Unfortunately, I've always disliked the original autonamer file that came with C3/DS. I'm slightly obsessive, so certain aspects of it bother me:
1) Some letters have too few names, and others, far too many;
2) I do not need, for example, twenty Y-names that begin with Yoshi-, as this increases the chance that all my males are Yoshi-something and I can't distinguish them real fast;
3) There's not enough diversity for me -- yes, really;
4) I'd like to add names from books I love, as well as a few joke names.
I don't know how to code, so I can't completely prevent my 26th generation twins from both popping up as Zoe. However, as the catalogue file itself pretty simple to figure out, I'm going to completely remake it to fix some of the problems above. First off, none of the names will share more than 4 letters in a row at the beginning, so I can tell my Aratat from my Anitac; second, I'll be using names from a bigger pot of cultures, as well as from mythology and classic or popular books. (Don't be surprised if you see a 'Smaug' or a 'Heathcliff' or a 'Rincewind' pop up on TCR or in the downloads section eventually!)
This was, originally, going to be mostly for me and my friend. However, I'm letting you all know in case any of you are interested in the file when it's done. It should be finished in a few weeks or so as I quickly compile names and test it. End of January due-date, I'm guessing, at the very very latest. Also, everything (including joke names) will be perfectly PG, so no need to worry when leaving autonamer on with your younger siblings, cousins, or kids. I will even filter out mythological beings that have total and overt sexual connotations, so a little kid doesn't have to be shocked when he looks up the story behind, say, a succubus.

I'm certainly excited for this.
I've downloaded Amaikokonut's Protective Tub auto namer for that much-needed variety but I do miss having names that properly correspond to generations. I can't wait to see what comes of this.
Also, I hope you don't mind a suggestion, but if you get stumped for names, you can use this website, as well:
http://www.behindthename.com/
It has an index of names and their meanings and would probably be very useful for you.
Good luck with this project! I'm very excited!

Oh, Behind the Name is one of my favoritest websites!
As a writer, I'm a total name freak. And an etymology freak -- there's definitely going to be some silly obscure words thrown in, as well. How could I resist naming a norn Abbozzo (a preliminary sketch) or Jargoon (a type of zircon) or Telarian (a creature that spins a web)?
Also, I LOVE Protective Tub and its hilarity, but this is, as you said, keeping with the generational alphabet theme. I personally need to know a lowgen norn's generation immediately for the experiments I do.

I would love to see them combined. Maybe an autonamer that makes alliterating names based on generation. Like gen 1 can be abysmal apple, gen 2 can be boisterous barnacle etc. X could be a problem coming up with enough parts. |

That sounds fantastic! I would love to see something like that. Even if just the first part of the name corresponded to the generation, that would be brilliant.
Maybe you can ask Amaikokonut for guidance if you decide to take this route? Either way, I'm sure your work will turn out great.

That's definitely something interesting to think about as well, although I think Amaikokonut could probably do it herself with the files she already has. I don't believe I'd need to help with that one!
Also, yes, X would be...insane. Most of my X names are obscure words, Basque names, Chinese names, and, uh, Xavier and Xena. Not too diverse, but we just don't make enough use of that letter in the Western world. (Though we should, darn it.)

How awesome, I love seeing new autonamers. Though I'm wondering if I should make Protective Tub generation sensitive. It might be interesting in that generation 1 normal could be named Axxx Axxx, generation 2 could be Axxx Bxxx, gen 27 could be Bxxx Axxx, and so on.
Those X-names would be quite a pain though, huh.
Either way best of luck with this! I look forward to trying out a more... serious autonamer, hah.

Uhm. I couldn't think of many X names, other than Xavier and Xander (or Xandir, both pronounced Zander) and the Japanese language doesn't exactly make use of the X sound. XD
I did find this though. Maybe this could help with those Xes?

Behind the Name also has a section of X names, but it isn't very long.

Minor update: I've got the baseline names down. Look for dances, fabrics, cheeses, and premodern (swordish/spearish/etc) weapons, as well as very obscure English-language words. Not to mention all the Lord of the Rings names, Discworld names, Chronicles of Narnia names, etc...
Now it's on to mythology, which will probably be a few days -- I have to make sure all the names have PG-13ish stories behind them at the very least, and that anyone would want their norn to have that name. ("Goddess of raven poo and virginity" sounds interesting, but really, I don't need my Hardman-Bondi weirdo to have even more issues.)
After that it's general given names from all around the world. I'll give you guys a better count of exactly how many are in the file when the compilation is completely done.

Haha. That was a bit of an exaggeration, actually, but not too much -- the Aztecs, Incans and Mayans had the weirdest stories in the world.
"The Moon and Sun were at one time equally bright. It not being appropriate for gods to be equals, one of them threw a rabbit in the face of the other, and the one struck darkened to become today's moon..."
Sounds rather Nornish:
"Me too bright."
"Maybe throw rabbit, Metztli."

Big update: looks like I'm gonna have to put this on hold, guys. This is actually a bigger project than I originally imagined, and just one letter is taking me forever to fill out properly.
I'll definitely get around to it eventually, however. Hope I'm not disappointing anyone.

Thanks. I just realized that finding 350 names (for the more common letters) that all look and/or sound different is quite difficult. One forgets that most Western names are simply variations on the same Biblical, Greek, Nordic, etc sources. Which is fine, but it's so hard to find a good site that provides a lot of accurate non-Western names, and I originally wanted those to be the bulk of my material. (As well as technically Western names that aren't mainstream -- those from various Native American tribes, for example. They might seem odd to some folks but I think they're weirdly perfect on norns.)
I have male As done, and female As about half-way done, and the rest are sitting at around five to fifty names.
It'll happen, just not in the timeframe I originally planned.

I'm really looking forward to this when it does come out, though. By the way, if I ever REALLY run out of ideas, sometimes I just Google Translate a bunch of words into other languages and see what I get. I've found a lot of really nice names that way.

That's actually a really good idea, ratkinz -- would make it super easy to fill out the ranks. And I never even thought about the six years of French that I took and all the silly words I learned for various cheeses, household items, and hairstyles...ha!
Well, it'll happen. Maybe not for a while, but it'll happen.
