i was reading this thing right here when i realized, what if we could somehow make what steve grand had in mind when he was designing the first game? naturally, we'd have to change the names of all the creatures, but it'd be incredibly fun to play!

by the way, here's the comparison for the original concepts of the creatures and what we know them as:

original norn: resembles ron norn, with tufted tail. if you have creatures 1, you can find their sprites, albeit off-color, in the full.spr folder. they are sentient, and keep ettins as pets, but the creatures you raise in the game have no knowledge of this, so you will have to teach them how to live - they will starve otherwise.
current norn: cute, catlike creatures that can mainly care for themselves, but may require the hand's assistance. probably have some sentience, and some of them probably think of small critters as their pets. a baby norn will eventually learn what can be eaten, what is dangerous, etc.
original grendel: far different from their draconic counterparts, they are gigantic metallic spiders. you must teach your norns to avoid them at all costs, or else they will undoubtedly be eaten! they live in the albian desert.
current grendel: green draconic beasts. although they will hit around your norns, they can be taught to avoid them, and some can even kill them in a one-on-one fight! they live in the jungle.
original ettin: small, stupid, lizardlike beasts. kept by the norns as pets. not much is given on them, but they supposedly live in caves.
current ettin: small humanoids that like building things. live in the desert and love to steal things.
original geat: benevolent draconic beasts. not very much given about them at all.
current geat: you can make it literally ANYTHING!

i feel like using the c3 engine would be a good start, if we were to do this. the main question is, what genre are we going to make it (it was described as an rpg type thing, but keeping the "computer pets" aspect is vital). it seems like guiding the norns to the place where they would come of age, then taking them back to breed and continue the process would be the best idea, with the journey being long at first, but slowly getting easier, with the norns bringing back supplies until they can quite easily get to the yggdrasil and back, and then you can raise the norns in their burrows like the "real" creatures games.

it would probably take like 1232421 years, but it would be incredibly interesting to play!

It seems a bit forced to me, making my virtual pets circumnavigate the world every generation? That seems like it could get old fast.

Technically possible to make though.

Perhaps the only way replenish supplies is by circumnavigation.
But there is also the question of maintaining this cycle with an increasing population of norns as it seems to be suggesting, if food for a breeding pair runs out after a while, I'm going to have to do the circumnavigation twice as quickly when they have two kids I need to feed.

UNLESS, the food running out is because of seasonal change, but this document says there aren't seasons on Albia. I don't have to follow it to the letter of course, make it so that as each new generation become close to breeding age, winter starts to close in on the norns' birthplace, the plants go into stasis and can't produce food.

Ettins could probably just be a critter that follows norns around and gives entertainment when petted, perhaps with the ability to follow a couple of commands.

I don't think the grendels or jorgamund sound like anything with proper AI either, more like 'badcritter' or 'beast' type that tries to eat creatures.

Don't recall geats being mentioned, though shee are (described as 'humanoid'), which sound like proper AI creatures.

Shee, if they were really in the game, since they love to experiment with everything, should have scripting to do all kinds of weird stuff to creatures and the environment around them randomly... anything from changing objects into other objects or giving them new properties, to healing a creature, changing one of its genes, injecting it with a random chemical, or even turning a creature into a block of cheese... only sky and imagination are the limit here...
