C4 is really cute, but is ultimately not what I'm looking for in a Creatures game as it stands right now. I could end up being entirely wrong; it just seems like they sacrificed complexity for increased interactivity/mass appeal. And I heard there won't be ettins or grendels on release, strange 'choose your norn' genetics, and no third party support? That all seems very odd, but, then, this is a different company.
And, of course, my opinion is based on a bit of footage, rumors I can't seem to confirm anywhere (one forum says this, the other...), and a few screenshots.
All around, I think I'm the only person in the fandom with this view, though. Ah, well! Don't let me rain on your excitement; I'm definitely not gonna try to convince you out of liking something. That way lies folly.
The Uncensored Truth about C4, from August last year, states that grendels and ettins won't be available on release but they will be later (October this year), and that the company, while not having the game open to third-party stuff from the start, was looking at a TF2 system for implementing third-party stuff in the future.
I hope this helps you in confirming those rumours.
Back to the video, though - I like the click-system for encouraging norns to interact in a certain way, it reminds me of Monkey Island 3. I hope it's not accomplished by mind control, though - those norns seemed too obedient!!!
Re mind control, I am a little worried about the behavior being hard-coded. This could be true even if they kept the original brain genetics - heck, quite a bit of the behavior in C3/DS was hard-coded.
I think it's pretty interesting so far! It definitely is different in appearance, but you can still feel it's Creatures, as they kept the original voices and some of the other stuff. I'll continue to remain optimistic.
Small bird who lives here sometimes, and wanders other times.
For a demo designed to get you in and positively interacting with the creatures, it's looking pretty good. Even the hardcoded C3/DS Norns still did what they wanted sometimes. I'm eager to get in and see this all for myself. We already know that most of the genetic complexity it there. We don't know how appearance/colour is being handled, but everything else genetically should be there. If the behaviour isn't too hardcoded then I think we have decent sequel to C3/DS.
Fantastic looking demo. So excited!! I agree that this is going to be a pretty decent sequel. Coming from a place where I thought a C4 would never exist and the series was dead, I'd be happy with just about anything right now. Having said that, the game looks like it will exceed a lot of expectations even with the "mass appeal" design.
I wont knock it till I get to try it but it looks a little too much like the sims to me. Hopefully this is used more for the mobile version of the game and it is more complex for the PC version.
Looks great so far, but did anyone notice the glitch at about 4:09 where Nornette went flying offscreen for a while and then reappeared? It made me laugh so much!
It looks more like Creatures Playground to me than a core Creatures game, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. I like the ambient music they're using.
I hope there's a way to turn those pop-ups off, because I can see those getting very annoying very fast.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

I really hope the norns still have enough free will to disobey. I don't mind a bit of interactivity, but it would make it too easy if we were able to control our norns, they also don't show any learning process.
Well, "learning process" is kind of hard to convey. From what I remember, aside from teaching them to speak (and from what we've seen it looks like this game won't have typical speech bubbles, so that's probably not applicable) the preview/intro videos for the other games didn't do a whole lot to showcase the learning process, either.
I'm glad that the reward/punish mechanism doesn't look like it'll be easy to confuse - who hasn't smacked a norn they meant to tickle at one point or another?
Technically, in the old games, you still had to teach them how to eat through speech and rewards, which seemed a bit more difficult and long than what is proposed here. I hope, though, that since this is just a demo, the norns will still give us a hard time by basically ignoring us and being unable to survive.
Yeah, C3/DS Norns are pretty self-sufficient. They don't need to be taught how to eat, and will happily sit around eating and kisspopping like little virtual bunnies. You might say CLabs overshot the mark on making them easier to look after.
They do tend to forget how to eat or when to eat even in my C3/DS game, they seem to be obsessed with the lifts but I may just have a bunch of retarded norns, they also don't seem to mate much which is unusual.
Looking at the videos, it seems the only way creatures online could outmatch the original is if the creatures somehow developed sentience and started disobeying all your commands as well as mating on their own. And you can't alter the genetics at all.
But then that's probably a fantasy too awesome to come true.
I'll try to keep an open mind... I'm just scared we will be telling them what to do. Not them thinking for themselves... Otherwise it looks pretty nice. I'm excited to try this especially splicing!!!! ='D
