Any bird lovers here? List your favourite bird species below!
I've recently been watching BBC's Penguins - Spy in the Huddle and have found it gives a fascinating look into the lives of three different penguin species. I already liked penguins before watching it, but the amount of intelligence and social behaviour they show is remarkable!
I'm also quite partial to Corvids such as Ravens and Crows. Not only are they intelligent, I also love the beautiful black colouration of their plumage. I am also a fan of tropical birds, such as parrots. So cute. |

We used to live in the middle of the territory of a pair of tawny owls - could follow their progress by the hooting moving round the house. At the same place we used to get pheasants wandering in and out of the garden, the males are exotic as any tropical bird!
The whole (appallingly-named) turdidae family have wonderful songs - robins, thrushes, blackbirds, nightingales. And robins and blackbirds are so fearless. |

*crashes in* BIRDS YES!
...I mean of course..I have some favorite birds. I love many but I also love corvids, a lot of the parrot family, a few birds of prey like the Steller's Sea Eagle, the tern family, and Cedar Waxwings.

I like little birds like chickadees and budgies, and especially these little birds that I hear sometimes in my yard. I'm not sure what they are, since they stay well enough out of sight, but they make a sort of "pheobe" call.

Ohh, Lilynorn, chances are those birds are actually Phoebes! They got their names from their calls.

I love parrots. I have a sun conure and two tiels. I wish I could have a whole flock of birds! Someday I would like to have an Indian Ringneck again. They are very intelligent and fun to be around.
my sun conure, Mr Grumpus, loves my cats but doesnt like the other birds. He also loves to snuggle!

Birds are my favorite animals. In fact, I'm more fond of them then cats and dogs. I used to have six parakeets (budgies). Parakeets, owls, cockatiels, crows/ravens, songbirds, chickens the list goes on... I love them all

One should only have one favorite? Well sheesh, I don't know where to start. I think it's fair to say I LOVE most Phasians. But, I also love vultures (I'm weird) among others. Phasians hit me hard though, as the diversity in Pheasants apart from everyone's knowledge of the common ringneck, golden, or amherst is incredible. But above that, we've bred chickens into being quite the diverse group as well. I don't think there's any other animal we've pushed the boundaries of "natural selection" on and changed more than chickens.

Did someone say birds? I love birds of all shapes and sizes, whether they're owls, ostriches, penguins or ducks. They're all amazing.
I think my favourites are the ones I see every day though - robins, magpies, crows, woodpeckers, bluetits and longtailed tits, wagtails and, of course, my four chickens. Actually, chickens have become one of my favourite species as a whole. Here's why:
- There are breeds of chicken that are beautiful and breeds of chicken that are cute. Even the most practical breeds of chickens look pretty!
- There are fluffy chickens, chickens with feather legs and feet, chickens with beards and chickens with bedheads.
- There are giant chickens the size of toddlers and there are tiny chickens the size of pigeons.
- Different breeds of chickens can lay white, peach, brown, dark brown, blue or olive green eggs.
- Chickens don't need much space to be happy and they eat just about everything, making a small flock great pets.
- Each chicken has their own personality and the way they interact with each other as part of the pecking order and as part of the flock as a whole is really interesting.
- Chickens are surprisingly intelligent and look out for one another.
- Finally, chicks are the cutest thing.
TL;DR - Chickens are awesome. ![[nsmile] [nsmile]](/images/smilies/emot_smile.gif)
I'm watching a live stream of baby chicks that will be running for a month - it's worth checking out if you want to overdose on cute. The chicks are at oldest a day old today. Here's the link: Chickam!

Mainly owls. I'm usually more interested in primates but when it comes to birds my fave has to go to the owls. |

Ducks, penguins, kiwis. You know, awkward birds. |

Hummingbirds. Mini, sugar powered helicopters.
Mocking birds are fearless little freaks. I've watched them dive bomb cats, dogs, and hawks.
And speaking of owls, there's one that roosts in a tree outside my window. It's surprising how loud their calls are.
My favorite norn is still Belldandy. |

I love humming birds, too! We get so many of them in our yard because of all the blooming ice plant and the lemon and orange trees.
If you want to attract more birds you can always get a Suet bird feeder and fill it with scraps of yarn, cloth and pet hair. I've been putting dog hair in mine and the birds come to take some to insulate their nests. I caught two of them plucking hair out just today!

I tried that one time. The squirrels loved me. Not that I mind the squirrels, but I wanted the birds.
Not to mention how, every time I walk outside, they want to chatter at me from their nest.
My favorite norn is still Belldandy. |

I'm not a major bird lover (I'm a fish/reptile person), but there's quite a few birds I like a lot. My favorites are corvids - especially Ravens. They look cool, they're traditional harbingers of doom, and they're ridiculously intelligent as well. And they can talk like parrots, too.
I'm also fond of birds of prey - Golden Eagles are my favorites among them, though owls are very neat too.

The swallows here love the stray feathers left by our Sebastopol geese. The geese have weird curly shaped white feathers, which when shed, are all over the place and very messy looking, however during the summer the swallows love to swoop by and snatch 'em up.
We've got a lot of hummingbirds but they don't get to enjoy our lime, orange, and limequat trees. Instead they have an enormous spring plethora of wild berry species.

Oh man! I love Crows, they are super intelligent. Also I would love to have a tiny chicken!
When I was younger, my brothers friend used to work with wildlife rescue, and he brought over a baby duck to our house. So we filled the bathtub with some water and played with him in the tub. It is one of my favorite memories.
Last night I had Mr Grumpus out and he was playing with different stuff I had laying around. All were bird toys. I was filling some of them with paper so the tiels would be happy to tear some stuff apart. It really struck me how inquisitive he is. I could give him some paper and he would play with it, but then I could give him a round toy that had some moving parts and he would love holding it with his foot and playing with the moving parts with his beak. It was like giving toys to a kid; he would play with one or another for a while, then squack at me that he wanted something else, and be happy to play with the new toy for a little while. Hopefully we can start training a little, and I can teach him to do some new things!
I also realized that hes learning to talk. When he is happy he will mumble some things that sound like phrases I use, such as "I love you" and "pretty bird." Its very exciting! I cant wait to teach him some songs and new phrases.

I really love birds, I remember I was considering becoming an ornithologist in high school before I graduated. I find everything about birds super fascinating, and I love how much variety is in them. I think one of my favourite birds would have to be Ravens, their such silly animals. There is a pair of Ravens that live in my area and they enjoy playing with my dog in the morning. |

*plops back in bird thread* Who else likes pigeons? I know so many people think they're disgusting and filled with germs, but those people don't get that pigeons are about as clean as any other bird. They do get mites, but that's just like tons of other outdoor birds. Mites are common.
Pigeons are adorable and I'm that strange person who stands there talking to one on the street, pfft.
Oh and corvids are amazing, I never brought that up clear enough. They are even one of the few species besides us that have self awareness, and can recognize themselves in a mirror. And people honestly think they fall for scarecrows, haha.

Pigeons are awesome, especially ornamental types and specialty fliers like Birmingham Rollers. I just don't raise them because they're serious hawk bait. That's where I like watching others on YouTube
I don't live in the city though, so, I rarely see them except our wild Band-Tailed Pigeons in the forests. They surely do love our Cascara trees.

Ornamental types are so pretty, and yeah, hawks and falcons love them so I can see it a challenge trying to keep them safe.

In case you're interested Andre, here's some advice about cockatiels who eat their poop. Apparently it's caused by vitamin deficiency. |

Thanks, C-Rex, but she has a cuttlebone and a stone for sharpening her beak, and I feed her a mixture of various seeds. I gave her a vermin killer and they appeared in her poop, so i think that was the reason. |
