If there was some kinda announcement about the servers going down, I must've missed it. Either way, it's quite clear the original servers aren't coming back online.
I have found what could possibly be an alternative. It's called tunngle.net. It hosts game servers for free, and it MIGHT be what we're looking for. I tried to look, but their forums are kinda a mess for me to navigate.

But wait. What about those who "arrived to the party late" and haven't been able to make an DS account while the email system was still online? They are/I'm pretty hopeless. |

Maybe they host gameservers for free, but there's still a problem: do we have any server application we can actually RUN on that VM?

The DS server ran custom software--unless you can get your hands on that software (or we can reverse engineer it), this is a non-starter.
