Anyone recall the horse simulation games that sprung up in the 90s? Nowadays, the vast majority of places are basically automated, with only a few of the more forum-based games still in existence. My online life basically consists of Creatures and one game in particular... So far I've managed to get one horse person interested in Creatures, but I've never reached out to see if anyone here remembers these sorts of games!
Feel free to have a look at Desultor! I would be happy to explain things in more detail if anyone is remotely interested in joining. It's a great little community of about 25-30 people. There is a bit of a time commitment involved, but anyone can choose to check in a few times a week or several times per day (like me).
If you have an interest in horses, I highly recommend checking it out! And if you'd like to get an idea of a few more things that go on, check out many of the links in the Market. That Jessica there is the same as me, by the way! And no real life horse experience is needed... The last time I was actually around a horse was something like two years ago. Ha ha!

Oooh. I might be interested when I have some free time. I don't have a lot of time for my PC hobbies lately so now would be a bad time. I -love- sims and horse racing, though.

You would be perfect, Kezune! We've got a healthy racing scene that's slowly building up, and there are usually a decent number of horses available for sale. I was excited this year: My horse won the Kentucky Derby! The simulated one, of course, but getting a winner is always fun! Hopefully you'll decide to join up when you have some free time. I know how that is, though... Hobbies feel more like chores when you have no time for them!

Well, I got a proper steamer so finishing crafts shouldn't take me hours anymore. XD
I had a question about the gameplay. How does it work? Is it forum style or are things like racing and breeding automated? Is there currency in the game? What events are there? Are there limits on the number of horses I can have? Is there anything I'm not thinking of right now that is very interesting?

Lots of great questions! Desultor is mainly a forum-style game, with mostly manual processes. Automated processes include the equine registry and bank. The main hub of activity centers around entering shows/races. These results are randomized, and you can then keep a tally of your horses' points and wins. Advancing through the levels requires a certain number of wins, and I can tell you from experience that it's quite an accomplishment to finally get there! Members must keep track of their own records.
There is in-game currency, which can be earned through winning shows/races, being active, getting a lucky monthly surprise, hosting events, and other ways.
As far as events go, we have a very active scene for many disciplines! Just looking at the calendar for June, we have 20+ events scheduled already. New members can often easily get into a discipline or two, either with newly created horses, Humane Society horses, or member sales.
There are no limits on the number of horses you may have: However, you must be able to care for them by being able to afford feed, tack, medical care, and boarding. Granted, we're pretty relaxed on feed and tack: They're more of an optional feature since they can be a little expensive, but the majority of members typically keep enough feed and tack on hand!
It's a very small community, but the people there are absolutely wonderful! Kind of like what you find here in the Creatures community, only on a smaller scale and in a little bit of a different way. Desultor likely isn't a game for everyone, as it has a lot of manual processes, but I always find it relaxing to visit the forums and see what's going on around the community. If it's right for you, it can be a whole lot of fun!
Hope this helps you out and answers your questions!

I'm always amazed at what you can find on forums. There really is one for everyone. I don't know that I'd have time to play this - haven't the time for all the stuff I want/need to do, unfortunately - but I would've loved it if anything like that had been around when I was in my teens. |

I know Jessica hasn't mentioned it yet, but you can find a lot of information about this site on the Council page of the site. It should provide you with everything you want to know. :3 It's a little bit of a long read but it should clear up everything.

I know what you mean about time commitments! Luckily, the members are all very understanding about taking breaks or not being able to be all that active at times. Games like these worked great when we were all teenagers: So much free time and nothing to worry about! I joke that I'll be playing this one well into my 80s!
We're in the midst of a big recruitment right now, mainly because the market for horses is almost nonexistent. It's a great time to buy! Thanks for hosting that link, Kezune. The rules can be a bit of a long read, but I'm more than happy to answer any specific questions or give a brief overview!
