For Christmas my friend got me a pet Guinea pig from his litter of baby Guinea pigs!
My friend had named him Rusty but I ended up renamed him to Skittles
He is only about 8 or 9 weeks old and his Super cute!
He has a really nice fur color, its Black with brown fur
mixed in with it and some brown patches!
I use to have a girl Guinea pig and my little brother had a boy one, but we didn't really play with them...
We just had them to breed. At first I was going to have Skittles as a breeding Piggy but in the end I decided not to.
Our old guinea Pigs where kept out side in my sisters birds cage. Skittles was kept out there for a little while. But then we found out it was going to be hot for a few days so we would have to bring him inside. I decided I wanted to keep him in side with me forever, I asked my Mum if that was ok and she sead yes! He didn't have a very big cage to start with inside, I think he stayed in that one for one night but we found a bigger cage for him to live in!
And now his in that! He is in my room in his cage sleeping in his little tent
I think he is the first proper pet Guinea pig I have kept! Im really enjoying having him in my room with me so far! He is still very Skittish when I put my hand near him though...
Oh and I will tell you what happened to my old breeding Guinea pig... Well it was a really hot day, and I went out side to feed them in I think the afternoon sometime, when I got there they where both dead... They died from getting to hot!
It can get pretty hot where I live. Its good Skittles is inside, I don't think he will ever get to hot or cold!
I hope he will start eating out of my hand soon!
Im thinking about getting another Guinea pig to keep him company...
My sister does have a boy and a girl Guinea pig for breeding and we introduced Skittles and her boy one, Spike to each other, they didn't really fight, but Spike sounded like he was chattering a bit. I think he was also trying to tell Skittles he was the boss, I hope they get along I don't want my Guinea to be lonely... Even though im home schooled and I have HEAPS of time to spend with Skittles, he will want another Guinea pig to play with, I have read allot that you shouldn't just keep one Guinea Pig, that you should get at least two, I think I do want to get a friend for Skittles, but my cage is pretty small, I have also read that male Guinea Pigs together need more space than two females together do.
Wow, this is getting to be a long post!
Im also keeping a Guinea Pig Diary for Skittles! xD
Im righting about all the interesting things that have been happening! Oh and I think he even has a little corner in the cage where he goes to poo... So im thinking of putting a litter box there!
If I cant get anther male piggy I will just play with him allot and get Spike to play with him!
So far Skittles seems to like to stay hiding in his tissue box! He doesn't come out of it very often...
I guess he is still just getting use to everything.
I will keep updating on how tame his getting!
I will also tell you when I can hand feed him!
AND I will tell you if I get a bigger cage or another Guinea pig and so on...
And if you have a pet Guinea Pig tell me about it/them!

Do you know what breed Skittles is, and is he long-haired or short-haired? I prefer the short-haired ones myself, the long-haired guinea pigs look like walking wigs!
I've never had a pet guinea pig myself, but I know a lot of people who have. Apparently they're quite noisy, lol. |

Well im not really sure what breed he is...
But he has very soft fur, its not really to short but not really to long, he just has a little bit a fur coming down his sides I think!
Skittles isn't very noisy at all! I think that's just because his still shy though. He did squeal a bit when I let him run around in the hall way today though... He did that about twice and both times didn't last very long!
It looks like he likes apples! I gave him a little bit before and I left it in the cage near his house and he got it and ate it after I left him for a little while!
I think he likes carrots to!
He is a Very skittish and shy Guinea pig!
Like I sead he doesn't make mush noise at all!

I used to have two guinea pigs named Fluffy and Coco. I couldn't pick them up because my eyes got itchy. Mom gave them away to her friend and we got a chinchilla |

@FlyingEttiNorn: I love chinchillas, they look so darn cuddly! Is it true that if you get a chinchilla's fur wet it will never dry? |

I used to have 2 male guinea pigs. Then one died due to an incompetent veterinarian.
So I had one male left. Keeping them alone is not good, so we had to buy another one. The problem is you can't put a new male to an old one, so we had to get a female one. POW, suddenly we had 6.
The babies loved their daddy. They only came to mum to drink milk.
Sadly did they love daddy a bit too much. He couldn't handle the stress, so he lost his fur and died.
Shortly before his death he has impregnated mommy-pig another time, so we still had 6 piggies.
Now mommy and one of the older kids is dead, so I have 4 left.

Wow... Well one of the good things about Guinea Pigs is that they live longer than other small pets!
But how did the Daddy Guinea lose his fur from stress?
Can that happen??
Im going to be getting another boy Guinea when I make a bigger cage! There's a heat wave here for a few days though and my dad cant weld anything in that time so we are going to make some plans for the cage!
I will tell you more about what the cage will be like after I get a bit of sleep...

Did you know that if you pick a guinea pig up by its tail, its eyes will fall out?
Just kidding! ![[nlaugh] [nlaugh]](/images/smilies/emot_laugh.gif) |

xD Do they even HAVE a tail?
Where going to make a cage after this heat wave goes away... Is still about 4 days until its gone though...
Where going to make it out of a long plank of wood with thick plastic covering it!
And then for the outside there will be metal bars all around it, its not going to have a roof, but I want to get something to put over it if I ever need a roof.
Right now im holding Skittles and his so cute!!
He tried to get out of my lap a little bit before! xD
He does like veggies but he still wont eat out of my hand when his in his cage!

to upload pics, you take them with your ipod or a phone, and if you have an usb charger plug it in to the computer, then after it is on the computer upload it to tinypic or something than use the image tag (click commands to the left of this window) |

*pops in* If you have a scanner you can scan a photo you might have taken, like a non-digital photo, the kind that get developed and you come to the store and pick them up later.
If you have a regular digital camera, it should come with a USB plug to plug into your PC/laptop, and you upload the pictures onto there.
As for tinypic, google it! It's a website that allows you to upload pictures onto it, then it'll give you several types of codes to choose from. Pick the one that says direct URL, but don't copy it just yet.
Then go to the reply box on this thread, and see where it says commands/smilies next to it? Click commands, then copy the one that says [ img=URL][/img ], though I put spaces in it to show the code on here properly, which you don't need to do.
So once you've copied the code, paste it, and then between the two codes that end in brackets, go back to the tinypic website, copy that direct URL code I told you about earlier, and paste it in between the two codes. Now you have your picture!
It should show up when you post.
I hope this helps!

Your piggy seems to be really cute. Think you can upload a pic anytime soon?
on a random unrelated note, I never saw a cinchilla IRL (In the sense that it was a reall chinchilla and not from a game or tv) until one day I saw what seemed to be one in a pet shop. They are really cute too <3 |

Okay, so I see that I wouldn't be resurrecting a thread by popping in!
Belated congrats on the new guinea pig. They're noisy but cute little boogers. And a lot of work, but that could be because we were a volunteer foster family for our local animal rescue and many of the small animals that came to us had been severely neglected by their previous owners. Unfortunately we had to stop because of moving and our current landlord doesn't allow us to do that. Thankfully they allow dogs, fish, and with a pretty big safety deposit, (Ouch is an understatement, there) my chinchilla Meeka.
I don't remember much about the sleeping habits of Guineas, but I do recall that you have to be careful with their diet because they can easily develop constipation. And provide plenty of toys for them to play with and chew on.
But I can say at least one thing mentioned earlier about chinchillas. That saying about their fur never drying out is true to an extent. Because their coat is so dense with about 50 hairs per follicle (That's what makes them sooooo soft and fluffy!) it would take an enormous amount of time for it to dry out on its own and leaves the chinchilla open to developing fungal infections before that happens. Which is why giving them a wet bath is saved for the most extreme emergencies. I've never had to give miss Meeka one of those yet and hope I never will, but a couple of times I've had to brush a lightly dampened washcloth over her fur. One of which was because one hot summer day, one of my younger brothers tried feeding her a fresh peach through the bars of her cage and sprinkled her with fruit juice in the process! I had to spend months gently teasing out the more stubborn sticky clumps from her coat. She looked like a weird hedgehog for quite awhile.
From the depths of Deep Lurkspace I emerge... And suddenly can't remember what it is I came up for. |

Just a word of warning in case you don't know, lisha, you shouldn't feed your piggie iceburg lettuce, cabbage, potato peelings, raw beans, seeds (including peanuts), rhubarb, meat, dairy products, chocolate or sugary foods. Hope this helps. |
