I think I keep asking this question around every year in hope that something new has been developed or discovered. For if only I could find a solution to this, I might be able to play creatures for more than a week at a time because getting frustrated and uninstalling it again...
So here we go.
This is how it works. I start a new world in Docking Station. It starts out nice and quick, the full 20 ticks a second. Naturally, as the world fills up with creatures and agents, this slows down a bit. Only... a lot. Often by the time my worlds are three hours old, I'm doing good if I'm getting 4 ticks/second, but more often than not I'm only getting 1.2 - 1.5. Putting the game in "fast ticks" mode makes very little difference. If I want to continue on, I have to export all my creatures, create a new world, and import them all. Which is a pain, especially when I have to do it roughly every 3-4 hours. Wolfling runs are near impossible.
I understand the more creatures you have/agents you inject, the slower the game runs. But that seems to be a permanent effect in my worlds. Even if I completely clear out a slow world of creatures and unneeded agents, performance barely increases. It's like all the scripts are still running.
This same thing happens every year or so when I feel the need to play creatures and reinstall the game, so it's doubtful that it's a bad install, a particular agent, or anything of that sort (thought I do always install the norn packs, so it's possible an agent there is screwing it up).
So... is there any way to tweak this? Maybe some way to purge my slow worlds of the unnecessary scripts it's hanging on to? Force the game to run faster? Anything? I just want to play again

well i can maybe explain this becuse it is a DS World. You know the bramboo makes the world slow down after a while. Well download the bramboo fix.
And if you wana read more about this read this.

Ahhhh thanks so much! I will have to try this out; it's certainly worth the reinstall to try
You may have saved my creature-hobby!

This happens to me when I save/reload a game. I always thought it was just an engine failure.
...but it doesn't get nearly as bad. Try that bramboo fix thing. Out of curiosity, can you tell us about your CPU? |

yeah, my first thought is to ask about cpu's and system capabilities.
if we're not the change we want to see
if we're not the change, who will be? |

My computer is terribly old-- I'm sure that plays a factor in it.
But the bramboo fix has helped a -ton-; it's essentially the reason I'm still posting here! My worlds still slow down when I start getting huge heaps of norns in them, but at least as soon as I export them or remove some extra agents, my world goes right back to it's faster pace.
I should be getting a new computer come christmas time, so hopefully that will speed things up even more.
Thanks much guys

A small thing that I haven't seen anyone else suggest- are you running it in windowed or full screen mode? Curiously, my computer seems to run the program better in full screen mode. I think it's because windowed mode probably involves a bit of re-rendering and resizing the sprites in question, which would have to take system resources- so if it's windowed, perhaps give it a test full-screen? |
