Ok, I'm curious. What the heck is a Pence, anyway? Or a Kroner? If 4 RMB will by a cup of instant noodles, what would a dinner at the local shop cost? And, hey, Canada and Mexico, have you ever gotten US coins mixed in with your change?

I had a US dime once, but that's about it. Now tell me... Aside from Canadians, can anyone tell me what a toonie is? ![[evil] [evil]](/images/smilies/evil.gif)

No, DarbyDoo, what's a toonie? And if it isn't a unit of currency with a tuna on it I'll be disappointed.
@Karias: While I could have googled all of the info, the thought struck me that there's a nice. international community of folks here who could help sate my curiosity.

No? How about a loonie? ![[nlaugh] [nlaugh]](/images/smilies/emot_laugh.gif)
We call one dollar coins "loonies" because they have a loon on them, and "toonies" are two dollar coins. They have polar bears on them. c: Pennies (now obsolete) have maple leaves, nickels have beavers, dimes have a blue-nose boat thingummy, and quarters have deer. It's all very cool. I collect the Olympic coins.

I've only ever operated on three kinds of currency. Yen from Japan, Pesos and centavos from the Philippines and US Dollars and cents. : P

I wonder, Kezune, do you ever get that slow clerk in Japan, you know, the kid who can't count change? I'd doubt it since Yen is pretty simple, but then again...
@DarbieDoo Pennies are obsolete? Are Canadian prices rounded to the nearest nickel? (I assume so)

Kroner is the currency used in Sweden. Even though they're part of the European Union, they don't want to join the Eurozone.
I've used the US Dollar, Euro, UK Pound, Kroner (DK and SE), Korean Won, Japanese Yen, Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringget, Laos Kip, among others.

TheSecond: Nope! I've never had that problem, not here in the US, either. At least not yet. I guess it's kind of soon to say that since I haven't been here 6 months yet. XD

I always manage to get US coins mixed into my change whenever I go shopping haha. My dad is a big coin collector and he has binders full of coins from all around the world. |

@Kezune - I dislike carrying a bunch of ones around, so if I owe something like six dollars I give the cashier a ten or a twenty and a one. About half the time the cashier just stares at me with a confused look on their face trying to figure our why I just gave them so much money. :/

My husband's dealt with Mexican Pesos, Korean Wan and Thai Bhat. He's the military man, after all.

@Rascii, I honestly don't blame the Sweedish for not wanting to use the Euro, it's a sinking ship.
Uh, I've used pounds and dollars, that's about the extent of my money adventures.

I've only ever used British Pounds. If I decided to go on the Amsterdam trio with college last month, I'd probably have used Euros for the first time.
Oh, and welcome back Jacob. |

Penny is 1 cent.
Nickel is 5 cents.
Dime is 10 cents.
Quarter is 25 cents.
There are 100 cents to a dollar. :3
More complicated than yen, that's for sure.

^Half-dollar/ silver dollar is $0.50, but I have never seen one used in a transaction.
Dollar coins exist, but they're pretty rare. I usually get them out of the coin returns on vending machines. |

I miss the old Deutsche Mark (the german pre-euro currency).
That was pretty funny. 5 DM existed as coin and as note.

I don't think dollar coins are really all that rare. Or maybe I just get lucky. I've seen more of them than half dollars. But yes, I don't know much on any other currency, but it sure does seem American coin currency is complicated and drawn out.

I still have some copper one cent and two cent pieces hoarded (they went out of our system over 20 years ago...) - our government boiled down several to make the bronze medals for the 2000 Olympics.

I'm from the US, and I know when I worked as a cashier at a Burger King near the Canada border loonies and toonies confused me a lot at first. I hated that we also kept our Canadian change all mixed together in one slot of the drawer. Always had to dig to find what I needed, and I was constantly out of loonies and toonies!
I've never dealt with any other currencies before though. |

Staying by the number 5: already seen the new 5 euro note? It looks rather ugly compared to the old one. More like playing money actually.
And the feeling in the hand sucks too. When you don't get told that it's worth something, you really think it'd be from some kinda monopoly clone, especially if you are used to the old 5er...
I heard in 1-2 years they also want to mess up the 10er and the 20er in the same manner >.<

The money we have here isn't papery anymore... It's sort of... Plastic-y. Not very nice feeling in your hands, doesn't like to fit in wallets either. Not as nice and crumple-y as paper.

Yeah, that's it! Such a weird, stiff plastic feeling...
Btw, when I recall right, then notes are actually not paper, more a cloth-type stuff. Just feels like paper.

Laura, don't feel bad about not getting US money, for years I got nickels and dimes mixed up in the method of counting them. I still kind of do, and I'm a US citizen, never using any other kind of currency!

Thanks Panda; that's reassuring to know! I think I still have a one dollar bill lying around somewhere, no loose change though.
And thanks for the explanation, Kezune! It sort of makes sense when you see it written down, haha. |

Due to the change I had leftover when I left vet school, I keep mistaking EC (Eastern Caribbean) dollar coins for quarters. I do miss having dollar coins available, it just seemed more convenient for things. Though the strangest thing about that currency was that the makeup of each coin was so different. The 1 and 5 cent coins were made out of aluminium, and were very light and felt like plastic. The 10 and 25 cent coins were a heavier mixture, and there were at least 6 different type of dollar coin. |
