A question about norn sprites

Hello! :D I have a question pertaining to the sprites of creatures.

When pulled up in SpriteBuilder, creature sprites are each within their own black box. I am curious how the game disregards this black background - is there something special about it, or is it just plain black? I guess what I'm really asking is... if I were to make a new norn sprite and give it a black background in MS Paint, would the game still ignore that black background? Or is there something special I have to do?

#000000 or just plain black is read as transparent.

It's an easy trap to fall into, though, when working on darker sprites. Eyes, especially can easily get transparent parts in them, so make sure you know what is all black, and what is close-to-black.

Also, make sure your edges are sharp enough, and don't fade into black. It might look good in graphics, but will look weird in game.
