seeking permission from the creators, then I don't think you should be offering this download.

Also, for anyone still pissed at me about the breed packs...

Agreed. Especially seeing as you are a Sims artist, you should be able to grasp the fact that you need to ask first. If you can't even be bothered to do what you rightfully should have done in the first place, you probably shouldn't bother uploading the torrent at all.

Doing so may seem totally justified to you but I think what Clohse said earlier is a good illustration that your personal viewpoint does not justify what you do with other peoples' creations. Especially when those people are still around. The fact that you intended to include the Norn Packs, Ostrova and Clohse and Aquashee's agents really makes me wonder. Did you even bother checking the creators' policies, or can you just not be bothered?

First off, I recommend that, if you have any of my stuff included in the torrent at all, that you remove it. At the moment, all of my stuff is available either from the Norn Adoption Center or Seeyou7.net. Marienn is still alive (I've talked to her recently), and does an excellent job at keeping her website running. Not certain if I can say the same for Alien, but the Norn Adoption Center is also still up and running.

If my stuff wasn't available elsewhere, then it'd be a different story.

As for the idea itself.... A torrent isn't a particularly bad idea, but like other people have already stated you can't keep it going forever. Regardless of what your job prospects are, since I'd imagine you'd lose your house and most of your possessions before too long if you're seriously in that position. Unless, of course, you're still under parental care, which your typing skills suggest you are....

That, and there's the issue of morals, which again has already been explained.

My overall opinion: If you're seriously lazy enough to not even bother e-mailing the original creators before hosting their stuff/packing it into a massive torrent, even if they're not still around, then I suggest you give it up. Otherwise, you might be in trouble up to your neck.

I just want to chime in and say that if you're going to do something quite illegal and rather immoral you shouldn't advertise it nor laugh about it. No one can physically prevent you from putting it up unless you are reported, really. And if you go ahead and put up the torrent, those people that know how to use it and are in need of these items will find you anyway. But announcing it in a public forum is going to seriously piss off some people, in fact it already has. In theory its a nice thing to do, to provide all these items in one place. But you really have to respect the creators, and oblige to take down their items when they insist on it. "I guess" is not an acceptable answer. also your condescending attitude to other users is noted and not appreciated, please respect what others are saying to you.

Yes, I'm the forum [devil]... Any questions?

*removed clohse's stuff. (did that as soon as she asked and noted it, actually, "angel".
*removed grendelman's stuff.

*For those of you without the attention span or will to read through this, there is an informative, short conclusion at the bottom.

I am honestly, tremendously amazed at the smear campaign that is going on and directed solely at me. I have been surprised since the first trickles of negatively, which has in time grown to astonishment at just how large this pitchfork mob is becoming. I am thankful today that I am not a straw man.

To start this discussion with a bang, I would like to display for example, Lacota. Now, obviously, I have not been part of the "in crowd" for many years, and I do not know who this person is. The wiki tells me that this person, Chris apparently, was a c1tods modder. Not a hugely prolific modder, but a quality one to have. I applaud and appreciate his work.

Not once did you question him in his Call for Help -- "Are you including readmes?" "Are you emailing everybody?" Hell, there were even offers to send him the store breeds! Wow.

Why is his case different from mine? Because he is a modder, because he has "rep" in this community, and because he is putting it on a web space as opposed to a torrent format. This elevates him in the eyes of the community to the level of "trusted." You do not feel the need to talk about readme, contact and other inclusion because you automatically assume -- as he is "trusted" -- that he is going to do these things.

I do not speak for him, his actions or his status, but, in reality, none of you have any idea EXACTLY what he's up to regarding sensitive issues; no one does but him. I do not doubt that he is doing the right thing, but the difference needed to be explained.

On the other hand, you have me. I am, to you, a name with no icon, a newbie, an idiot, a scavenger and a stranger. I am not trusted -- I am suspicious and to be wary of. I understand this. When a new member traipses into one of my "home" forums proclaiming change and movement and "for the good of the community," I too, scoff and smirk to myself, soothing bristling hairs. What is this little newbie doing, this fellow without cred (or morals, apparently)? They cannot change the world.

The Creatures games forums are particularly susceptible to this hive mentality, which in and of itself is a neutral thing -- the hive euphoria over a new mod can keep the project going to completion, while in reverse, the combined disapproval and scorn can shame a lesser dedicated person to giving up completely or pitching a forum fit. (I hear Bug got chased out by something like this, and I quite understand her sentiment.)

In regards to copyright: I firmly believe that this is fair use. Wikipedia's page has a lot to say on the subject of fair use, much of it difficult to wrap one's head around (as the details of copyright law usually are for anyone, save specialty lawyers.) I almost don't want to bring this point up, because of the crapfest it will entail, but seeing how firmly I believe in it I can not omit it and still do justice to my opinions.

Before I get into the meat of things, you need to understand, process and accept this fact: Copyright law in direct relation of video game mods is unclear, undefined, and ultimately decided only by the process of court. There are no written laws specifically regarding this that are easily available. Rather, what little legal agreement there is on the subject is documented and repeated from court cases on the subject.

Quick disclaimer no one cares about: I am not a lawyer, I only play one on TV.

This is taken directly from http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html:

Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes

- Obviously, since I have not included anything official or unusual (ie, NG2/4/Ost) this is completely nonprofit. I would actually characterize this as "educational purpose," if only because there is not an archive or preservation issue listed specifically.

2. The nature of the copyrighted work

- Mods by the community for a video game, whose intellectual property copyright belongs [currently] to Gameware Development.

3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole.

- This can be expounded on in a number of ways:
1. The whole of the CC, including games and CC content. This would, doubtlessly, be illegal to distribute.
2. The whole of the CC. It is not so clear.
3. The "whole" of a single modder's mods; ie, ALL of slink's things, for example. It is not so clear.
4. The "whole" of a single mod. For example, a breed would include sprites, body data, genetics, and anything else directly involved in producing that breed on your screen. It's not so clear.

The reasons these aren't so clear: The Creatures sprites, code, engine, and so forth were all created by CL. The overwhelming copyright here belongs to Gameware Development. When you use some code, and/or some sprite, and/or the engine itself, and/or the names "norn, grendel and ettin", your work becomes, from what I understand, technically classified by law as either "fair use" or "a derivative work".

4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
- Modded Creatures content is, for the vast majority, free. Therefore this does not affect cash value. Theoretically, making this widely available my even raise market value for the games themselves. You may argue that it affects "value" in a more general and/or emotional way, but it does not.

Again, to summarize my important copyright point: There is not a set, defining law governing the creation, usage, and redistribution of mods created by fans for video games. The only solid truth in this matter is that Gameware Development, weather partially or entirely, owns the copyright of all Creatures games. As it stands, modder's work is either a "parody," a "derivative work" or, possibly, a copyright infringement within itself. The last important thing to note on this subject is thus: even if you do have permission directly from the mouth of GWD's CEO, a mod will still be either parody or derivative since it inevitably includes creatures game files in some way.

No one is probably reading this far, but I'm still not done. :)

In regards to contacting the creators before distribution: I CONCEEDE AND AGREE TO THIS. Yes, this is the proper way for things to be done. Yes, this is the proper way to cover your ass when you are in a situation like mine.

What I was expressing in my previous post was my dismay at the idea of how daunting that task would be. I do not know how one would reliably contact every single author. A functional method would have been to get emails every time I downloaded a mod -- sadly, as an oversight, I did not do this. That said, the collection of emails after the fact is an extremely discouraging task of monumental proportion, to me. The last thing I want to do, for the several weeks it would take, is re-vist every single site I went to in my collection run. I just don't think I can, primarily because I scoured the web insanely thoroughly the first time and the dead links were, again, a mire.

Yet, when I complete this email list, and email an announcement/request out to everyone, does the community dictate furthermore the amount of time I would have to wait after sending? To clarify, how many responses would I have to receive to consider the pack a "positive go ahead"?

Did anyone even THINK of this? Half the emails are probably dead ones. Of the remainder, a fourth are probably alternates and not up to date; another fourth may want me to remove the mod, and the last remaining half may be positive. But if I sent 1000 emails and only get 100 back, what do I do? Wait a month, a year? No one has ever answered this question. Considering that most of you who have beef is attuned to the fact that you/creator wouldn't get an email BEFORE the fact, and reply your positive BEFORE the fact (as opposed to just getting an announcement and going from there), you can see why this is a problem. To get a response from everyone could very well take a month or ten in this state of decay. Just how long was it until the CEO responded, and he owns the entire game property? Think on that, please.

I was never and am not opposed to this idea of mass-email, as I did make clear in my post. I simply don't have the technology available to easily do it, and the logistics of the reply-wait have already been discussed. For what it's worth, I am currently compiling emails from the wiki, starting with the most popular modders and ending likely when finding emails gets so obscure that I can't take it anymore.

Again, THAT SAID: I believe it is legally acceptable for me to distribute this content with the obviously enclosed notice that I will remove any content should the creator wish me so. Many sites have this policy, YouTube being the main example that comes to mind. If you have made, or might be the person who has made, the content, and contact YouTube to remove it, they will do so immediately; so will I.

My further observation is that over time, this community has undoubtedly grown smaller and tighter. With this territory, the cliquish, or "hive" mind mentality I have referred to other, has increased at a steady pace. It happens to all communities that go through a decline in popularity over time, which weeds out all but the most "hardcore" fans -- who, incidentally, are the most passionate about the subject. You really need to look at how you're feeling and try to disengage from it and see things logically: Should we share as much content as possible, under policy of removal-when-asked, to keep the spirit of Creatures, sharing and CC alive; or, should we enclose our content, keep it on separated sites for individual and small groups of modders, risking the chance that elevates every day that these sites could be lost to time forever? Computer hdds crash; webserver hdds crash. While information recovery technology has improved, it is still relatively expensive and a time consuming option that, more often than not, is foregone. Just try to separate favoritism or "ownership" factors from logical decisions.

CONCLUSION: I am not trying to hurt anybody, I am trying to help everybody. Please respect my intent. Copyright law is not detailed on this matter, but I have done what I can to be reasonable about things. Emailing the hundreds of creators is a valid, morally proper idea that may or may not work in actual life. Regardless of the outcome of this or any forum thread I will still be distributing the content. I am not gloating nor apologizing about this fact. Even though I'm aware I'm speaking to a -mostly- younger audience, lets please think on this like reasonable adults. (I'm twenty-three, for those of you who assume otherwise.)

I feel I might as well rename this to the "CC Pack Removal Request" thread, because I know exactly what's going to happen after everyone reads this; I just have no idea why people let stubbornness control the fate of a dying art form.

Posting because my name was mentioned.

Readme's are included. Emails sent to those who are contactable. Warnings added for those who aren't. Contact info for things to be removed.

Just going to say this.

I personally don't get the need to 'protect' one's assets so strictly in the CC. I don't scream at people to remove C12DS do I?

For those of you out there hesitant to submit to my archive, I ask you for your help. Without your content, there is no archive.

To make it clear, Ashkitty, and any other future willing soul may host/distribute C12DS under TWO conditions

1) People don't pay for it
2) The mod and readme stay intact and are distributed together.

The whole trusted thing:

Okay, I have a few issues with this. I worked hard to become a trusted member of the CC. It wasn't gifted to me because I'm hosting a website. I've talked to many of these people for years, many of them I chat with on MSN or Sine to this day.

I hate to tell you this, but C12DS was the largest project of it's time and if not the largest to date. It's not some little gene mod or toy agent (Not that those aren't an accomplishment either! Without the toys what would norns play with?).

Ashkitty, as to build trust with you, and with the rest of the community, feel free to contact me any time at my email, which is up to date and accurate: lacota AT gmail DOT com. I've updated my profile with the new address, and added my MSN.

I check it several times daily.

Yours Truly,

"Apparently" Christopher Montgomery

P.S. I giggle every time i see that wiki page :)
Edit: I sold my soul to the devil for a new sole on my shoe. (edit for spelling).

Thank you Lacota for your support!

As you had to say, I would like myself to say, that I did not intend to belittle your work, or the work of the whole C12DS team. That mod is amazing, a no doubt absolutely monumental effort on the parts of all involved, and it's existance is a treasure to be held high in the ranks of metarooms (and all other agents related, of course :)).

It is almost, because of it's scale and effectiveness, and expansion in and of itself. I for one was excited, nay, giddy at the experience of having my norns "in c1" again.

Thank you for that!

Also, in related vein, I also did not intend to belittle your overall contribution in explaining my perception of "trusted" stats -- I am but a newb, really, and the wiki page was sparse. You no doubt earned your trust.

Thank you for the contact invitation, I shall be emailing you in soon time.

A side note, if you've not gotten an email, it's probably because i've not gotten to your agents yet. started with the more obscure stuff on Geocities first.

Edit: Does anyone have a way of getting a hold of moe? I'd like to talk to him about the Canopy.

I'm surprised you feel the need to make such an outburst complete with finger-pointing when you actually are at fault. Oh well, greater flamewars have taken place amongst the Sonic community in regards to "fair use" of fanart (and are still smouldering).

The fact of the matter is that not everybody follows Fair Use. Hence why Wikipedia has such strict rules for image upload--fair use is only really helpful if the person offering the content is willing to let it be used under those conditions. "Fair Use" is not an all-encompassing blanket term to OK whatever a person wants to do. I have seen images removed after the original artist saw that their work had been effectively stolen, because no matter the medium or what their image depicted, the artist did not support fair use. It is the creator's right to determine how and if their creations are used and distributed, and whether that falls under Fair Use or not. As with stealing fanart, even if "the law" does not have anything specific against it, human morality and common sense do. A lawyer probably won't show up at your doorstep, but you'll probably have just a few creators ravening for your blood, and a few more who will dislike you simply out of principle.

Now, I have seen most, if not all of these agents, still offered on stable web sites. They may disappear some day, making preservation a necessity, but right now they haven't. The sense of urgency you say accounts for disregarding the creators' wishes, does not exist. And in most cases this means that it shouldn't be too difficult to contact the authors. If you still have the readme's you probably have answers for several of the agents already.

If you are willing to contact the creators, I'm sure someone would be willing to help you locate the more difficult-to-reach people, and/or split up the work to get it done faster. But no one is going to do all your work for you just because you don't want to do it.

And Lacota, I see Moe on CreatureTopia. Occasionally. Think maybe once a month. If you PM him there he may get back to you in a month or two.
