Samuel Languy, one of the developers for C4, has posted on Facebook a scan of an article on C4 in Joystick, a French-language video gaming magazine that was established in 1988. The 'download' option on Facebook gives you a fairly readable copy of the full article.

The article is written by a fan of Creatures who was apprehensive when they heard the announcement of C4. While talking to FC, the writer felt that they truly loved Creatures, and are determined to conquer a new market while not deceiving fans. The writer is happy that this is "Creatures 4", and not a stupid reboot.
The writer feels that Master Shee isn't a bad idea, but that his prescence harms the melancholic ambience of the first installment, where the norns wander alone as the last inhabitants of an abandoned world.
The writer feels that it is truly a free to play game - as in, the first golden egg is free (which Master Shee will encourage us to use), but more golden eggs must be bought - but that happily, the heart of the game has not budged. The writer emphasises that all of the old artificial life, chemistry, brains and DNA technology is there, but updated for a 3D environment.
"The player has the mission to resuscitate dozens of Nornish archetypes from the four basic races" - I assume this is the 'norn collections' we've been hearing dribs and drabs about.
The writer says we will have access to a 'slicing machine' which we can buy genes from with 'genetic money' (which the article says can be got from flowers and critters). Not sure if this is an inaccuracy, it doesn't gel with what's on the official site.
The writer also says that norns can specialise in certain tasks, and implies that we will still be able to torture our norns.
The writer finds the new, simplified interface much better, finding the older interface 'frankly catastrophic', and saying that you don't need to have graduated high school to understand something in the science kit. He wonders if this simplification will detract from the richness of the game... but is still looking forward to the release at the end of 2012.
Keep in mind - I haven't really touched French in about 8 years or so, so this may not be entirely accurate.

Thanks for the translation, Malkin! It's great to see more people excited about and interested in the game.

Unlike the new Simcity (Though I'm relieved that they're only dropping subways, which, being a highly abusable underground network, is understandable; highways are confirmed but there's problems with the ramps)

Thanks for the translation summary, Malkin! It's interesting that some of the information released is different to information released online. I wonder if the interview was taken a while ago and has only recently been published?

It's more likely that the interviewer got confused between the coins that we'll earn from animals, plants, and the coin machines, and the 'genetic money', or that I misunderstood.
Now for the sidebar - a lot of this has already been said in English, either on the FC blog or the official C4 site, so the gloss will be shorter:
Why did you decide to revive Creatures? (Fans of the series, we contacted GW and they said yes)
Where are the original developers? (Not involved, but they're keeping on with their research)
Was it always going to be free to play? (Yes, from the first concepts)
Isn't this model risky as you are obliged to make concessions?
We want C4 to be part of the new wave of "hardcore" free to play games. Obviously, we've made certain choices to modernise the game, but without compromising on quality or depth! For us, to make a F2P should be especially good. It should make you want to spend time, and perhaps, money. The era of horrible Facebookian titles is over.
You've also rethought the way the data is presented to the player....
The complexity of each norn is unequalled in the world of video gaming: each is composed of several organs, dozens of chemical reactions, a neural network system, an immune system, and so on! It's not easy to show the player what is going on "under the hood". We want to give the player control over the chemistry of the norn, via the scientific kit, and the possibility of manipulating "specific" genes, those which have a very real impact, like breathing underwater. But it will not show everything, you'll still need to be a (keen) observer!
As a fan, you must have learned cool stuff when you were digging into the code of the previous episodes!
For example, in C3, to encourage norns to change floors, the norn received fun when they pushed the buttons of the lifts. Which explains why they spent their lives doing this! We also found references to a system that allowed norns to recognise members of their family. It seemed interesting, but it has not been exploited. (yet?)
In 13 years, nobody has taken up the torch of Creatures 3. Does this kind of gameplay scare developers?
In Creatures, we have a microcosm that the player can influence, but unpredictability is at its foundation. Unlike the Sims, there is not a "master character" whose reactions can be anticipated. And in this era of 'everything and everything right now', this can actually seem risky.
