The United States' Federal Trade Commission has updated The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, a federal law designed to limit the collection of personal information from people younger than 13 years of age. Wikia has decided to comply with it by disabling anonymous editing on the Creatures Wiki.
To edit the Creatures Wiki, it is now necessary to sign up to Wikia and agree to their updated Terms of Use, which require that you be over 13.
For further information, please read Updates to COPPA on the Wikia Community Central site.

That's actually a good thing in my eyes. It makes it harder to troll, and makes the edits more reliable. Not that the Creatures Wiki seems to have been having trouble with trolling or unserious edits, but I think it'll help improve the Wikia community as a whole. |

A very wise decision, hopefully it should prevent all the dumb spam articles that have been popping up recently. |

Besides, it'sactually interesting to see who is contributing. |

I don't like COPPA, but we should have disabled anonymous editing in the first place. |

It won't prevent bots from signing up to make new accounts, and it has the unfortunate effect of making anyone under the age of 13 a viewer, not a participant, in the Creatures Wiki. I have mixed feelings about it, but while we're being hosted by Wikia, that's how they've decided to go about things.

Well darn. Guess it's time to dig up my old Wika account. I usually do all of my editing anonymously...

Huh... I wonder how that'll affect other sites that allow anonymity. ![[nblank] [nblank]](/images/smilies/emot_blank.gif)
(I mean, the ones I'm thinking of aren't directed at children at all and already have an over-13 requirement to sign up or a warning before viewing, but... idk. I'm just vaguely uncomfortable. With the law, that is, not Wikia.) |
