Genetics Questions

I recently installed Creatures Exodus, and I've been playing a bit of C3.

I'm interested in developing my own breeds (yes, I know, a big goal, but I am taking baby steps)
What's the best place for information on this? Just around the forum/blogs that are around?

My next question is this. I installed the genetics kit and it worked fine, but then next time I loaded a genetic file I got this error:

Failed to load captions correctly.
Description: error ID 63 (Bad Record Number)

And now I can't read what is what. Anyone seen it before and know how to fix it? Any help would be great because it's really annoying...

Great to see you're interested in developing your own genetic breed! I used to shy away from Creatures genetics, thinking they were way too complicated to get into. It takes a bit of practice and a lot of experimenting, but genetic tinkering is a whole lot of fun!

The Creatures Developer Resource was a great resource for genetics information, but it's been down for the last month with no archives. I recommend checking out geNorNics for some great genetic information: It's mainly geared towards C1, but there are a lot of principles that can be applied to C3/DS!

I've started putting together a few Genetics Tutorials, although they're admittedly very basic with only a few advanced concepts thus far. A few of my Case Studies also feature genetic analyses, which might be helpful to you!

Asking questions around the boards usually gets a lot of answers, though!

In terms of the error, have you already installed the Creatures Remastered Patch? This might be part of the issue, but perhaps others will have other ideas!

What genetics file is it? From memory, error 63 means it doesn't have a proper caption (.gno) file.

Thanks for those links.

I had been reading your site and found them quite helpful, so thank you!

I started off with the patch before playing around with the kit. I also uninstalled exodus and reinstalled but it didn't seem to fix it. Hopefully someone can help!
Until then I've got some reading to do :)

The genetics files are all the ones that came installed, with the gno files there. Could it be it's looking in the wrong place for them?

You might have a split installation, which is common for the GOG.com version of Creatures Exodus. You should have some files in Program Files and others under My Documents. Try loading the genome from the other source to see if that will help.

There doesn't seem to be anything in My Documents this time (there was before) this is very strange

You might also like to have a look at the links and tutorials listed in the C3/DS Breed Making resource file - hope they help!

Dear Mr Lapzod.

When you press buttons and things break, you should probably put the setting back to the original.

:embarrassed face:

turns out it was my own fault...oops. It works now.

Thanks everyone for the links and the help!

Normally, I would make a new thread for this, but since this one is already open . . .

For some reason or another, I'm getting errors whenever I try to export a creature from the genetics kit! Specifically, I'm getting this one:

Gene file not found or attempted to load into invalid slot ... o 10
accg 4
perm 60
{@}gene load targ 1 "dave"
setv o ...

Moving the gen file from the Programs directory to My Documents made no difference, and neither did using a docked world versus an undocked world . . . and I have no idea who this "Dave" is!

EDIT: I found Dave!

No idea what the padlock icon actually means, other than that the file seems to disappear whenever I try to find it outside of whatever program I'm using.

It's probably a temporary file. File is buffered in genetics folder to make sure the game finds it, genome is used to create egg, genome is deleted.

If you really wanna look at it anyways, you can try to copy the file to some other place.
