I've totally got the anime bug! I've fallen in love with a fictional character. (In short, I'm a total nutcase.) What's going on with me?

Is anyone else experiencing a similar madness to mine? Please tell me I'm not alone.

I've fallen in love with an imaginary person inside my head. That's pretty much the same, right?

I had it for a long time, started when I was young with an old epic space opera called 'Space Battleship Yamato' (not so well known in west, but it was considered a landmark show, very respected in Japan, and it seriously is one of the best space operas ever put to media... better than star trek, star wars, battlestar galactica, and any number of others, anime or live action, combined... and I love me some star trek), Star wars and battlestar galactica both ripped off so much from this show... it's a real oldie though... from 1976, and the English dubbed version is particulary badly mangled, since the US tried to repackage it as more of a kiddy show... I strongly recommend subtitles if you check it out... and another old show 'Battle of the Planets' (G-FORCE!!) ... and got obsessed with anime again over the last few years after seeing some of the stuff on anime network, toonami, and adult swim, but kind of stopped for a while recently after I found and watched most of the stuff I liked (too many to name)...

I'm really into this new show now, though, Space Dandy... it's really cool, off the wall, and totally hilarious... it's made by the same people that made Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo, all of which I loved. I think it gave me the bug again...

Nah, you're perfectly fine. I've had anime crushes for yeaaars. It all started when I was 13 years old and was watching Yu-Gi-Oh! I got a huge crush on the main character, Yugi. Later, I got a crush on this dude named Bull Borgnine from a relatively unknown anime called Battle B-Daman.

My huge one was Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, I was 14 then. And then a few others along the way, like Viral from Gurren Lagann(still love that guy), Gundam Tanaka from Dangan Ronpa 2, and Integra from Hellsing.

So don't feel bad!

Same here. I've had several anime crushes too, though most of them i have grown out of as of today. One half started out because there was something majorly likeable or relatable to their personalities, the other half because i thought they "looked cool". The only one that has still somewhat stuck today, despite my hobby focus shifting more towards PC games than anime, is Lupin III.

What i'm trying to convey here is: It's perfectly okay to have anime crushes. It's likely you'll get over them sooner or later, but for as long as they take that place in your heart, don't let that inner happiness go to waste.

Lupin III! Yes, love that show... a penpal in Japan sent me a VHS tape of it a long time ago, and I loved it ever since then, then a few years later they started showing it dubbed on cartoon network here, and I got to see more of it. Lupin is just too cool, you really have to love him... :)

I personally love anime, I really like animation in all forms, and I think it's underappreciated as an art form in a lot of places, it's good to see it become more accepted recently, and not suppressed as being 'just for kids' like it has been here for years, so that any serious storytelling in animation was not really accepted or funded by any studios, and dubs of older animes were all butchered to make them into kids shows. My third cousin was Joseph Barbera (of Hanna/Barbera, makers of the Flintstones, Jetsons, Scooby Doo, Space Ghost, Powerpuff Girls, and many many more throughout the years) so I guess love of animation is in my blood.

Hmm as for me, I'd have to say Shin Chan... Assdance! Assdance! Everybody assdance! Oh look! It's Mr. Elephant...!

It's weird how the anime Hellsing has overrun my mind.

Double-D. That was my first animated-character-crush. I'm pretty sure my second was one was Rurouni Kenshin from the anime. No wait, that was Larry 3000 from Time Squad. But I'm pretty sure Rurouni Kenshin is responsible for my partiality to pony tailed and/or red-haired characters. The biggest four crushes I have (yes, present tense) were all created and/or written by Chiaki J. Konaka, who also wrote the Hellsing anime. Two of them are the Devilman Lady and Roger Smith. The other two will remain unnamed so nobody knows what kind of deviant I am. ;)

I'd say have fun with it. If you've got other friends who watch anime (or movies, or play video games, or read books...) then chances are they have crushes of their own. My girlfriend and I actually have a lot of fun talking schoolgirlishly *drops hand* about the characters we fancy.

Okay, Hellsing's gone out the window for sure. Now it's Dragon Ball Z. Goodbye Alucard, hello Piccolo. Someone fix my brain before it EXPLODES!

Maybe write fan-fiction to alleviate the pressure? You don't ever have to publish it, just open a text editor and type away. Or if you're feeling bolder you could find a role-play community online, or somebody else who has a burning passion for Piccolo to chat to. Or maybe you can draw him!

I really think anyone should check out YuYu Hakusho, if they haven't seen it already... it's pretty incredible I think, really great characters with uniquely good relationships and development for a shonen-type anime, nice art, a cool story, and great fighting.

To be honest, my fav anime is "Pandora Hearts". It's got a beautiful plot, music and characters. Although after watching it, you'd have to read the manga.

Okay, things are getting worse now. I started watching The Simpsons out of boredom... and... well, let's just say my "therapy" backfired. I have had counselling for my fictional fantasy issues, you see, and now I've gone off of Piccolo and fallen for [can't even say his name because it's too embarrassing].

If you guys need a hint, think of the quote, "Grease me up, woman." Or, "Bonjour, cheese eating surrender monkeys." ARGH! HELP! MY MIND IS RUINED! ahahaha

EDIT: By the way the character in question is Groundskeeper Willie.
