Yesterday whilst browsing Creature Labs at my local library I visited the downloads page. And was I Gobsmacked! All five Norns (Fallow, Harlequin, Astro, Zebra, and Siamese) originally only available from the Creatures Mall are free! I downloaded the Astro and Zebra instantly, and are planning on downloading the Siamese Norns today. I sure hope they start releasing the Hardman, Treehugger, Toxic, Bondi and Banshee Packs soon. Now we can start building up our breed collections! |

I know, aren't they cute? The other breeds aren't likely to be put up for free as Lisa still hopes to set up a shop at some point in the future.

i wish they´d release the good breeds for free rather the rushed breeds |

Those breeds aren't rushed! Just because they don't have a new genome doesn't mean they didn't take a lot of work!
Just the look of the creatures is enough, at least in my mind.
Making those norns took a lot of testing, 3d modeling, and the like. These aren't a "rush job" at all. YOU try making a norn that looks as good as that.
Anyway, back on topic....
I already had the harlequins and the fallows when I got exodus, but the other breeds are.... SQUEEE! :3 I especially love the astros and the zebras. :3

I will admit that was really harsh, to word it differently, i personally like norn genomes over looks.
I am also bitter they never released exodus with all the new norns.
I will admit that all those different genomes turn my c3 world into a big trainwreck anyway |

The shop breeds they released for free were to make up for the Gameware shop being closed for so long. They probably won't put out the other breeds for free unless something convinces them to permanantly close the shop. So you'll have to buy them when the shop comes back, which will hopefully be soon.

Wait.
What?
I don't think they'd put up for pay what they released for free in just a few weeks, there'd be uproar

The freebie breeds will probably continue to be free after the shop comes back. The breeds which have not been released for free (Bondi, Hardman, Toxic, Treehugger, Banshee Grendel) will probably be sold in the shop, when the shop returns. Not all the breeds are free, but all the ones on the Docking Station Downloads page are free. Clear as mud?

First of all, YAY!!!!!!
I agree that it wouldn't make very much sense for Gameware to make a free breed pay-only again. If they intended to make it a buyable later, why would they make it free in the first place? How many people have now downloaded the breed when they would otherwise pay good money for it?
I suspect those breeds weren't bringing in quite as much money as the others in the first place, since they don't come with new genomes, don't come with new toys, etc., so the buyer is getting less for their money.
What I'd like to know now is if they've dropped the "breed base ban" for those breeds--is it now acceptable to make new breeds based partially on the sprites from the breeds that have just been released, since they are no longer making money off those breeds?

not to be negative, but how much of an uproar could there possibly be? how many does our community really number?

Hard to say... I don't think anyone's ever done a census on the CC, but if I had to guess several hundred active to moderately active people, plus several times that number in more casual players.

it would be a pretty hard census to take, too. i meant it figuratively; it seems we don't have a lot of clout in the gaming world =\

Also many CC people no longer play creatures but still consider themselves part of the community (namely me, but there's others). I don't think they'll be too excited.
Yes, I'm the forum ... Any questions?

I would presume you are correct Ghosthande -
Basing new breeds on those available free will not cause any financial loss to Gameware,
and CL's initial topic of wanting a 'wider spread of breed designs' probably isn't by any means as important now as it was a decade ago.
