L'Aquila quake: scientists guilty by CSI | |

Six scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.
The earthquake killed 308 people, injured 1,500 more, and left 65,000 homeless.
If you read the summary of the case, it seems to me to be an example of the CSI effect - that there was an enormous tragedy, but that the magnitude of the quake was not predictable, and that people expect science to be infallible. The best that can be done is that if it's been a while since the last seismic activity, then it's probably going to be bigger.
This is why science literacy is important!

Ridiculous. Even if they did "understate the risk" they've basically been put in jail for giving bad advice. |

@ylukyun: My thoughts exactly. No one can predict mother nature, and throwing them in jail for it is just plain ludicrous. I know lots of people died, but putting the blame on scientists is completely out of order. ![[nangry] [nangry]](/images/smilies/emot_angry.gif) |
