I downloaded C1 from GOG.com after reminiscing about playing it as a kid and realize now that there's this whole other experience with it that allows you to create entirely new breeds and "sprites" and "genetics" and I want to try this! What advice can anyone give to someone who is completely amateur at this? Where do I start? What material can I read to start with?
Well, creature genetics are pretty crazy, and I have no idea how to explain them, because this is C1 we're talking about, and I'm used to C3 genetics. You'll need to have someone else tell you about that. With sprites, it's pretty straightforward. You'll need image creation skills, of course, but after that, it's as simple as painting the background black and popping the whole thing into a sprite editor.
Bobcob is a very useful sprite editing program suitable for both creatures 1 and 2 and its layout is very simple. So there shouldn't be too much confusion there. You just open an old breed spr. (Ex. a001.spr, which can be found in the creatures 1 image folder.) and in order (order is very important for your breed to look correct in this process) you will edit each sprite in the file by replacing the originals with your newly edited or completely redrawn sprites.
I found that the Creatures Editor 32 is a good program to convert sprites into .bmp with. (The game uses .bmp files only) Although, if bobcob isn't working for you, there are many other programs that work just like it. For example, sprite editor allows you to just paste your sprites in place much like bobcob but a little bit differently. In the end it is all a matter of preference when it comes to choosing how to do this. I went with bobcob and creatures editor 32 to take the spr file, break it up and edit all 1000 or so image sprites for each gender. Keep in mind, breed making takes a lot of patience and may get tedious. I am currently on hiatus from a creatures 2 breed I'm working on right now because it takes a lot out of me to do all the head sprites on there own.
But enough of my rambling with that. With creatures 1 it is pretty straight forward and there are lots of resources out there to help with the task of making your own breed. I created one, my breed for creatures 1 is the Cheri Norns. Hope that helps with explaining the sprite process, as for .att files, I'm no expert at them as there is some coding involved. .gen files are confusing but I hear they aren't so bad to work on, but for now, you could stick with a different .gen file and then edit it to be the way you want it to later.
Jessica reported that she didn't need to do anything particular for CrEd32 to get it to work in Windows 7. I'm not sure about BOBCOB - perhaps if you try the XP version and let us know?
