Your favourite long dead games?

I have PLENTY of long-dead games that I love. Most of them closed down, leaving no one to be able to play or access it, and others people have forgotten about and don't play anymore. I was wondering if anyone else has any!

My favourite long dead games are:
-The Original Impressive Title (Heres a video of it, due to it being too big to explain. All I will explain is that it closed down and now there are servers, but usually there are rarely any active players, and they usually either turn to crap or die. Youtubee yaayy )

-WOS/Well of Souls. (This game is almost 100% dead with no players. Only a few in their late 20s/ early 30s. I learned of it from my uncle and brother. I'm probably the youngest person who knows of it's existance at the moment, because I'm 15. There are no videos of it. :'< )

-Gopets. (This game was so good, and I want to cry even when thinking about it. This was my first online game I got into, and made some good friends on it. I seriously miss this game and I hate Zynga for buying it and then basically throwing it into the trash, ignoring the fanbase. Video here )

-Faunasphere(Bigfish Games just closed it because it "Was making no money" when everything was over-priced. It was an awesome game with a good community, and I dearly miss it. Click here guys )

So, how bout you guys?

City of Heroes/Villains... I still miss my avatars in that game... I got a lot more attached to them because of how much I was able to customize their looks, powers, and costumes and really give them their own story, I never had a problem naming them because I felt I knew them more. Plus the adventure creating part of that game was amazing, and the base-building and social aspect of having your own league. The only game I can think of where it was practically impossible to ever create a character that was exactly the same as anyone else's. Even inside the same specs you had so much freedom to tweak every power and statistic in so many ways, and even have different endgame powers, all based on how you wanted to play. Even the leveling and gameplay could be totally different based on what you wanted to do, many branching storylines, etc.. you basically got to make your own story the whole way through the game if you wanted.

This is so different from most other MMOs, where you essentially just have to use a 'perfect build' of a few different class/spec combinations, and try to get 'the best' gear which makes you all look exactly the same, and then every race or faction has a pre-made story you are pretty much stuck with.

I never really got into free-to-plays much. I did play Ikariam for quite a while - that's still going, but has changed out of all recognition. I used to play Vampires (A Dark Alleyway) a lot too, though that has far fewer players than a few years ago. I keep meaning to go back to it, because for something surprisingly simple, it's a lot of fun.

I'm old enough to remember when all games came in a box and cost a lot. Some of my favourites from years ago I can't run (because they were designed for very slow computers running Windows 95, although I could probably create a virtual environment for them now - tech having come full circle.) One of my most favourite games was Caesar II. The third game in the series is still very playable, but the second game was special - it had a ton of background information about the ancient Romans (coming at a time when games aimed to enlighten as well as entertain) and amazing graphics and music for its time. I'm going to have to try to virtualise it because I just found some images for it online and it's made me all nostalgic to play it again!

Legend of Spyro was the best series ever, but it died right after Dawn of the dragon and then Skylanders:Spyro's Adventure happened.Sonic adventure was also great, but it isn't really very dead, just forgotten by Sonic Team. They said they might make sonic adventure 3 if enough people wanted it,but half the fanbase complains that there's no sonic adventure 3 to this day,and Sonic Team still refuses to make it.

EDIT:Wow,after seeing the last few minutes of Faunasphere's existence,I tear up and develop extreme rage and hatred towards Bigfish Games just thinking about that game.

I like a lot of older games. And I mean really older games, like the old "shareware" stuff from the 90's. Here are some of my top favorites:

Amazon Trail: I originally got the disk free off a cereal box. Your goal is to go up the Amazon to find Vilcabamba. You can fish/gather supplies, talk and trade with people you meet, and photograph wildlife. You get awards along the way as you make progress. I actually wrote fanfiction about this game ages back...

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure: one of the funnest old games I've ever played. You're this little alien kid who is trying to traverse an alien planet in order to rescue his parents. He can kill bad guys by jumping on their heads, a bit like Mario... but unlike Mario he has suction cup hands! He can climb walls and plant bombs. I think this is actually a trilogy, but I've only ever played the first game.

The Gobliiins trilogy: an extremely wacky and funny puzzle game where you control these little goblins in a fantasy world, and have to guide them through different adventures. Even after twenty years I still love this series! Especially the second and third games. The original version doesn't work well on newer computers but GOG has a pack that includes all three games; I picked it up a while ago for $3.

Gruntz: really funny, a strategy game where you command a bunch of clay characters and have to defeat the computer-controlled team in different levels. It's a little like what you might get if you crossed Neverhood with Lemmings.

Jetpack: probably the most addicting game I've ever played. You're this little guy with a jetpack running around getting gemstones and gold treasure, avoiding weird monsters and other mechanisms that could hurt you. You can actually design and save your own levels. There isn't enough I can say in praise of this game; if you know how to work DOSBox, give it a try!

Maddog Williams: a puzzle RPG. One of the very few RPGs I have played and really liked. Humorous, and just challenging enough; it differs from Gobliiins because the solutions to puzzles are more likely to be logical, rather than "rule of funny", so they tend to be easier to figure out.

Tyrian: typical vertical-scrolling shooting game where you're in a little ship firing at things that come toward you. This is another really addicting one. You get to upgrade your ship (or even buy a different one) as you progress, but instead of just making things better you get your choice of kinds of weapons too. It's not usually that humorous, but a couple parts of it get really wacky. You can actually download the full game for free at GOG!

Most if not all of these games require DOSBox to play, except Tyrian.

I miss Pixie Hollow Online, FreeRealms, and the original Littlest Pet Shop online game. They all shut down. :(

FreeRealms shut down?? I liked that game...

I miss the original Toontown, I actually ended up getting a black cat on there to...

Also GoPets, even though I was just barely old enough to remember it, but if I remember it being good back then, then it must have been good.

It is also a shame where the Spyro games went... I use to love them when I was younger! Even if it was just flying around on Dawn of the Dragon. (I would just get these random urges to fly around that Cheetah valley, lol...)

I liked FreeRealms but gave them up after they got hijacked - more specifically, my account was corrupted so I couldn't log in but I couldn't register. I paid hard earned money to unlock the full game, too.

Aww! I keep hearing fun things about Faunasphere but I never got to play it. I only heard about it after it closed.

My GF and I were big fans of City of Heroes. There were no "perfect builds", everyone did their own thing and it worked well. Both of our favourite characters were villains, my GF was a robot (like this) whose primary was electrical blast (I can't put a name on the rest), and I was a... Well, I looked a bit like M. Bison I guess, but not as insanely muscular, definitely cooler, and with a bandana covering his jaw (I like to think it was because he had no jaw :P). His primary was Dark Melee and his secondary was Stalker Super Reflexes. I'm really looking forward to City of Titans.

Did anyone ever play Glitch? It was a quirky little MMO, 2D side-scrolling platformer where you made lots of stuff. Almost all the skills had to do with crafting. You could make food, furniture, potions, permits, etc. There were lots of different areas and they all had different resources, so most people got houses where it was convenient to their line of trade. There were quests, but not really an end goal because the main narrative hadn't been implemented yet. One of the most fun things was building streets--players contributed construction materials to expand the game's world. Occasionally there'd be giant rook invasions that would really mess up the streets, injuring and killing local fauna and flora. Everyone did their best to bring those streets back to life. The game had a fun sense of humour. I think what killed is was the lack of publicity; they made videos and posted them on Youtube, but other than that, the developers didn't go out of their way to let people know their game existed.

RIP original Spyro trilogy. Oh, and the GBA spin-offs. Those were surprisingly good.

We're lucky that the creatures series isn't on the list of games that have been left to rot over the years. It was only abandoned and left floating around for the community to pretty much take over its development using remnants of tutorials for how to code it,ending up like the sonic adventure series without all the screaming fits for a few years until Creatures Online was announced.

I also remember really liking Flutter on Facebook, but that ended up like the spyro series, demolished, the remains picked up and cobbled together into something that could never even compare to what it once was.

At least Creatures still has third party developers and an active community loaded with people like us on its side. All these other games have either been left to gather dust by the developers, forgotten, thrown into a grinder, never to be played again,or all three, leaving the original creatures triology to assume the role of king of lost and forgotten games. The creatures series in itself just proves that games that are left to rot for years at a time can still have an active community if there are ways to make third party for them.A few examples of other games that ended up like creatures, but with nowhere near as large of a community include the petz series and the spore series.Creatures is pretty much the world's number one best game in the world of lost games.

Another thing adding to the lost and forgotten factor is that fans of the series are almost nonexistent away from the caves. This place is pretty much the place to go if you want to be assured that Creatures isn't dead. The only reason the community didn't die long ago is the sheer epicness of the series. All the awesome things the players here have created is probably also part of that reason.

I've been fairly lucky with my free to play games, most of them are still around. My old favorites like Adveture Quest or Neopets are still around. The closest I have is probably Aquazone or Gaia Online. Gaia Online is technically stil laround, but the admins on it have gotten so corrupt that they added legit gold generators to the game. You have to spend real money to buy any of the nicer items as well. So the game is dead to me.

Aquazone really is dead. You can't buy the best version anymore, and most of the fan sites have died. I'm surprised Creatures or Petz hasn't died out long ago as well. It's probably because Pets and Creatures are both modifiable though. Plus Creatures has an amazing spirit festival every year.

Oh snap, you played Aquazone, too? I got my copy of Aquazone Deluxe 2 + guppies just a few years ago from Amazon, used. So I guess that's another dead game I can add to the list of dead games I enjoy.

I'm addicted to the new Flutter. It's not as cool as the old questing and decorating system, but events are frequent, it has a lovely (if facebooky) community, and I haven't had to spend a cent to get any single piece of content, even the limited event butterflies. It's the only phone game I've found worth sticking to.

As for abandoned games, man, Psypets! That's the one pet game I would have stayed with, sadly the developer, ThatGuyBen, has moved on. The game is still online, but with very few people left and no updates, it would just be a grind to keep going. https://www.psypets.net/
Apparently since the dev released the code, there's now a new version here: https://terrepets.com/ but Ben was a pretty darn good game designer, I doubt a couple of fans could be as amazing as he was at churning out new features and minigames.

Also I just learned Valenth has closed. I wasn't about to play that again, but still, it's sad, the art was really nice.

Ian, you played Gopets? What was your GP name? Mine was mudpup101, and I always got banned from buy/sell/trade because I was a spamming 8 y/o.

Also, another game I can add to dead games is the original Tales Runner. It was a nice fairy-tale kind of game where you raced on foot. Sure, people have made their own servers, but the original will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart. People were either nice or mean to newbies, and one of the top ranking players was my friend. He/she kept buying me stuff, which I'm thankful for. But yeah, the community was wacky, and it was a really fun game. The new servers are filled with un-dealt with hackers, trolls, or just have very few players.

*Sob* I miss ToonTown... I remember when black cats were still a secret and weren't publicly announced every year.

I guess the first 3 Spyro games can now be called dead, since the new Playstation consoles are no longer backwards-compatible. Spyro: Year of the Dragon is probably my all-time favorite game ever, I've beat it countless times over the years and still play it often on my PS2.

What ever happened with Animal Jam and Club Penguin, are they still around? I used to play those all the time (I even beta-tested one), but I quit after they got way too commercialized. After about a year of each being around they seemed like nothing but a cheap way for their respective companies to make loads of easy money (and boy did they make a lot, draining the wallets of countless 10 year-olds' parents).

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention the old Oregon Trail games, you know, the ones for Windows 95? Those were fun. I might still be able play them if I ever set up my old '97 computer again (those things last FOREVER)...

Speaking of Oregon Trail (I loved that game, even if my poor wife did die of dysentery after we crossed that river and lost one of our oxen... at least I got to join her a couple months later when we all froze to death in the Rockies...)

Has anyone ever seen or played 'Organ Trail'? It gives me so much nostalgia... basically Oregon Trail set in a zombie apocalypse... 8 bit graphics and sounds and everything... It's really good.

I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned the original Ragnarok Online, I played that a little but didn't get too much into it, still it was quite popular at the time and it was pretty cool...

Oh, I use to play that game with my older brother! I loved it. My brother ended up giving me his account when he quit, on which he had wings, rare items and everything. He became friends with a mod, so he had a bunch of cool stuff. But I loved the 2.5D graphics Ragnarok online had. It felt... unique. The community started dying down, so I ended up quitting but I'll never forget it.

ParaWorld.
It's a dinosaur RTS game, and is completely awesome, but because it didn't make enough money, the company got shut down.
Makes me really sad, ParaWorld is a really amazing game, and deserves a proper fanbase.
