I figured that there should be a thread for fellow creature series fans who are in college, or near college in general.
I've got one more week until xmas break, and I've been lucky enough to basically have no real finals stress. The only big things I have to do are turn in a group research paper which should already be done right now (I finished my part), and present a sample of my writing to the entirety of my university's creative writing student body (which I am super nervous about and also excited).
My major is Literature-Creative Writing, my SO is here with me majoring in Film and we both love our respective majors. We live in a house with single rooms since we're junior transfers.
One of our housemates is having issues with her major (chemistry) and she's considering taking something else and learning chem as a minor instead. We kinda had a talk with her about that and the whole myth of "if you don't do a STEM major you're gonna work at starbucks forever and that's awful and it will be completely your fault". I told her that growing up I also enjoyed both art and science, but once you get to a certain level unfortunately the education system forces you to pick one thing. I ended up going with art because I found I could do art as a main and keep my interest of science going on the side far easier than I could have science as a main and do art on the side.
So I guess I hope I helped, but I don't really know what else to say.
Anyone else have college stuff to share?

Majoring in STEM doesn't guarantee you job security. Neurologists working as coffee baristas, geologists working as carpenters... The days when a programmer fresh out of college could dictate their healthcare coverage and retirement benefits are long gone. I mean, there were days when you didn't need a STEM background to be able to afford sending your three kids to college to become successful doctors, musicians, lawyers et cetera. Actually, I hear from my law student friend that even the corporate lawyer grads are having trouble finding jobs now. And the sequestration cuts on research programmes... The joke, "We can share the monkey!" followed by the joke, "You shouldn't call your intern that."
Most of the interesting college stuff I personally have to share is about how my IT professors are great at the subject they teach but are terrible at teaching (they became professors to avoid unemployment), and the artifices that college administration employ to steal and conceal funds, manipulate Student Life, stifle academic freedom, and generally mismanage the college for their own profit. The positive experiences I had during my college life, I owe more to the city and its people, really. Among choristers the city's known as the choral centre of the country, if not the world. The people here are very friendly, the old-timers have much to pass down, the city's history and the struggles waged there...
Um, so, happy things! I was part of the college choir as a contralto. I was also part of the Anime Club but it met inconsistently... There was a building where people gather to play board games, card games, mobile games, etc. Those were always fun to watch. |

I was going to a psychology major when I heard my psychology professors talking in the hall. They were saying the whole department was getting a huge cut because none of the students were graduating and getting jobs. Next thing I know, my boyfriend's brother is graduating as a psychology major and going straight back to school cause he could only find a job as a desk clerk at the gas company.
This was made all the more ironic as my boyfriend's parents were very disappointed in him for going to culinary school to become a cook. Why couldn't he go to school like his brother to become a respectable doctor? Right now my boyfriend is the only one in his entire family with a job. That job market turned on people fast.
I decided to become a certified veterinary technician. Right now I'm avoiding studying for finals because I'm burnt out. I do a lot of training and taking care of animals around my house and my boyfriend's house. I have a parrot myself, and then my family has a macaw, two cats, a dog, and my boyfriend's has three rats, a cockatiel, and a dog. It's not hard to see were my life was going after I realized psychology wasn't the answer. I keep busy.
I've managed to keep a lot more of my friends from high school then a lot of the parents I grew up with. It's a good thing, cause right now I think I'd drive anyone who hadn't known me for a long time bonkers. Curse you finals! |
