Is it possible to make creatures approach water when homesick? Ideally they would try and go underwater to lay. I've heard they can't really recognize water but I'm wondering if there's some way of doing it. |

Have you tried changing the 'approach norn home when homesick' stimulus and instinct from approaching the norn home scent to approaching the 'bodies of water' scent?

The closest anyone's ever gotten to this is the Water Element Norns, and even then it's not "I feel homesick for water," it's "I feel homesick whenever I'm out of water."
I've done what Malkin's suggested multiple times, but it doesn't make them approach water when homesick. That requires an instinct, and as mentioned water is not considered a recognizable object.
You could try some complicated brain editing to make them approach high concentrations of water smell (CA 5) when homesick, but not being well-versed in brain editing I'm not sure if that's even possible.

Hmm, thanks Malkin and Grendel Man. I'll have to have a think about this. |

The aquanorns feel 'intensely high up' when they're homesick - that's an attempt to get them to find water, by going down.

I could incorporate that into the genome, but it doesn't really help for standalone all-water metarooms. |

Yes... plus, put an Aquanorn in a metaroom where elevators DON'T lead straight down to water, and they'll starve to death trying to "go down" even if the elevator doesn't go any further down. They'll literally just lie there next to it until they die. I usually gengineer my own Aquanorns when I want them to avoid that... it isn't something I'd recommend intentionally propagating.

Thanks for the advice, I won't do that after all. |
