So, I've decided to open up a project I've had baking in my head for a long time, and I've recently managed to crack down and start working on.
As the title says, this is a Geat breed, an effort to bring Dragons to the game, because if any of you have known me over these many years (9 years? woah) I love dragons, and so do you.
So far, I've gotten concept art for the head, and a mesh of the head in Mudbox.
Concept art on my anthropology homework\
First Mudbox render, no paint or texture yet
I don't really know how to add fine details to Mudbox like smaller horns or the fins, but I'm working as I go. I have the student Mudbox and Maya for the next three years, hopefully it's not going to take THAT long to get this thing made
I'm not going to be having spriters, body data-ers, or geneticists on this project for a while, but I'd like to see if people are interested in this project. If anything I could probably do the genetics, though I do have some complicated ideas in mind that are out of my own reach right now.
Some basic ideas for the breed genetics
-In some ways, they'll be similar to Draconian norns. Almost all critter/bug diet, babies start out weak and need lots of nurture, they prefer warm environments, that sort of stuff
-I want their genetics to work with the Flying Agent available, but more than just having them naturally produce the chemical involved in flying. If possible, I'd like for them to not only know when to fly, but know when to come down.
-I'd like to utilize a few of the unused CA smell chemicals in their genetic code for stuff like breeding, fighting, and maybe recognizing offspring/parents. Have the kids follow the parents around for protection sort of thing
-They're most likely gonna have wings, and I'm sort of wondering if there's a way to finagle the pose/gait genes to have a "flying animation"
-Great thing would be if they had the instincts to hunt other creatures, utilizing agents that enable "cannibalism"
-The base gene would probably be CFE Gizmo
I'm putting up this topic as a base for this project, so I can remind myself to get off my behind and finish it. This is a big sculpting project, especially since I have little experience with Maya and Mudbox (though they are much easier and far more intuitive than Blender to me, honestly). But I will really do my best.
And hey, if this project takes a really long time, I probably can just toss it into Grandroids when that gets released. Although that might already be in the works
Edit: Forgot to mention my most current issue with the mesh: Separating the jaw. I'd sure like for this thing to be able to open its mouth so I can attach joints to the jaw and move it for different expressions but I can't find a tool in mudbox to do it. Maybe I should export it to maya now? I dunno.

I'll make a longer comment on this later, but I would like to say something right now: I strongly advise against making them geats.
In C3/DS, there's a nasty glitch where all the rooms in a world will turn to air should two geats look at each other. This basically means that water areas will suddenly dry up, formerly fertile areas will stop being able to support plant life, and so on. As far as anyone can tell it appears to be an engine glitch and is therefore unfixable through CAOs alone.
If you still want to make them geats despite this glitch then it's your breed, but otherwise I'd suggest just making them one of the three default species.

That...is really weird, and I never knew that. I've been keeping Shee a few of my worlds for so long and never noticed, probably because I just had them hanging around the meso.
Well dang, maybe I'll make them ettins or something, there need to be more ettin breeds.

Sprites could still be set to a choosen geat slot and from there you could just do 2 versions genetic wise (Norn or Geat), just few tweaks along with the genus gene to change and thats all, as much I know.
Dragons are cool, I had a Grendel dragon breed I wanted to make but still only have the the front and one side sprite for both baby genders(wonder if I ever will be back to finish of what I still have of my projects and breeds).
Hopefuly you probaly will be able to finish youre breed :3 |

I think this is a brilliant idea! I love dragons too. I wish I was one.

I personally think you should make them Grendels. It makes sense, because Grendels are already reptilian creatures, and the voices sound good for a dragon. If you gave the eggs an overhaul, they'd look even more like dragon eggs, but they already make good dragon eggs.
If you're going to make the wings flap, you'll have to mix the wing sprites into the arm sprites, like the way Gargoyle Norns do the wings, because the body can't have flapping wings without constantly swinging up and down in flight, which just looks plain weird. If the dragons have arm wings,it'll still look awkward in flight, but arm swinging looks better than body swinging.
I'd also recommend making the dragons much larger than Norns if they're going to be killing and eating them. |

Grendel breeds are so very much needed! I'd second that. |

Oh man, seems since I mentioned my unfinished grendel dragon now everyone suggest grendel XD
Nah just joking , theyre reptilian and is probaly perfect fit.
Unless you wanted it as a geat for a specific reason?
Will be interessting to see progress of this, love to see more new breeds
made
I wonder how big will this dragons be in size? |

So apparently mudbox just loves to corrupt files. Also I can't quite do what I want with the model in mudbox and porting it to maya is proving to be far more complicated than I thought it would be
I'm going to fall back on my original idea - sculpting the thing out of actual clay. I'm heading home soon so I can get to my sculpting stash and start work on this, I just need to get wire for the armature.

I also forgot to mention another thing about why the dragons should not be Geats. Geats are very buggy, seeing as the game is not programmed to handle them. In docked worlds,if the eyes of two living Geats meet in certain locations, the game will crash. When they don't crash the game, the rooms they are in will turn to air. They don't come with voices or bibble by default, either,so if a Geat were to go through the Warp and enter an unsuspecting child or other person's world with nothing downloaded, the game would crash, regardless of whether or not C3 is installed on the person's computer. So,they're extremely glitchy. |

Alright, so I was introduced to Sculptris and now I'm in love.

I've been fiddling with it, and I think I finally figured out a good system with the jaw as a separate object. As you can see, I still need to add some details to the upper head, such as eyes.
I'm in the throws of a rather complicated quarter, but I will be updating when I can
