I've been trying to get C1 to work on Vista for a long time, but nothing I try seems to work... :(

Does anyone know a way to get C1 working on Vista, or is it just "too old" for the new Windows??

Your help is really appreciated. :D

C1 works just fine on my Vista computer, running Vista Home Premium. It took some fiddling, first, though. First off, go to the Creatures 1 directory (Default is C:/Program Files/Creatures), and then set all of the .exe files in there to run in compatability mode for Windows 98 and set them all to run as administrator. If you don't have an administrator account, I'm afraid I have no idea what to do D:

^ Yes, try that.

If you're still having trouble though, make mention of which version of C1 you speak of-- the original or the one re-released with C2? I think they're slightly different (the re-released one was slightly altered to be more compatible with newer systems if I remember right?) and might require different methods to get working.

That said, I don't have vista so I can't help you directly :(

(ps- my C1, its the really old one, released by itself).

I can get it to install and open, but just before it loads completely it comes up with:
"SMALL FURRY CREATURES MFC Application has stopped working"

....... Oh dear.

Dear, I'm sorry but.... the old C1 standalone, is so old that I really, really doubt that it will work on Vista.

C1 from The Albian Years can work on Vista, but as far as I am concerned, the older one cannot....

The Albian Years isn't really for sale at retail. I'm afraid you're going to have to order a copy online.

There should be some on Ebay and Amazon.

Methinks I should pick up a copy of Albian Years at some point....

*owns original versions of C1 and C2 and is amazed they still work on WinXP*

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

I got it working, and when it does work it works fine- but it took some serious fiddling with to get that out of it!

As memory best serves me, here's what I did.
Treesprites' page has some patches and information about getting C1 to work on Vista. I reccomend you give that a look, because I never found a way to get it to work without going via that patch.

After that, it seemed to refuse to recognise the disk at all even though it was the right one- so I downloaded the batch file and registry edit to enable the no-CD function.

You also might need to run the .exes of the applets before you launch the game- for some reason my Owners' Kit fails on every odd startup and won't register newborn Norns or their names. But if it's run before launch it does work.

I think there was anywhere a patch to run it on newer versions of windows (sorry when I talk about the same like Jackathyn)

you could try to install openC2e. it was made for such problems, or am I wrong?

My C1 work on Vista too.
If you have troubles with C1, you can download the "Creatures BORG" add-on, by Alexander Leammle. This programm add a lot of new tools in the game, and fix a few bugs.
