A general topic for science news and cool or interesting factoids.

How owls swivel their heads
A study has suggested that owls can swivel their heads as far as they can because their carotid arteries aren't on the outside, like ours are, but are instead much closer to the spine, so they are more protected when the head moves.
The vertebral arteries that go through the neck bones are given a lot more space to move and have a cushioning air sac. Owls' blood vessels also have more connections which can help to divert blood flow.
What else have you discovered in science lately?

I've been interested in octopuses lately. Apparently they're super intelligent.
I first saw one in real life when I was snorkeling in Thailand. It changed colors right before my eyes and moved very mysteriously. Ever since then I've been fascinated by them.

According to the article, octopuses may be able to see with their skin and each arm has something of a mind of its own... That's really something! ![[nsurprised] [nsurprised]](/images/smilies/emot_surprised.gif)

Octopi are adorable! I don't know why but I just find them so cute.
There's a study recently here that honey bees might have their own personalities! I think that's really cool.

I only think octopi are cute when they are tiny babehs. Remember there once was an octopus called Paul that could predict who would win in a football game? |

Pruney fingers may be an adaptation to give us better grip underwater
Wrinkles in wet fingertips form a pattern of channels that divert water away from the fingertip, which has been shown to help people grip things underwater.

Superfast Spinning Black Hole Tearing Up Space at Nearly the Speed of Light
"Astronomers observed NGC 1365’s black hole using the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observatories, and were surprised to find out it’s spinning so fast that the outer edge is moving at very nearly the speed of light!"
I love love love space.

3 new planets could host life
Two of the planets -- Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f -- are described in a study released Thursday in the journal Science. They are part of a five-planet system in which the candidates for life are the farthest from the host star.
Their host star -- which corresponds to Earth's sun, but is smaller and cooler -- takes the name Kepler-62. The star's planets are designated by letters after the star's name.
A third planet that's potentially habitable, but not included in the Science study, is called Kepler-69c. A study about it and its system is published in The Astrophysical Journal.
[...]
[NASA investigator William] Borucki said the new planets are "by far" better candidates for life than any others we know about, but a handful of others also have been identified as potentially capable of hosting life.

Bullfrogs eat anything that moves.
"Over 15 classes of animals were reported from a total of 18,814 identifiable prey remains, including terrestrial and aquatic insects, spiders, crayfish, fish, frogs, salamanders, newts, snakes, lizards, turtles, birds, and small mammals."
Sounds like it's time to open up a world wide Cajun Fried Frog Legs chain.

A cybernetic roach could save your life.
"Ultimately, we think this will allow us to create a mobile web of smart sensors that uses cockroaches to collect and transmit information, such as finding survivors in a building that's been destroyed by an earthquake,"
Don't stomp that roach! It's descendants could save you life some day.
This just in: Mutant super-cockroaches from space a menace to mankind?
"According to Russian news agency Novosti, baby cockroaches conceived aboard a satellite in September have apparently grown up to be faster and tougher than their terrestrial brethren."
Change of plans, stomp the roaches before they conquer the universe!

Neural network that detects breast cancer
A teenage girl, Brittany Wenger, has created a neural network that can recognise malignant breast cancers from minimally-invasive biopsies with a 99.1% success rate - and as it sees more samples, it improves its accuracy.
It is more accurate than commercial programs that do the same thing, and Wenger hopes it will be used in hospitals. It also has the potential to be adapted to detect other kinds of cancers.

Interestingly, Lobsters might actually be immortal due to an enzyme that repairs DNA when it replicates, as aging is caused by dna getting damaged over prolonged replication, it is assumed most, if not all lobsters die from external factors. i.e disease, hunting, other lobsters.

Heard another case of someone being cured. The guy first got HIV, then he got blood-cancer.
Against the cancer he got a donor of spinal cord.
Well, a small amount of people is immune against HIV. By chance the donor was one of those immune people. The guy the stuff was donated to adapted that through the spinal cord and he got rid of both, HIV and cancer.
