I recently tried to install Albian Years on my friend's new laptop so I could play at her house and possibly get her interested in the games too. Creatures 1 appeared to work (I didn't get any further than hatching a norn), but the hand wouldn't show up on screen in Creatures 2. The mouse pointer would show up at the top of the screen where the applet buttons are, but when I moused over the world it was invisible (I could still pick things up but it was hard to know where I was). Anyone know how to fix that?
I didn't try Exodus but I thought about it. Any idea if it works/needs fixes?
I'm talking about the GOG versions of the games here, by the way. I have the original discs for 1, 2, 3 and Exodus as well but I feared those wouldn't work at all (well, Exodus maybe).
On a side note, is there any way to mute the sounds in C1 and/or C2? I saw you can turn off the C2 music but couldn't find anything else. |

I've put Exodus on my sister's Windows 8 laptop and it works great. The thing I did to get it working is I went into Properties, went to Compatability Mode, and set it to run compatability for Windows XP and to run on 16-bit color. It works wonderfully, but it doesn't like full screen so she has to keep it windowed.

There are a few topics sprinkled throughout the community regarding Windows 8 and Creatures. There doesn't seem to be a reliable solution, although Creatures 2 is the game that typically doesn't work. You might want to check out this post, but it's more of a discussion than an actual solution.
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any ways to mute the sounds in C1 and C2. Apart from turning off your sound completely, those background noises and Norn/Grendel/Ettin voices are there to stay as their own unique symphony!

Good to know, DarbyDoo! Hopefully it'll work smoothly if I decide to try Exodus on my friend's laptop.
Thanks for linking to that topic, Jessica. I guess I could try the weird dragging the window around thing. The black box appeared for me as well, but opening another window or putting the computer to sleep and waking it took it away but broke the hand.
My reasoning for turning the sound off was so I could listen to my own music and such instead of the game sounds haha. I figured there was no way, but I thought I'd be sure before I gave up. |

I'm amazed you got it to run at all without a Direct Draw error. |

I tried dragging the window and changing compatibility modes to no avail. I gave up and uninstalled both C1 and C2 (since the uninstaller wouldn't let me keep C1, oh well). I'm about to install Exodus, wish me luck! |

I can't help you with the compatibility but if you decide to try C1 and C2 again, you can mute the game sounds by right clicking on the speaker icon at the bottom right corner of your screen and choosing "Mixer". You'll be able to adjust the volume of individual programs.

It's possible to selectively turn off sound in windows seven. You simply find the volume button in the right-hand lower corner, click it, and then go to the 'Mixer' which should be at the bottom of the little menu that comes up. It brings up a list of all the programs you have running that use sound. The rest should be self explanatory. I don't see why it shouldn't apply to windows 8. |
