How to thin a population?

I was running a wolfling run and the population balooned to the point where my system doesn't have enough memory to open the world anymore, hah. I figure this one is lost, but what's a good way to keep the population under reasonable control without the obvious solution of a limit? I find that unnatural and counterintuitive when breeding for surviveable genes. I thought of the Macrobacteria, how do those work? Do they effect every creature regardless of Toxic genes? If they do I suppose they could be used to promote immunity related genes...

The Macrobacteria would select for Toxic genes, yes. Do you mind the idea of potentially having super-resistant norns? I've used the Bubonic Bugle hooked up to a Timer myself. You could also introduce a violent grendel population into your game?

hmm, I think setting the limit would be really the best. it is mainly made to prevent such things.

but if you do not like it...

Macrobacterias work on all creatures.
and Malkin is right: bubonic bugle and grendels are also good norn killers
or when the norns live in the norn meso you could use the Toxic replacement agents (toxic tuba, toxic carrots, etc...)

maybe you have some immortal norns? then could use JayD`s The Reaper or TreeSprite`s The Reaper DS

or you look by your own. tthere are tons of ways to kill norns...

I thought I had enough. Evidently not! Mind you this was a very sudden, MASSIVE population explosion... I wonder if I could Readyboost a 2GB flashdrive and open it... >__>;;

And I don't really mind what it is I end up with at this stage, just something that will effectively kill off a good portion of them. It's insane. D:

Haha, I have this exact problem-- I don't like to set a population limit either.

Since the explosion came on so suddenly, I would agree with Papriko-- make sure you don't have any fast-aging immortals by using one of those agents. Those things tend to take over a run like piranhas take over the aquarium.

If you just want to kill random norns though, you could just export a few favorites and use CAOS to kill the rest of the norns in the world.

As far as keeping the population down in general/for future reference though, like others are mentioning, coming up with ways to push the survival of the fittest notion is a pretty good way to do it, since it doesn't just kill unlucky norns but ensures that the weak are weeded out from the gene pool.

I personally like to rig up an Egg Finder to a Timer (both from The High Tech Hand and put the set in the bottom of the DS warp room to essentially force the Creatures IQ Test on every newborn.
As your creatures become more resilient, you can keep introducing more and more toxic agents along the pathway to the norn meso, and eventually into the meso itself.

You might also consider installing the WolfMate if you haven't-- it'll automatically export old norns, which not only keeps the population down (without pausing evolution like a population limit does) but also gives you a sort of tangible record to track your progress in the run. Furthermore, if you accidentally over-poison your world and your entire population dies out, all your hard work isn't lost, just import the last 6-8 creatures that were exported (and therefore proven themselves as genetically stable), reclone them as babies (really simple with something like The Orb)and just pick up where you left off.

Hope this helps a little :P

I tried the Orb, I couldn't get the thing working... the IQ test is a good idea, though.

Haha, I might have to call my current world a wash, though. It was a shame. They started evolving Banshee Grendel parts. O_O It amazed me... I didn't even know that was possible...
