Fanfiction Abuse

I really need some advice on what to do. I recently wrote a fanfiction based on The Simpsons. I think I posted it about 24 hours ago... somewhere around that time frame...

Anyway, ever since I've posted it, I've been subjected to horrific abuse from some of the other users. I've had nothing but negative reviews on my story and now I feel really offended and hurt by what has happened. I'm too scared to report the problem to the website. Can you guys please help?

By the way the website in question is www.fanfiction.net

That sounds terrible, Espeon_US. You should report it straight away; nobody deserves to put up with this sort of stuff! :(

I have no idea how old you are, but have you told a parent, or a friend about this? Is there a way you can disable reviews on the fanfiction you posted? These users obviously have nothing better to do than write negative reviews, and they clearly aren't worth any of your time. [nangry]

Write what pleases you. No matter what you write, there will always be someone there to leave a nastygram review. Think of how many authors have had their books burned because people didn't like what they wrote. :) Do any of your reviewers give constructive criticism, or is it all just 'this is bad!!!'? I'd suggest reporting the worst comments to the admin team there (but don't expect a speedy response), and writing another piece of fanfiction. :) Don't let the haters get you down.

You might also consider finding a fandom-specific avenue to publish in - they tend to be a bit more welcoming than Fanfiction.Net.

Were these users logged in, or were their comments anonymous? If they were registered, then certainly report them, as C-Rex suggested. If they were anonymous, then that's exactly what I dislike about sites like FanFiction.net. Somebody has the confidence to publish their work on there, for all to see and then it's too easy for people to abuse the comment system by posting rude, hurtful reviews, because FanFiction.net makes it possible for them to post anonymously. That's what deterred me and made me leave the site, in my own personal experience. :\ I think you can disable anonymous reviews since then though. If you can, it's definitely worth looking into.

In no way do I think you should stop writing, just because of a bunch of prats. They exist on every corner of the Internet, unfortunately. Except on this website though, because we're awesome! I'm really sorry that this has happened to you, but hopefully you'll bounce back. If it feels safer, you're always welcome to share your stories in our Writings Forum. It could use a little love, and I'm sure we'd all enjoy reading what you've written. Nobody's going to unfairly criticise you here. :)

With the caveat that stories posted here must be suitable for kids under the age of 13, as per the site rules. ;)

What are you suggesting about Espeon_DS' stories, Malkin? [nlaugh] (I kid, good point!)

My story was rated "M" for "Mature"... o_O Seriously, I need to give certain characters some fun... right?

Just that big themes aren't always child-friendly. :) I found that since Fanfiction.Net got rid of its NC-17 rating (was it really 12 years ago?) sometimes the M rating gets a bit abused. [nblush]

To echo what Malkin said, report the abusive comments but leave any constructive criticism alone.

Something to keep in mind when it comes to fanfics is that majority of the time, readers/reviewers are highly immature (from what I've seen anyways) and so will lash out at the first thing they dislike.

Also yes, I would try to find a more specific site for your writings compared to an all-inclusive site like FF.net.

I second that suggestion. Although reporting such people can definitely be worthwhile, you also have to keep in mind that FF.net tends to be a magnet for trolls because it's such a huge, well-known site. More than a few people there only visit because it provides a platform and an excuse to flame other people. I've known plenty of fanfiction writers, extremely good ones, who spurn FF.net and stick to smaller sites because the quality of their members is higher.

Smaller fansites generally don't have such a severe problem because the moderators care more about the fandom/site, and since smaller sites have less activity the staff doesn't have such a massive number of complaints and reports to wade through. You're a lot more likely to encounter helpful, friendly people who share your enthusiasm and will give you good reviews and actually constructive criticism. Fandom-specific sites are a good place to get your feet wet in the fanfic circle, glean helpful tips and build your confidence before you plunge into the deep end, although some of them are so nice that you might decide you don't want to go back to FF.net.

Terrible! Rude, unhelpful reviews are one thing, but actually making someone feel unsafe? That's terrible. I'm sorry you had to endure that.

The anonymous comments also drove me away from Fanfiction.net. After that, I moved to a forum, which sadly doesn't exist anymore. Maybe you can find a site dedicated to the type of fan fiction you wrote? In my experience they require members to register and have very welcoming communities.

Or! Setting up your own blog for your writings is another option. That way you don't have to worry about waiting for site moderators to take down garbage comments.

I definitely agree with what others here have said... don't let a bunch of bad-natured people make you feel like you shouldn't have the right to express yourself... There will always be people who like to flame or attempt to ridicule or make other people feel bad... The best thing you can do is make sure they know that they are wasting their time and that they don't bother you with their worthless and hateful comments.

Here's a quote I put up in another thread, but I think it is relevant here...

"The only way to avoid criticism is to say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing." - Aristotle

And a couple more for good measure...

“You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.” - Winston Churchill

“Don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches.” - Andy Warhol

That last one I find is especially true... if your writing is getting a lot of strong opinions, then you are doing something right.

Can't deny the awesomeness of Winston Churchill.
