United States

For those who are in the US or simply interested, what do you think about each of the Democratic candidates? Are you a hardcore Trump fan, or will you vote for any Democratic nominee to get him out of office? If you aren't a trump fan, are there any Dem nominees you would vote for Trump over?
Please don't use insults or personal attacks against anyone, I'm just interested in your points of view.

I'm warning everyone now that any personal attacks will result in disciplinary action. Politics is a sensitive topic, so please keep things civil! This is a friendly community, and I trust we all can if we try. :)

Edit: Please also avoid in-depth discussion of controversial election issues (immigration, gun control etc.).

What I find interesting about the American system is that you directly vote for the President - even if that means the opposition has to put up a number of candidates as we're seeing now.

I'd like to see election day being a public holiday so that people can go and vote freely. Over here, it's always on a Saturday to make it as easy for people to go vote as possible.

I'm personally a leftist. I believe in equal rights, healthcare for all no matter what, and affordable college. As someone who is Jewish and queer, I feel like I'm obligated too help others and be there for others. With all that being said, I'm voting for Bernie. I feel like he is the most likable candidate and hopefully he'll win. I like his plans and he's for the people I believe. This election is heated, but not as heated as the 2016 election. It's interesting to see how the election is unfolding and how much of a neck and neck race for the democrats. I think the nominee for the republicans will be pretty obvious.

Yes, but an important thing to remember is that the president is not elected directly by the citizens, but by their representatives (the electoral college), hence us being a "Democratic Republic." I agree that election day should be on, you know, a day in the weekend, lol.

I know. We need a reform of the government and voting system.

What would you reform about the American system, if you could?

The whole two party system is not exactly the greatest. Democrats and Republicans are such wide umbrellas that try to fit a large demographic. If your views don't really line up with the current agenda of either, there is little you can do.
Now I heard there are more parties you could hypothetically vote for, but they are so miniscule that instead of voting for them you might as well not go at all. I imagine that extremely frustrating.

With e.g. a parliament, decisions may take longer, but at least smaller parties get a fighting chance and can perhaps establish properly. 20 years or so ago, the green party in Germany for example was viewed as hardly more than a joke or a bunch of hippies. Nowadays they are an absolutely viable option. They probably won't have a chancellor anytime soon, but they can definitely steer the direction of new laws to some degree.

I certainly don't see that happen in the current structure of the US government. You pretty much have to vote one of the two big players.
